  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Will this card work in significantly accelerating future 5k,6k resolutions?

My guess is that they refer specifically to 4K since that's the target that they can hit 'realtime' with and that doesn't mean it's incompatible with other resolutions (since, even discounting the new cameras, resolutions other than 4K are already available).

Like maybe it can accelerate decode/debayer with higher-than-4K footage, just not quite to realtime.

But in my opinion a better question than "how much slower than realtime is 5K/6K" would be "how much faster than realtime is 2K or 3K."

Transcoding involves many pieces outside of REDrocket (transcoding app, codec running on the cpu, cpu speed, bandwidth to cpu, bandwidth to disk, etc) however REDrocket will run faster than realtime if the rest of the system is keeping up.

Hi Deanan, how exactly will this card play with the Kona 3 and FCP?

I wouldn't expect realtime 5k or 6k. I just want to know if it has future compatibility with new resolutions and Redcode settings. Will those debayers also be significantly accelerated? In other words can I feel comfortable that this thing would kick some ass with Epic footage in the future should I buy it now?

What are the card's lane requirements? I'm not sure if I missed this.

Will it be able to replace a system's graphics card? Mac Pros are sorely lacking in the card department... and all of mine are already filled. I'd love to be able to lose the graphics card and just put the RR in. Doable, or is that outside of what is possible?

Similar question I guess to the kona3 setup, but will it send out 1080p to a HDTV, or does it only scale to 2k, eitherway, I'm in, just wondering.

Any idea if there will be new software to go along with this card? A player app or update to some of the other RED software out there?

also, i remember another thread here where someone provided links for a piece of hardware that would take one PCIe slot and output it into mulitple PCIe slots, thereby adding PCIe slots to the four that exist on a Mac Pro. not sure who makes this, or how they would function but it might be a way to use more than the four slots available in a mac pro.....

You still need a graphics card.

Rendering DPX's

Rendering DPX's

Deanan,
Will the rocket render files internally, If I have fast enough raid can I render DPX's in real-time say in 2k?? Or is it just or external playback?

thx

Deanen,

Are you intentionally skipping my question about acceleration of future resolutions(5k,6k) and redcode100 etc? ;)

Thanks for the great news Jim. RED Rocket sounds like an incredibly exciting addition to the RED product line.

Deanan,

Can you give me an idea, even if it's just an educated guesstimate of render ratios on let's say a 2.66 Nehalem based 8 core Mac Pro, going from 4K to Avid's DNx115 codec?

Will RR obviate the need for render farming?

Thanks much,
Larry Jordan
