Typically, some of the reasons why production companies do not own their equipment is due to the fact that companies like Panavision can provide rapid replacement turnaround in the case of camera malfunction. Often, producers have to put a surety bond - called completion insurance - that a film will be completed on time.

In the unlikely event of say a camera malfunction, or say an insurance claim for fire, theft, accidental breakage, will Red provide a special service where upon receiving confirmation of the event, provide express replacement service?

I doubt RED would exhaust energy into taking up "rental house" duties as you are hoping for. Though anything is possible.

But, I'm sure many rental companies will pop up to provide the backup-emergency RED replacement services you desire. If anything, I wouldn't be surprised if Panavision started "panavizing" some REDS since the RED appears to be superior in many areas to the Genesis.

A friend asked me "What if your camera gets broken or damaged?"

I responded:

"Tough chance. But if it does I presume the guys at RED had thought of that.
The mentality behind the whole project assures me I won't be disappointed."

If you own your own Red, and it failed on a shoot, you could always find a rental house that had one and get it. Worst case scenario, you'd have to have one shipped in. Obviously from a production stand point this is a nightmare for a production, but unless you're going to rent the camera from a rental house that has enough of them, this is the only reasonable insurance you could have. Unless of course you're going to buy another one as a backup.

It's not resonable to expect Red to provide this kind of insurance. They're the manufacture not a rental company.

As a side note, Red has mentioned if there is anything wrong with the camera, defect wise, they would replace it. Now while this might seem obvious, I got the feeling that they were going to stand behind this product more than a lot of companies would.

And besides, they're being build for production; tough and reliable.

Hi,

It's standard practice on an expensive shoot to have a back up camera body. 1 hour of lost production could well cost far more than a Red camera body.

Well if I would have a super big job, depending on my camera, I would not rely on any camera, I would make sure that I have a back-up plan in place before I begin, I would not put that issue on my camera manufacturer. Since I'm not in the US, I would make sure that I have connections with fellow red owners that can help me out, or have a rental house have a camera on standby. I think that these issues will be resolved with the help of other red owners, and if you have a big BIG job, you could probably afford 2 Red's... =) One for shooting and the otherone for behind the scenes, and if there is a problem with the main... switch...

Well this is why all of us should have very good insureance on these cameras. Full cost replacement insurence would be the way to go. That way if the camera price dose go up you don't get stuck with out enough money to buy a new one. I think the real question here should be what type of warentee are we getting with the camera. A 1, 2 year. So many hours on the camera? what? if there is a problem with the sensor will we just get a new sensor or will we get a new camera? or will we just get a break on buying a new camera? Those are the really questions.

I've reserved two cameras.
And two lenses.
Thinking about a rapid replacement of the leading camera, just in case.
The price point of this camera permit this kind of precautions.
We have also two Z1's, two Panasonic AJ-HDX900, and so on.

And we hope that, in case of camera malfunction, it will be possible to replace/repair our RedOne's in a reasonable timeframe.

Just my two cents (one cent for backup purposes...).

Remember that any "extra" cameras [meaning any cameras that people back out of purchasing] go into a repair/replacement pool.

Sorry Brook, maybe it's my poor english... But I didn't catch you.
Can you explain me this concept with different words?

The reason panavision replaces the camera if it breaks is because you are renting it...you can't own a panavision camera...they don't sell them. So i say if you want to have your red camera replaced if it does break go rent it from a rental house, but I am sure if something goes wrong with the camera Red will fix it/replace it. FYI the reason thoes POS panavison cameras break all the time is because they are mechanical...moving parts = Bad

I certainly wasn't suggesting that RED should cover the cost of repair nor provide immediate replacement.

I just have a positive gut feeling about this crew.

Hi,

as with any camera out on a production if it goes down - you have to make quick arrangements - most rental houses in LA will have a replace out to you within a hr or depending on local traffic could take longer in LA area ... most will ship next plane out if production is out of area ...

those that own their own camera what do you do if your camera goes
down on a project?
Does Panasonic/Sony send you a loaner overnight ?

i like the idea of networking of REDs in local area/national ... then if any REDs goes down and you're shooting in SF area i'd drive my RED to you that minute/day if available for tempory use ( emergency use only = try to get a permanent replacement within 48hrs weeks days ..72hrs weekends... not looking to rent out my RED)

No problem, I wasn't that clear.

At some point they announced that any "extra" cameras will be kept by RED. If somebody backs out of purchasing the camera [meaning they reserved one but can't afford to buy the camera], the camera that they reserved will go into a pool of replacement cameras kept at RED.

This makes me think that if somebody's camera malfunctions and they need a replacement immediately, they will be able to call RED and temporarily swap for one of these cameras.

This may have changed.

LOL

Funny input! We're also in the same boat: 2 cams, 2 lenses and so on. And the other two cents for backup purposes! :D

Stephen, I knew it: this one won't be your first take -- you already are/were Jim's customer... :D

what about failure?

what about failure?

We may have a complete failure of the chip block on our Sony HDCam. Worth of the used camera body about 25K price of the chip block about 22K suddenly we have a boat anchor. Now if only we could afford a good boat!!

Brings up some questions: Stuart or anyone at RED!!!

1. What will be the price (approx) of a mysterium sensor replacement?
(Please don't say $17,500.)

2. If a digital magazine hard drive fails can we put in a replacement ourselves?
2A. Will the drives be an off the shelf item?

3. Are the electronic innards of the camera replaceable in a modular way?
3A. Will you be marketing backup replacement boards aka Panavision?

Thanks
