  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Any updates on the delivery date for Red Raid Drives on backorder?

Still going out in order of camera delivery date (ie, our backorder fulfillment policy)...

One guy from RED Team mailed me about RED Drive few days ago.
He said ,they should aviable in 2-3weeks

Got to admit i am completely baffled about the lack of RED drives. 320gb of drives in a case? Why is there such a problem manufacturing them?
EVF's and camera bodies i can understand due to manufacturing, but the RED raid has got to be one of the simplest of the non grip/support accessories to manufacture. I thought for a while that the delay was due to the fact that the RED raid had gone through a re-design to solve it's in-ability to absorb shock, but from what i can gather it's the same as the original design.
How come there are not enough for the amount of cameras that have gone out, how did that happen have people been ordering 8-10 drives at a time with cameras? I have had my camera for 10 weeks without a RED drive. WE are 2 weeks in to a feature and although we get by with the CF cards, there are times when the RED raid would be a dream for us.

I never grumble or moan on the forum, i am just trying to make sense of this.

Bob

I'm with you on this totally.

We've had our camera for nearly 3 months now and STILL we are waiting for our Red Drive. It doesn't matter how good the camera if we cannot record anything with it!

The Red is becoming a VERY expensive camera for us as we're having to hire in equipment to cover shoots.

This just is not good enough Red, you are losing our good will rapidly here. :angry02:

I agree, 3 months no red drives. Red you need to make this Right!

I think red should really allow the use of 3hrd party SATA Storage, i would prefer a solid price for an generic e-sata interface.

There are so many faster and more solid drives (especially the newest generation SSDs) just obtainable everywhere that it is sad to not be able to use them. And the required 38-45 MB/sec sustained for the red are trivial today.

Yup...rentals for us would have practically already paid for a new drive.

Hope they're on the way soon...

Trival for a computer but not trivial for a real time system. There are many more things at the controller and firmware level that need to be optimized to make it viable. I've tested maybe 50 CF and SSDs from various vendors and they've all had strange quirks or flat out problems when you put them under tough realtime conditions.

On a side note, we're almost out of beta for REDrams.

There was a story posted on CML about a helicopter shoot where RED was being blamed for all the recording problems. It turned out they used hacked drives from Norway which were the cause of the problems. It's impossible to guarantee any sort of reliability with products we've never even seen.

If you fill all red drives and you HAVE to get the shoot, is it possible to use normal esata drive on the red camera? Assume you have allot of power and strong arms, so battery and weight is no problem. Can you use like a normal WesternDigital My Book with built in raid-0? (with proper cable)

This is NOT good!!!! I have had my camera for over 2 months and are starting a feature the 22nd of September. I need the 16GB cards or my drives by then!
Other wise this will not be the first danish feature shot on RED. It will be shot on 2perf 35mm.

Hacked drives from Norway? Never heard of those. I have heard of a helicopter shoot with problems here in Norway, but I heard that it was caused by extreme cold (solved with heat pads). Was the shoot in Norway? Good to know about in that case as I and a lot of others here are really trying to make RED successful among die hard film people.

Hopefully the drives will be out of backorder soon.
2-3 weeks would be great... although I dont know if I could get my camera shipped with the drive. Hopefully.

Lars von Trier is already shooting "Antichrist" on RED as far as I've been told, so it seems the first danish feature is already in the works. I sure am missing my drives too. Can't really rent out the camera without them :-(

how many drives people are on back order, maybe we can work out from camera ship dates who and when and how many?

I am waiting for 2 drives and my camera was shipped on 12th June.

I fully agree.

However, For the pioneers among us however, allowing sata access would be an *extremly* helpful addition.

some examples:

STUDIO:
- there are many quite fast (>600 MB/sec sustained) sata raids 5s (several running here).
* using these, the whole copy process in studio shots would become unnecessary. a complete step in the workflow would be eliminated.
* i am *always* afraid to have the data unsecured on any storage, raid 5 would be so much more reassuring, red shooting would be more secure.
* the raids *easily* sustain read/write together. So logging and offloading could be *while* shooting, extremly helpful in the workflow speed, and removing one of the standard complaints of red-no-sayers.

AERIAL/UNDERWATER
* with xsata, 8 meters remote are exellent to remote the drives into heli/sub/(or even over water boat) etc.
* size is a massive restriction for many stabilized systems, remote out is available on most of them. requiring landing/surfacing to check if the footage is perfect could be avoided that way.

We were serviced excellent by red with our red drives for the #733 and the #967, but just recently i needed another one, reds service was exellent again, but it was to short to add another drive, so we went with c/f. the 2xxx cams here still all remain driveless, as all drives are in backorder - a sad situation especially for those highspeed and doc-shots.

therefore it would be great to have an "proceed at your own risk/use" clearance, and be it on the base as in the sdk.

Hey Laguun.. opening up to standard sata posses alot of liability to us and the customers, as we have learned that hard way from people already opening up our existing drives and trying to use off-the-shelf drives from. When a customer modified drive fails.. people automatically point the finger to RED.

Our Camera doesn't send data exactly like a computer does, so both pieces need to be tuned for proper communication which is why our drives and cards have custom firmware. Using standard sata raids that were meant for rather standard communication, special in the higher bitrate camera modes, pose a very dangerous issue.. the kind that may not be immediately visible.
