  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Rocket update...

Excellent. I've decided that I need to do most of my color grading at night or in a dark room anyways because the lights in this office are horrible so a good projector would be worth it... just don't explain to accounting how changing the lights and wall color would be cheaper than a good projector and screen. :p

-Josh
iv done the calculation and its about 18% more expensive in fact .

All the pieces are starting to fall into place : ) i cant wait to hear what the initial user verdict is. I'm getting those Red butterfly's again.Give the boys a pat on the back from an avid listener (no pun intended)

on a side note :why does the forms sub-headings change colour when i use proxy

Love is in the air ...

That's exactly what I'm thinking. ProRes captures realtime with no acceleration.

It's the Debayer that takes all the time. Remove that process and you're a long way in front.

Well, if you're encoding to a codec that you can capture to from an incoming stream (like tape), then: debayer+decode=RT + encode=RT. So, RT+RT should =RT(right?). Or is there something missing in my math?

Wow, thats really exciting. Would love to use one of these in the future. I assume it could be used with a projector (4k or otherwise) to color grading... not just monitors?

-Josh
you could slap two of these projectors together and have your ultimate imax color grad experience . Get the hell out my kitchen format :)
dont worry about the bitrate , worry about your heartrate

Alignment, edge blending, color calibration, difference in color spectrum\brightness as the lamp ages, etc... make multi-projector setups anything but a "slap together" setup for a critical viewing environment.

And to keep this on topic: Congrats to the boys at Red for your first card ships!

Deenan,

Does the *current* release of the SDK support the Red Rocket? My understanding was that a new version would be needed in order to support it... Perhaps I misunderstood.

If it the current version does not support it, when can we expect an update?

From what I understood, a new RR supported version of the SDK and RED Cine would be release when these shipped.

So...3, 2, 1...

The first rule of the RED SDK is that we don't talk about the RED SDK... But since it has been confirmed by Jarred only a few posts back, there will need to be an updated SDK released to support the RED Rocket.

Your a wise man Jeff, a very wise man :)

guess playback and viewing in full quality will be RT. Transcoding still depends on the cpu, hence can take a long time.

this will be an advantage for fcp and mainly premiere, aivd MC cant read r3d files natively asfaik...correct me if im wrong

thats why this card will be so important for Avid MC users.

P.S. any idea on delivery time ? If business should rise like it looks for this very moment, I might do a spontaneous order. If however not, I would be sorry to cancel something. Is this available in large-enough-quantities, especially since this is not a mass-production oem ?

We are ramping up solid production.

Jim

It would be great for that rule to end. Look at what Apple did with the iPhone SDK, it was 'secret' for just a little bit, but then development got much better when they lifted the NDA, because then developers can talk and work together and have community.

EDIT: I do recall that you've bound it in secrecy to hand-hold the developers who have it now. So i'm just hoping the SDK matures quickly and can be publicly discussed! It'd sure help innovation

Sorry If I missed it, but how does one order the Red Rocket? I didn't see it listed on RED.COM in the store and haven't seen any posts clarifying.
I am a red one owner... does it go by camera serial number?
thanks : )

My interest in the status of the SDK vs RedRocket, is that it seems somewhat backwards in the release order. Red Rocket's are shipping, and I can order one today, but none of my software will utilize it? I would have hoped it would have been the other way around, with the SDK being updated first, so that our favorite apps could be ready to support the Rocket once it started shipping.

Oh well, I guess the fact that I don't have $5k to drop on a rocket right now kind of negates the point...

Kyle, RED's software will work very soon, so this will be the immediate upside to getting a RR now.

We'll all be anxiously awaiting other software to incorporate the realtime features, but just the speed increase on transcodes is worth it for us to get this.

Cart before the Horse Kyle.. you need the cards tested and complete before you can lock down the SDK ( obviously )

We have Red Alert to run the RED Rocket™ now. SDK is days, not weeks away. Even if we released the SDK today we have no control over the 3rd parties schedules and the priority they have to implement.

That's what beta groups are for... (but you guys know this). And being that RA only runs on OS X still, limits a lot of us. It's not a Cart/Horse issue, but one of prudent planning to maximize the potential of the product release. Simply a limited beta of say 10-15 rockets loaned out to a select handful of SDK users (covering all platforms), with a beta of the new SDK, followed by a release of the new SDK to all users, a week before the release of the Rocket, would have given 3rd parties a chance to meet the Rocket on the market, as well as for RED to get some valuable feedback for compatibility with the card on various platforms.

Its your product, you can with it as you like, I just thought it curious...

Dude, relax ;)

Kyle, can I come join you in your perfect dream world :) ??

heh heh heh. Seriously though, sorry to disappoint you. Sure the software is MAC only right now.. but you know what, that is a good chunk of our customers. We don't hold artificially hold back stuff to make everyone happy, because we learned along time ago, thats an impossible feat no matter what we do.
