  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED PRO Mattebox

ha ha ha streak filter? really? my lord. I was sure those all got shipped to a remote island many, many years ago and turned into CocaCola bottles.

no problem Rob. More than happy for you to move on.. i promise my feelings wont be hurt :)

and for the rest of you.. if you decide to put a streak filter in our mattebox.. no matter how clever or creative you think you are being... your warranty is void.

heh heh heh.

Come on now Jarred, I am one of the most loyal (and vocal) supporters of Red you will ever find, and there is no need to make fun of me.

Besides, Tron, the latest Star Trek, many music videos from top artists in 2010 and 2011, Fringe (T.V. show) all of these make frequent use of real optical streak filters at various angles (Fringe many times per episode, this year - and there are always several densities on set) . Do you think J.J. and his D.P.s are laughable too? Are they not "cool" enough, as your mocking comments seem to indicate you feel I am not, because they, like I, use a popular filter that in my opinion, like theirs, has its time and place and adds something nice to the frame at times, when not abused?

How about David Mullen - he sometimes used streak filters too, and soft grads, which also require a rotating filter stage. I suppose he, therefore, also merits your derision.

Not cool.

My criticisms on your new matte box are valid for the way I shoot, and I'd like to think that the way I shoot itself is a valid choice, that way including the enthusiastic use of Red Camera. My positive comments on it are as sincere as are my shortcomings about this new matte box, and some people generally take what I say (including the good things I say about Red Camera) seriously because I am willing to also be critical.

hehehe.... the mattebox which always was on "won't comment" status? ;)
and here it is. awesome. looks great. love the carbon fibre! sweet coolness!

Speaking of clip on, is that a NATO rail clip for the Gunner I see at the bottom of the frame?

There certainly is a time and place for streak and star filters.

I don't think they ever took it off for this shoot.

I would be even more concerned about polarizers. They are on every set, and they almost always need to be dialed in.

It seems to me that Jarred is accurately comparing this to an Arriflex LMB-5; a lightweight option that also lacks a rotating stage.

However, if a rotating stage option is available in the future that will be a very good thing.

Rob, don't take it so hard. It must've been something like 1 AM when Jarred posted that pic, obviously super excited to be able to post about a new product that is just about to ship. Imagine his reaction when he gets comments like "but it won't do this, it won't do that, etc." when it's evidently not meant to do those things. And it isn't even a surprise that it doesn't since the prototype didn't either. This is a lightweight mattebox for those times when you just need to throw on an ND or a BPM really fast on the lens, which in reality occurs very frequently. You'd still need another (heavier) mattebox in your kit for other uses.
I'm sure Red will come up with a rotating stage option at some point, but as Jarred said, this is what is shipping next week!

Will this clamp safely on the original Red 18-50 and 50-150? Any possibility of smaller dia. rings also? Be nice to have one clip on that covers our red lenses and our baby duclos 11-16.

Fair enough.

With 35mm slr lenses

With 35mm slr lenses

How do clip on's handle small lens's such as Nikon SLR primes? Iv'e only ever used Matte boxes with rails. Im thinking smaller lenses would struggle am I right? So will this be upgradable with a rail attachment at some point?

With slr lenses you'd probably want to use some kind of screw-in adapter on which you'd then clamp the mattebox. If red doesn't make this adapter you can get them from others.

One of the coolest things about this is that nobody was expecting it and it just popped up. Imagine that would have happened with Epic / Scarlet, heheh...

Looking good, can't wait to find out more and see some more detailed pictures.

Surprise

Hi,

Great ...Super....When will we see same pics of EPIC's in a lot???

I got to play with the early models at NAB last year and have been wondering when RED was was going to release these beauties ever since. They were so light and easy to work with. I'm so excited that they are coming soon!

Add-on rotating stages? Now we're talking :D Looks like a fantastic alternative to the mmb-1. And much cooler-looking.

But can someone tell me why these things are so damn expensive? (The Arri is $1500.) I mean, you were talking about offering the Red mini primes at under $1000 apiece, right? Is it an economics of scale thing? I can't imagine that more engineering work goes into a matte box than a precision lens. Not trying to be negative here, I honestly have wondered this for years.

Jarred wait I saw the same trick in Indiana Joes shot with a mirror to make it look like they go on forever lol

How did they do that? I've always wondered that. Are there two mirrors? Did they remove the camera in post? Or was it just high enough to be out of the frame? I seem to remember it craning down into the scene. No wait, it craned up. But there was a guy pushing a cart... okay, gotta rewatch.

But Citizen Kane, too? That shot was with mirrors? How?
