  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Raid availability

You're guessing.. and your 100% right.

Can't tell you when exactly, but soon.

To us, cutting corners on things like Storage media is just not a good idea...

"soon" that word again...:w00t:

Cool :) Thanks Mr Land.

I have no idea what I'm talking about, but if i'd build them, I just go for the biggest/cheapest sata 2.5" drive a can find, and then I just solve the speed of the drive with a large ram-buffer on the controller card (2-4GB). Then you got a low cost - high dependable combo. And if you'd add a accelerometer, you could shut the drives down if the camera shake too much and just go for the ram. I think 4 GB ram cost $2-300, and would be enough for 2 min of recording without the drives moving at all. If the drive handle 90% of data flow, the buffler will last about an houre of continuis recording.
... just like old days when burning cd's- and was worried about buffer-underrun :)

Cheers

Had my camera a good while now, still hoping RC36 improves codec performance in this tough environment, Yorkshire, and to be able to start using the camera for its destined purpose, but the wait for Red Raids goes on.. and on.. its costing me money mostly, but its also down right annoying, especially when the only warning you get is opening up your Red delivery to find everything is not there, thanks, but next time I'd like the chance to delay delivery/debt. Supply trouble is understandable, but I think that forgetting basic customer service/communication/courtesy isn't, especially when we all have email addresses and telephone numbers.
I bought one CF card for upgrading, looking forward to using the camera..

ronx... you are 100% correct. there is no excuse for bad customer service.

We all know these things happen in RED, the changes and mishaps. But asking the customers not to make plans until camera is in hand is like asking a child not to play with a toy in his hand. I cant complain about their service, but as my camera meets the ready to ship period I begin to ask these questions myself. But hey, can you call the guys at sony and tell them to kiss your camera good bye when the Fedex truck arrives to pick it up? :P
Hell no.
So I just sent an email to Big Jon, I am sure his help will be priceless.
Where else can you do that?

Jarred, I must comment on your ability to allow customers to fume and taking some heat, thus admitting to not being perfect.

From what I understand, you guys are running around like chickens with no heads and if it was me, any slight complaining would tick me off and make me feel like my company efforts are not being appreciated.

People are complaining mostly because they feel what is happening to them could of been avoided, with the amount of due diligence you guys are known for would make me thing you have done everything in your power to avoid the delays.

I think everyone has to realize that we're all part of the same team. All striving for better user experience.

From my personal experience, RED and it's team members, have been an absolute pleasure to deal with.

No on is saying that the RED team aren't a pleasure to deal with, please don't make things up.

We all have cameras who are posting, and we are all waiting for drives, some of us for nearly 3 months. I think we are all being very patient and asking a few questions, i can't see the RED team having a problem with that.
Sometimes people just have to blow off a little bit of steam.

We all bought into the RED i don't know about others but my total investment is enough for a decent deposit on a house, and we love the camera, we just want to use it as well instead of having an expensive ornament...:)

Perspective, as always, that's the key.

We'll just wait a bit longer...and if all else fails, gaffer tape a couple of old seagates together, cable tie em to the top rods and pretend.

I agree. Like many of you, there have been a few hiccups for me along the way but RED have always told me as much as they know, and clearly WARNED me from the start that this was the way it was going to work.

Anxious? Yes. Surprised? No... Still a firm believer? Absolutely!

(Besides, I would never want to end up on that bad attitude list... :))

As always, guys, if you are every frustrated with any part of the RED customer experience, feel free to PM me, email me, call me... You can ask questions, you can yell at me, you can give constructive criticism, whatever. I am a good listener, I promise.

Thanks, and I know you know that, I should think everyone does. Everyone I've spoken to is friendly, I wouldn't like to call it "bad" service, and your still a new company, I'm just a grumpy b***ard, and I should have put this in complaints, or better still a PM.
I'm not sure how many would delay delivery because of the lack of a raid (or the logistics involved in the shuffling), I'm just on a narrow budget and learn/playtime was only ever going to last a few weeks, and they're well behind me now (and the summer, almost).
Red has built a camera (and a company) that those of us usually on lower budgets aren't afraid to invest in, which is why this is perhaps a more important issue than for cameras that cost the earth, which thankfully the R1 doesn't. For some its a big chunk though.
If I get one in the next three weeks I can probably still shoot my short this year, but it has two children as the lead actors, and they won't like waiting while I unload a CF, and shooting needs to be fast. The Raid is the only option, and RC36 also (because of locations).
I could also shoot the same film in winter (with changes), so delaying delivery would have been an option, just not the one I planned for when my number came up. Love the camera and lenses, wish I had more resources and longer English summers, much longer

Bob... its all manufacturing. I know its hard to understand, but its just the way it works. Its why people are waiting for camera bodies still... there is only so fast you can make things. If one component in the chain for a product changes, goes out of production, etc.. then it stops the whole line.

If we told you an exact date we would be lying to you. If you are ok with that, then I will tell you right now. You should have your drive next week.

Would that be this week..:innocent:

yes. but of course it was a clearly labeled lie. So don't hold your breath. Then again.....if a lie is labeled to be a lie and ends up being true then is it still a lie? :)
checking my email like i have ocd just in case the lie is a lie.....

You were in my town! Shoot, wish you'd brought my camera, I would have gladly bought you a beer, or worse yet: 8,000 beers, and call it even! Instead I got to keep counting days...
