  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Pro Prime set FAQs

I still find it puzzling as to why a 3/8" hole wasn't incorporated into the the 18-85 or 300mm Pro lens. The lenses without a doubt both need support and yet RED didn't make it easy to attach anything to these lenses for that support. The 18-85 really needs additional mount points for a carry handle and/or motor bracket... But oh well...

I don't own the 18-85, but I have used one. Nice lens, this is really my only complaint about that lens.

I own the 300mm Pro, once again it's a really nice lens. I originally made my own support for it, similar to what Sean describes. I've since started using the Zacuto lens support and it works great too. But a 3/8" threaded hole like on the original RED 300 would have been a lot better.

I second that Jeff
I can't figure out that one either.
I would think that if ET or Duclos
made a more affordable low bridge
/ support system they should have quite
a few customers. 600.00 for an arri low
bridge on a 5000.00 lens just seems
a little overpriced. Come on guys let's
come up with a 300.00$ solution and
maybe an old fashioned zoom stick for
the 18-85.

Abel can provide some other lens support options. We carry low bridges from various manufacturers (at various price points) that mate to the Duclos or Optitek lens supports for the RED lenses. We also sell the Duclos and Optitek products.

Sounds great Mitch, but who wants to wait 1 to 2 days for an email price quote?

Nothing personal, but that policy is SO ANNOYING! and Im not alone in that assessment.

I buy from Filmtools simply because they list their prices.

I think Abel Cine's no pricing anywhere policy in the age of the internet is LAME L and is why I don't do business there.

I'd rather pay more than deal with this old school "control the customer" sales tactic.

MAy I suggest you offer a CLIENT LOGIN SITE with pricing.

That way you still get the contact info you cherish for sales... while making the shopping experience less of a hassle.

Again, nothing personal, but if you are going to chime in with a sales pitch on these threads, then since this is a community, I think I speak for many regarding Abel's decision to not list pricing.

Zacutos is $237. Can you tell us if ABel can beat that price? Can you give us a price range?

Tim, you can always give us a call and get an answer in seconds.

When prices are posted on the internet they become targets for automated systems that scan for such things and use them to our competitive disadvantage. I am not the one to make such decsions so please do not blame me. I am also not in Sales so I cannot offer up any Sales pricing. I can tell you this: We sell the Zacuto products as well and do so at rates that are often lower than the publish manufacturer's pricing. This is true of many other products as well.

Tim, I dont think Abelcine is trying to control the customer as much as they just dont value an up to date web presence, the website needs to be well designed to constantly keep up to date with inventory, prices, etc.

I agree with the frustration on lack of prices and voiced this to Mitch at NAB, and I'll let him speak for himself, but I got the feeling that they really dont think of themselves as needing a modern web interface of the quality of B&H.

When I did finally set aside some time to call Abelcine, they were very awesome, knew their stuff, were helpful and so forth. It was a great experience and I'll be back. But when it's 10pm at night and you just want to know the damn price on something, yeah, the policy doesnt help

But their service is pretty awesome. I've been thinking on how much I need a new tripod, and Abel pops into my mind as the best place to do that

Abel Cine Tech certain values it's web presence, but we are a relatively small company. We do not have the resources of a B&H Photo to maintain such a website store. What we do have is quality content, as well as a knowledgeable staff that actually understands the products and their use. Try getting that from some huge box supplier. We are a boutique operation, not Walmart. I can only say that we are trying our best to keep up and deliver the best service and products that we can.

That is my point, I buy from certain vendors for convenience, not price
and my vent is not personal. Abel's website does not look like it was cheap
as it stands, adding XML template for pricing is fairly simple nowadays.

But even a PDF pricelist that I can download would be great... but im guessing
its to also avoid price wars with other vendors...

BH Photo does not budge on their pricing even when Markertek underprices them by a few dollars and in some cases a few cents.

I just assumed the strategy is to get customers to contact them, establish a direct sales contact for pricing. AS a salesman myself, I think its a GREAT tool for customer retention... but as someone wanting to shop, its a hassle for sure.

Nothing personal Mitch  just my two cents

Hi Mitch, I would not have guessed you guys are small by your website, and I appreciate good service as much as the next guy... but its when you are NOT open that its difficult to get self-service from your site.

Oftentimes, we want to know the price, (to see if we can afford it)... and to avoid the embarrassment of asking for a quote (i.e. wasting your time)
when we realize what we are interested in, is out of our budget.

could not agree more with this statement

I have found that Abel Cine Tech to be very quick with pricing info-I have been an Abel fan for years. Matt Livingston has been my sales person for about a year, I also believe they (the sales team) are not on commission, a plus for me.
Keep up the good work Mitch.

I think its important I reiterate my frustration is with their website, not
their company. I like Abel Cine, their prices are very competitive...
and they sell great gear.

I just shop online more often than not and usually at night after work...
again, a downloadable PDF price list (even at full retail prices) with a call for best quote caveat would do wonders for my budgeting and time management...

I'd also like to think they appreciate constructive feedback... :)

Dealt with both companies Today, Filmtools on-line and Abel on the phone. I also PM'd Mitch and he steered me to sales right away via REDUSER.
Sales called me right back but the ARRI low Bridge is currently out of stock
I ended up getting it online. Filmtools has a much easier online customer experience. Abels search engine is complicated. But Mitch told me there are 14,000 items not listed on site! personally I dont want to talk to anyone but that is just cuz i'm teed off spending 585.00 on an ARRI low bridge! Both have been great resources.

still no luck finding lens cradle for RPP 300mm
I talked to Mattew Duclos todayand he has yet to see the lens. Anyone have
one nearby? He seemed pretty busy so I don't think he is jumping on it anytime soon.
Any other 300mm owners have any better luck. Thanks

Abel does not carry it. You can order directly from me- just email me the request. The adapter kit is actually part of the 18-85 support kit but I can sell it separate.
