RED Pro Prime set FAQs

I think its important I reiterate my frustration is with their website, not
their company. I like Abel Cine, their prices are very competitive...
and they sell great gear.

I just shop online more often than not and usually at night after work...
again, a downloadable PDF price list (even at full retail prices) with a call for best quote caveat would do wonders for my budgeting and time management...

I'd also like to think they appreciate constructive feedback... :)

We absolutely do, and we are taking this issue and particularly tis discussion to heart.

Abel is a fantastic company, who I've dealt with since my first camera, an Aaton. I'm grateful to Mitch for maintaining a presence on RedUser - he has been very generous in sharing his knowlege.

I too would love to see a full pricing/etail interface on the Abel page - I know it commoditizes the business and underleverages the wealth of experienced people on staff, but Abel is losing a certain category of business as a result of being geared towards salesperson interaction rather than web interaction. For whatever reason, I think many of the folks that frequent RedUser (and perhaps many Red owners by nature) are happier using the impersonal world of web purchase over interacting with a salesperson, despite the potential for a salesperson to add value (and perhaps further discount prices).

When I just need a small item, when I'm researching a new piece of gear, when I'm feeling anti-social, when I'm not sure I can afford it, when I only have ten minutes and I just want to get something done quickly, when it's late at night, when I've gotten a price elsewhere and I want to compare... I don't want to call -- I want immediate gratification. I prefer the ATM to dealing with a real teller. I prefer the automated gas pump to dealing with an attendant. I order from Amazon more than I go to the bookstore. I even bought my last car over the net.

Would I pay more to buy from Abel? When there is a value-add, yes. The MFF / MMB packages that are custom adapted for Red are a good example where I'd be willing to pay more. For other parts with less potential for differentiation, I'm typically just looking for the best price. I know the latter isn't very enticing from a profit perspective... still, might as well make some minimal amount of money on those items to bring us in to the site, and then take the opportunity while we're there to let us know about other higher margin gear. Just my .02 :).

Abel policy

Abel policy

Mitch,

I am also in the camp of being very satisfied when I am working with Abel - but I need to add to the voices talking about reference pricing.

I do an awful lot of research online before I ever call a salesperson - not that I don't necessarily want to talk with one - but I want to be as educated as possible when that happens. By taking that approach, I feel that I am being respectful of the salespersons time and their value as they fill in the gaps. As you have mentioned, Abel is a small shop - with a great staff - this is not a resource you want to burn out.

Late into the evening, I will often find myself either on this site or searching out more technical information browsing the web. When I find a new product, having access to a price list aids immeasurably - I'm not looking for that "click to buy" experience at 3 A.M., just a "Manufacturers List Price" - if it looks like the product will fit within my budgets, I'll dig deeper right away - and likely get in touch with a salesperson shortly afterwards. If I can't afford it today, I'll keep researching with an eye to the future -
I suspect that the majority of people asking for a pricing reference are doing it for the same reason - they are asking "Can I afford it now?"

We all know some margins can be tight - and pricing can change overnight - especially to the guy in the middle. That makes it fully understandable why publishing sale prices on the net would be foolish - no one would win because you would need to hedge the price to avoid losing money in a fluctuating market.
Unlike a suggested or published retail price, a clearly labeled "Manufacturers List Price" would give no advantage to your competition.

But again, I treat the web as a resource - if I don't find the info in one place, I'll keep looking. The more questions that are answered on your site, the longer I will stay - and the greater likelihood that I would go there first the next time - and that's a good thing for you.

With that said, a clickable link from the "Item Description / List Price" to how to contact Abel for more information or a quote makes all the sense in the world. And when you have a product specialist, take us there direct! As a customer, I'd rather know who to ask for when I call - it saves everyone time.

Hope this helps sell the concept.

Abel does not carry it. You can order directly from me- just email me the request. The adapter kit is actually part of the 18-85 support kit but I can sell it separate.

PM sent, I

I need this too. (Just the separate piece) as my Angeneuix already has a built in support. its just too short to reach low bridge...

thanks!

Brian,

Thank you. That is an interesting and useful perspective and it will definitely be taken into consideration. We are serious about this.

Unfortunately we had a pretty bad experience with Abel Cine Sales. Not having prices on the page and not responding to quote requests sure doesn't help.

Would this be of any help to support the Red Pro 300mm?

Thanks,
Emmanuel

could someone from the red team please give me an approximation as to when the individual Red Pro Primes are going to be available for sale?

I thought I saw the target date somewhere but I couldn't find it when I searched.

That's all it takes. We can do miracles with these. I looked at the lens, there isn't much room there. email me at jacek@optitek.org and I'll design and make one if there are twenty buyers...
I did that for the Nikon ProLock and it worked.
Group buy, 20 pieces and I'll do something really slick.
On another note you don't really want to use front filters on long lenses. The filters have to be extremely flat(1/4 wave) not to affect image quality. Front filter users on tele lenses- beware!!!

Firstly. Got our hands on two sets of the RPP's this week and are really impressed with them. Having Cookes and Master Primes as the usual work horses in here you find it hard to be impressed by other lenses but Red has managed to do i again. I raise my hat(again) to you all at Red.

Has anyone used a PL Doubler on the RPP's and do they work? Only asking because the RPP's have a larger back element so I'm not sure if they will be compatible with standard Doublers like the 2x Schneider.

Our RED Pro Primes are on the truck for delivery now (quite excited). I was surprised that they were shipped the day after payment cleared. We took a while to make the final payment due to missing the ready to ship email. I would suggest that anyone waiting on the email check their junk filters... especially if you are using Dreamhost. Heck I still haven't managed to find the original email. Be careful also to check the wire info coming from RED... there was a mistake in our email where the CU number was repeated for the Bank Account number... so the wire got rejected. Just be diligent and save yourselves from headaches.

I paid for my set over two weeks ago and still haven't received tracking numbers yet - nor a notice about when I can expect to receive it. Apparently - because metric sets are still being QA'ed... ?!

nevermind, (just testing)

Just a quick question... do all the RED Pro Primes serial number start with a PL, PI or a P1? Out of our 5 lenses only one serial has a 1 in it... hard to confirm if its suppose to be L, I or 1 after P.
