  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

I know how hard they all work and we are very grateful! As it turns out even though its Monday morning down here and still Sunday night over there I have already got a response from one of the amazing staff answering my question!

You remember what it was like when you get a new toy you on xmas day and your Aunty forgot to buy the batteries to go with it..... thats all
patience my young apprentice. I think its obvious they are working until their eyes bleed... meantime RED Rocket™ driver install software is on their site

We'll take care of you tonight (sunday night).
As Jim says, email Brent (and cc me also) and we'll get you going.

Looks like they had a RED Rocket™ party at Reducation. I heard that they had it up and running and even projected footage? Better tug on those mooks to get the straight scoop.

True Story, Ted was a little worried since Deanan had just barely compiled the code just seconds before, but it worked like a charm. Can't wait to see what comes after Deanan gets a little bit of sleep :)

Hello,

I didn't have the nerve to read all the 80+ pages of thread but if anyone can answer this or point me in the right direction:

1) With the Rocket speeding up the transcoding part are fast RAID drives still needed or useful ?

2) is the rocket working with the current version of Redcine or will I need the new Redcine-X or Rocketcine to take advantage of its features ?

3) Does it speed up NLE which work natively with R3D files , like Premiere ?

*Rocket cine x is the new red alert ? :aureola:

Thanks

1. as far as i know, the faster the drive, the better....still.

2. no. you need the new 'X' software.

3. not yet. after the SDK comes out, one could assume it will after those programs write it in.

* yes. the new red alert and red rushes smushed together into one......

My guesses at the answers are:

1. You will still need a fast RAID to affect overall acceleration of the read and write process of the files. RED ROCKET accelrates the decoding of the R3D file, not the pulling it from disk.

2. It comes with an alpha vesion of REDCINE X. I doubt it will work with existing REDCINE.

3. In theory ir can - depends on when vendors who need to use the SDK get the SDK can see how it fits into the overall pipeline. In editing, there is more than just decoding a stream - there's a lot of how the streams need to go back and forth through the CPU/GPU for VFX processing and the like.

* My guess is that REDCINE X is a combined RED ALERT and REDrushes... but I am only guessing here.

Mike. The R3D files are only 36MB/s but the files you're writing back to the RAID may be much larger. I would suggest, with the Red Rocket speeding up the process so much, the impact of slow drives will be even greater as the storage could well become a bottleneck.

From my own personal experience, writing to a fast RAID or SSD gets you faster than realtime DPX renders. Writing to a FW drive gets you about 4:1... still significantly faster than 14:1 (or whatever it was I was getting before RED Rocket). Real benchmark testing results will be out shortly.

When we were debayering 4k 16x9 RC36 material from a firewire drive at REDucation we were getting realtime to postage size files (for the doubters, remember the debayer size is the hard part, not the size of the file you're writing to).

When we did 2k debayering of 4k material we ran into an I/O bottleneck at about 70+fps.

If you're writing to DPX, you're really going to need fast storage easily more than 900 MB/sec for 4k, ProRes quatro won't require nearly as fast of storage to write to.

Just got ours from FedEx. Can't wait for a copy of RocketCine x :)
Sucks to be in europe. Still a couple of hours away from 9 am california time.

Received my Rocket this morning and have just installed it.

RED Rocket is awesome. Full screen playback on my 30" DELL LCD looks wonderful, nice and sharp, full quality debayer. ROCKETCINE-X and REDCINE-X applications are going to rock once they're ready to go. ROCKETCINE-X has most of the RED Alert features already enabled and I like the more integrated approach where we can load up multiple clips.

Other observations and comments... My system was silent until I installed the RED Rocket. I love the new interface on ROCKETCINE-X. And while I love it overall and I know you guys are proud of it, the large white "ROCKETCINE-X" at the top of the screen is a little distracting. Does it have to be so large? Or can it be made a more subdued shade of grey? But please don't go changing that instead of working on all the other goodies. ...Sorry, I'm just in a nit-picky mood this morning. :)

New build of ROCKETcine-X will be sent to the next batch of customers that have received the cards today :)

Brent will email the details.

has anyone slotted a redrocket into a macpro? how do they fit is there plenty of room?

i have mine in mac pros. i wish the both mac pro 16X lanes were double wide. i have an ATI 4870 card which is huge and takes up two lanes.

the rocket only takes one lane and fits fine. when the breakout box comes, my worries will be gone as i won't need the hd sdi panel, which currently needs it's own blank slot.

in another mac pro, i have a kona 3, a 4-port esata card, and a graphics card. i couldn't fit the ATI 4870 in there with the kona and the other card.

need more.....PCI lanes. damn mac pros......

thanks chris that was my worry, i wonder if there is a way to mount the sdi panel outside the box.?

What goodies will we eventually find under the RED Rocket™ Setup button in ROCKETCINE-X?
