  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Rocket host system

I'm waiting to see how the software shapes up and whether my Rocket will find it's ultimate home in a Mac Pro or a PC workstation or if I'll install one in each.

But For ultimate host system, I would go with a water-cooled dual Nehalem system, OC'd to around 4GHz, 16+ GB RAM, SSD for system/OS and then RAID-5 or RAID-6 for additional storage. Once again, assuming money is no object, I would think nVidia GTX 295 x 2 for video would be nice. But in reality, I'd go for the top of the line Quadro as it would give me better support for my 3D apps.

I'm actually looking at building a new Windows box right now and my current top pick for motherboards looks to be the same ASUS model that Mark from Offhollywood showed in his RED Rocket techno-porn shots. I think Paul Leeming also has built his "Monolith" system with the same motherboard. I keep thinking I'm going to pull the trigger and order all the parts, but I really don't need the new system right now. I've got two Mac Pro systems, one of them is only about a month old since my older '08 one was replaced under warranty... And I've got a couple quad-core Windows systems and one 8-core development server and render box...

Anyway, I'm rambling on...

gigabyte are making some pretty sound MBs i guess it a matter of waiting in the techno game also i checked out these very nice SSD whilst on my visit to smpte aust this year which by the way i was overwhelmed with impact red has made on the common market is too much to keep up with i cant imagine how its going to be come epic scarlet . id say hold off if you can save your money for 2010 if you can.

2010!!! I will be time to upgrade in 2010.
In this business you cant wait till next year, you have to learn how to pay for it now and replace it next year.

I am going for the way overpriced Apple Mac Pro

Dual 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon system.
32 GB Ram
ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB
Intel X25-M 160GB SSD Drive
dual 4GB Fiber Card
RED Rocket™ w/ SDI i/o filler

Do you really need the 32GB of RAM? Really?

Meh... No SLI support, only 6 RAM slots, can only run up to 6GB when the RAM clock is set to 1.3GHz.
xfire only due to size restraints i havent heard great things about xfire come to think of it, however their ex58 extreme dose 3waysli

I'm looking to hackintosh. Paul, have you tried this with your "monolith" Motherboard? I've heard that some boards are better then others in this regard.

The watercooled beast I am planning. Higher CPU clock with silent operation you've seen or I'll buy everyone posting here a beer.

OS agnostic? Hopefully. Does anyone know of X58 MoBos that work?

We will be slipping this into our new Intel Rave just fine :)
Dual Quad core out of Supermicro April 1st. Announcement will be official later this summer as we start announcing all of the Rave 4.0 features.

*The guy on the right beating the horse is scary.....

I forgot to add this thing holds an insane amount of RAM if wanted, we ship standard 6Gb (which is plenty for what we do currently)

Cheers,
Ramona

It seems the P6T does the x86 dance without many missteps, and there is also the Gigabyte board that apparently does it even better. I have barely read about it so don't base your decisions on this. But I'll probably have to try it out.

4.0Ghz is a given. Muahahaha... MUAHAHAHAHAH...

heres what im thinking Gigabyte wise
i7(ht), 6 x SATA 3Gb/s connectors(ssd/raidconfig),2 x PCI Express x16 slots(nvidia),1 x PCI Express x8 slot(RR)

The issue I see with it is that I have only found a few reviews where people hit 3.8Ghz with the Gigabyte and it doesn't have an eSATA. Otherwise I am sold. The P6T might be the way to go after all.
All of them will accommodate SLI + RED Rocket. But I'm thinking about using one of the x16's for a RAID card instead, and just be happy with one GTX 285.

Why taint a perfectly good system with OSX??!!

But if you do want to go that way, try this board:

Gigabyte EX58-UD5

HTH
