Thanks to Peter and Jarred finally we have got R3Ds from RED Primes to play.

So let's do it the first comparison

RED Pro Primes vs. my vintage still lenses:

RED Pro 85mm T 1.8 vs. Leica Summicron 90mm f/2

REDPro_85mm_01.JPG

Shot with RED1 using RED Pro 85mm T1.8 (23.98 FPS), the picture is from RED Alert.

Leica_SummicronR50mm_01.JPG

Shot with RED1 using Leica Summicron M 90mm f/2 (25 FPS), the picture is from RED Alert.

Quick & Dirty comparison 1K Footage (23.98 FPS and 25 FPS mixed)>>>

The curves applied in RA on both files are approximately with the same values.

So what you think?

Great to have the images in one thread!

The RPPs seem to have this modern, hi-end, "perfect" look which is very appropriate for a number of purposes.

... But I totally love the look of the old glass.

I notice that the choice of the shots shown indicates a manipulative tendency to favour one lens vs another ;-)

Yes. Especially foreground out of focus vs. foreground in focus

:)

But I still think old lenses produce more film-like results on RED.

:):)

Nice. Very sharp images. This was with no OLPF compensating or detail adjustment in Red Alert.

I am glad no one wanted to buy my Leica Van Diemen set (15 19 21 24 28 35 50 75 100 135). These are great lenses and will probably will be useful to, what is considered, 5K.
As these are originally 35mm still lenses, and by the way they are color matched since beside the 100mm they are 1 out of 6 sets in the entire world which were made epcially for VFG, they cover horizontal move of the film like in Vistavision.

I am still very interested in those lenses! I am just spending my money on everything else RED right now (RPP's, Edit cc rooms, Matte Boxes FF4s) and I think I just Bought a Miller head and some sticks from you. I love my 135 van diem but I can't afford the whole set right now.

They where applied almost the same curves in REDCINE....

Don't forget my Carl Zeiss Olympia Sonnar 180mm f/2.8 lens is made in Jena 1949 that was a part of former DDR (East Germany) and it was exactly 60 years ago and the lens design is from 1935 or 74 years ago.

Sanjin, process that same shot of the flowers shot with RPP in Redcine without sharpening turned on, detail Medium or Low and process via Redspace as color space and Gamma as Rec 709. Do you get same result?

Hi Steve,

of course not.

Below are the links with my REDCINE screen shots (png):

Be nice to see the same flowers/same angle on the RPP/Vintage lens... give a more accurate comparison no?

ha! just realized you didnt shoot the RPP... still be a nice comare!

Sanjin, I just saw this thread and I also agree with some comments about the images compared not being equal. Your flowers are backlit by sun, which makes them look so nice. It's like comparing DP's, not lenses - no offense...

I have uploaded more R3D's to our server:
