  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ROCKET CARD DYING AFTER UPGRADE

N_Villers, you sent it a card in for repair, and Red would not ship it back to you unless you paid $3000?

What I meant was that I was offered a "discount" toward buying a new card for $3000 (cost??) which was at least better than the normal price and for this I am grateful. However, I do not understand why my bad card could not be returned for me to attempt to be repaired independently which is an admittedly unlikely scenario but something I would of liked to try anyway. Anyway, the card had payed for itself many times over and this is my first less than stellar experience with Red and their support. Still a bummer.

It was a V2 red card.
It stopped working during a firmware update.
Tried dip-switch per Red's instructions.
Confirmed by Red UK to be not repairable.
Paid $3000 for replacement card.

plain and simple, there's a huge demand for a better

A. repair/replacement policy, maybe if RED can just explain why a card can be retrofitted and repaired for let's say, a few hundred dollars to a thousand dollars, over replacing it for 3 grand, that might enlighten a lot of disgruntled people.

B. Some kind of Red Armor policy for it, if it applies for the cameras, it really should apply for the card. Let's face it, it's pretty integral to a fast workflow for any reduser, and people's business's depend on it just as much as their cameras. it's not like a simple accessory breaking that can easily be worked around, not having a rocket for a show that depends on it can blow the whole deal.

and lastly, I'm sure a lot of people can agree with this sentiment. the card is freakin expensive. 3 grand to replace the card is a huge blow, even if you do very well for yourself, it sucks, and the wallet is gonna shed a serious tear over it. Not asking for hand outs or taking away RED's business, just asking for a better business model and policy on this particular product.

Not true. The incident report and repair tickets on the Rocket is an extremely low percentage of the total number of Rockets out in the wild.

does it make it right to those unlucky (me) that have to pay a lot more more money to replace a card ...???
again it's a shame the policy behind the RR...

you should certify your product to be "'''indestructible"""" or at lest don't make money out of your faulty product

every day i can potentially lose 3K if that card stop working ...

You're saying you made a $5000 investment and you can't be bothered to read 30 posts on a forum to save yourself from spending another $3000? The post with the solution is still there. If people would read through the thread rather than the repeated 'me toos' the solution might be easier to find.

Maybe RED should consider implementing 'sticky posts' within threads similar to how they have 'sticky threads'. That way the question and answer can both be prominently displayed on the first page and we don't have to sift through pages and pages of rants.

No, what he means, is someone at Red keeps deleting posts in this thread they do not like, like mine. They already deleted my two previous posts and I know, if I post about the same subject again, it will get deleted AGAIN. And I don't even know why they keep doing that.

Okay that's annoying considering you're one of the people on here most likely to have insight/solutions/workarounds while the problem is being sorted out by RED engineers.

No. That is not what I am saying at all. I did't even pay $5000 for a rocket, I paid $3000 with the MX upgrade. and I paid $3000 to have it "repaired" when it failed after upgrading the firmware. Great deal! Restoring the default firmware did not resolve the problem, it continued to have "SV_ERROR_DRIVER_MEMORYINIT, On card memory init failed." errors.

What I am saying is : It is impossible to follow the thread when posts are censored and deleted.
This isnt China.

Someone at Red? That seems like an accusation based on an assumption. Esp when the names in moderator yellow certainly appear to not be employees of Red. And I hope one of those moderators does close this thread because it certainly has let any valuable information path be derailed. As equally frustrating to some of you as it is to me, I am sure.

Pardon me, I guess, I should had said "someone associated with Red"? It's REDuser after all, run by Red, so saying "someone at Red" is not that far out. And what does yellow color has to do with anything? If you guys looking for an excuse to ban someone, go ahead. This misplaced indignation is getting tiresome...

I for one hope this thread stays open. The RED Team has stated they are listening and with constructive feedback, hopefully we all can resolve any issues that may or may not be effecting the RR Firmware.

i for one am not digging this at all... there is an obvious issue here and seems like the kids are being ignored by the parents...wierd goings on!!! there is something not being said, discussed, admitted...its stinks!!!

Before this thread gets closed can we from now on post with the intent of working toward
a decent solution to this problem.

RED has a history of strongly supporting it's users yet there does seem to be a real issue going on with the RED ROCKET cards.

Admittedly I'm very hesitant to perform any upgrade because I simply need the card and it will REALLY hurt to have to produce
the mentioned repair cost.

I ask that there be a more structured dialog particularly between RED tech support and RED ROCKET owners who have experienced this problem so a fix can
be found.

The cards obviously are workhorses but they may not be perfect.
If there is indeed some sort of issue hardware or software let's deal with it with the intent of getting it solved.
The card is way too important to the workflow for the anger confusion to reign.

Structured communication helps.

So why not offer a service contract/extended warranty? $3000 repair cost with 90 day warranty is not reasonable.

Or open up the SDK so other hardware developers could offer a solution. R3ds do not need to be "encrypted" - in the old days I could decompress and debayer them in matlab. If you just opened them up we would have gpu decode by now.

Great cameras, but a post workflow revolving around unreliable hardware is weak.

calling the rocket unreliable is not true. i used 7 several rockets over the years. none had problems.
i thought this thread was about updating the rocket to the latest firmware and the possible problems of upgrading.
