  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED replacements

The reason panavision replaces the camera if it breaks is because you are renting it...you can't own a panavision camera...they don't sell them. So i say if you want to have your red camera replaced if it does break go rent it from a rental house, but I am sure if something goes wrong with the camera Red will fix it/replace it. FYI the reason thoes POS panavison cameras break all the time is because they are mechanical...moving parts = Bad

Yeah makes you wonder how all those films ever get shot with those POS Panavision cameras with their bad moving mechanical parts that break all the time.

I don't know if it's ever been mentioned by the RED team, but...

What sort of warranty will the RED One come with? I think that will have a lot of impact on how we view these issues.

But I think the best advice when starting a large project is to have a backup plan in place. What will you do on short notice if your RED is no longer functioning? My plan is to make friends with all the RED owners who are local to me. And hope that one of them can help me out in a time of need while I wait for FedEx to show up with replacement parts or camera. Oh, and good insurance helps too...

Oakley has always fixed my sunglasses too. ...But it's a bit different comparing $150 sunglasses to a RED One system.

I would have reserved a second camera and secondary lenses. But my budget doesn't allow for that... Besides, I have 4 REDservation holders (that I know of) within a 20 mile radius of me.

yeah it does make you wonder...but i see the panavision repair truck on our set every week and I here the 2nd ac yelling out "camera malfunction." at least once a day.

Hi Chuck,

Funny thing is I often use a 1944 Fries Mitchell, the only problems in the last 15 years have been electronic upgrades!

1. What will be the price (approx) of a mysterium sensor replacement?
(Please don't say $17,500.)

2. If a digital magazine hard drive fails can we put in a replacement ourselves?
2A. Will the drives be an off the shelf item?

3. Are the electronic innards of the camera replaceable in a modular way?
3A. Will you be marketing backup replacement boards aka Panavision?

Thanks
TJ #1150
Hi TJ, the sensor is designed to be a modular replacement (in the future, for example, Red may offer an 8K sensor upgrade to put in your RedOne body, making it identical to the RedTwo they may then shipstandalone to new customers). Given the whole modular concept of the camera (upgradeable CPU is probably another likely option as electronics increase in speed down the line) I'd imagine that the sensor will definitely be cheaper than a new camera, though of course it will be a large chunk of the price given that it's the heart of the beast!

I can't definitively answer 2. but I imagine given it's likely given that sort of tech is probably sourced from existing standard computer equipment.

Hi,

I have noticed many people blame equipment, when they make a mistake!

Hi Stephen,

Yeah damn 1944 POS Mitchell with all those mechanical parts. And then Doug Fries has the nerve to put a spinning mirror reflex system on top of it (or is that in front of it?) all. I would say it's a miracle that you got any useable footage.

Hi Chuck,

The 1944 one has a beamsplitter & bellows focusing. What was Doug Fries thinking of in 1987!

FWIW he puts the spinning mirror under and infront, so it's S35 friendly, worked well enough for James Cameron on Titanic & Dante's Peek, before he sold it to me

Hi Stephen.

Yeah damn POS pellical (or is it a prisim?) and bellows that makes it possible to do repeatable motion control tracking macro shots. What was Doug thinking! And he calls himself an engineer!

Hi Chuck,

A pelicule, and any lens mount you want except PL!

Ah yeah, Pelicule thats how I meant to spell it.... It's nice to see a camera that's older than me, (57) still spinning along. All those little cold tool steel parts inside, justs warms the heart. Anyhow enough of this kidding around, it's time to go Steelhead fishing here. The Rogue river is just down the road from me and you can all eat your hearts out! lol

as with any camera out on a production if it goes down - you have to make quick arrangements - most rental houses in LA will have a replace out to you within a hr or depending on local traffic could take longer in LA area ... most will ship next plane out if production is out of area ...

those that own their own camera what do you do if your camera goes
down on a project?
Does Panasonic/Sony send you a loaner overnight ?

i like the idea of networking of REDs in local area/national ... then if any REDs goes down and you're shooting in SF area i'd drive my RED to you that minute/day if available for tempory use ( emergency use only = try to get a permanent replacement within 48hrs weeks days ..72hrs weekends... not looking to rent out my RED)

Same here, that's why I think the Red owners in the SF Bay Area should build a Red network. This network can provide an emergency respond system in case your own red breaks down in the field.

This is why my partner bought 1 and I bought 1. Besides that, We've already joined the Red Group which formed in LA.

There will be at least two RED ONE cameras in Belgrade for
emergency responding if needed. We hope some more cameras will be bought latter. Kusturica possibly!
