  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

Not studio ready yet. But perfect for many situations, steadicam, travel (which is why I want it) and modularity so it can an evolve into more. Awesome. In store today maybe??

How did you know I needed another mattebox- next week. Hoping it comes in a custom molded box, that I can drop in a Pelican- like the O'connor FF did.

That would be sweet! I like custom molded rather than a box with dividers like most mattebox cases I've seen.

There certainly is a time and place for streak and star filters.

Peter and Rob, many of those streaks you see are artifacts of using an anamorphic lens, not a filter. The top image you posted, for sure -- you can tell because the out-of-focus background is stretchy. And I know they shot Star Trek on anamorphics. Not sure about the other ones though. That said, I don't think there's anything wrong with throwing some streaky flares in there, if you want to give it some style. But I'd tend to do it in post with something like Knoll Light Factory, just so you have the option of removing them later on if you want.

I am a big proponent of Red and it's cameras. That said, no rotating stages!? For this reason alone I am not interested. I can't rotate my streak filter and other specialty angle dependent filters? 100% no go for me.

Don't forget you can rotate the whole matte box, in a pinch. I know, it'd look kinda silly, but might be enough for most purposes. I think with the add-on rotating stages, it might be a nice compromise between stripped-down lightweight and everything-you-need.

I don't think that comment will damage my reputation too much, because everyone who knows me is already aware of 1 my junk works , 2, I am a camera/tech geek and 3 under the right conditions (usually some combination of sleep deprivation and a couple glasses of wine) I occasionally post stupid (though slightly amusing) comments that I will later regret making . But I digress. I wonder how much the matte box weighs ( I can't wait to replace my red rock micro mb)

That's funny, I thought Joseph was criticizing the other guy for his unfunny response to your post. I mean, come on guys. We're in the film industry here. We're not dealing with Japanese businessmen. I don't think anyone is above some harmless penis humor.

Obligatory razz: Everyone who knows you knows your junk works? What kind of movies do you make again? ;)

Also: Yeah, the Red Rock Micro can be a pain.

Give the web team a bit to put it up on the website... i kinda surprised them with this post :)

And you are correct.. people asking for a big swing away mattebox with 6 rotating trays etc. etc. etc. are best to pick up something else. This is, as you said, a lightweight clamp on mattebox, for use much like the LMB-5 or any other lightweight mattebox is designed for..

Well we wil be getting few of this for sure!!

For big Swing Away we have the MB28 ;)

One of the coolest things about this is that nobody was expecting it and it just popped up.

I'm pretty sure I saw a 'if RED made a matte box it would look like this' post in the last couple of weeks, probably from Jim, with a rendering of what has subsequently been announced as a product.

Sure, but they were not giving any indication that we would have it in our hands any time soon. No announcement, just a tease. Then nothing, and then bam, here it is, ready to ship...

ha ha ha streak filter? really? my lord. I was sure those all got shipped to a remote island many, many years ago and turned into CocaCola bottles. ..and for the rest of you.. if you decide to put a streak filter in our mattebox.. no matter how clever or creative you think you are being... your warranty is void.

heh heh heh.

Streak filters or heavy handed use of Cokin-like "jambon et fromage" filters could be mitigated by a release of real RED Pro Anamorphics. Or in the very least, a front (semi-pro?) anamorphic adaptor (I'm not sure how feasible it is with RPPs). I will take a good RED Pro Diopter kit any day in the meantime!

...definitely considering this MB vs LMB 5

This looks great! Keep the surprises coming!

I wonder how it will compare to the OConnor O-Box - they're priced about the same.

Man I am so excited to see this beast arrive, lots of anticipation for a RED brand MB, look forward to takin delivery on one.

it's all ramping up to NAB :D This is going to be an EPIC year!

Great news! I think this will be an awesome add-on to a light Epic config, which is what I'm heading towards more and more. I'm tired of the heavyweight of the gear and lengthy lego work. I can't wait to get my camera out of the bag like a camcorder for spontaneous 5K shooting, Mike Figgis style...

I have a MB20 for more heavy studio work, this Red MB will have its own use... It's like having different tripods: no one likes to run around town with an O'Connor 2060, trust me!

Oh and the complaining gang, Arri makes like a dozen different MBs, guess why? None of them is perfect in all situations, but they all have their raison d'être... Which is the case of Red's MB as well IMO...

Rock on Red!

(Oh and when will we get a Red tripod???)

Do you expect a nice flow of stock for the next few weeks or should I be waiting and refreshing the RED Store to get my order in? My wallet waits in anticipation...
