  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Pro lenses at NAB?

The projector test that Red put on was the thing that made me want these lense. Because after seeing the RPP vs the Master Prime and S4 I realized that these lenses where the best deal out there, hands down. It's cool that Red is going to keep that same setup down at the HQ.

Was it the MP or the UP, along with the S4, that were compared against The RPPs?

Whatever the case, Red clearly dominated.

It was a Master Prime and the S4 that were used in compairing and they showed just how badass the RPP's are.

Actually... there was a 24mm UP and a 50mm S4 in the lens projection room. The Master Primes, along with many others, went in under the cloak of secrecy a few times during the day/evening.

I don't think anyone would ever say that the UPs or S4s are bad or unusable lenses. That is just not right. They are older designs for film cameras and an S35 size image/performance circle. The Master Primes are a different breed of lens. They handle the larger image size and are "current" for anything coming from 5K EPIC. The battle will rage which is technically better, the MPs or the RPPs. That's OK with us.

I participated with Jim and others in some private comparison testing during the show. Nothing particularly deep as there was a line of people waiting to see the RED lenses so we didn't have time to get deeply analytical. We had RED primes, Master Primes, Ultra Primes, IB/E Rebel primes, Zeiss Compact Primes and a set of old Zeiss SuperSpeeds as a refreshing 30-year old tonic ;-). RED had a Cooke S4 in the room but we didn't put it up and I think those of us in the room were well-versed in its capabilities.

This brief test was private because it was incomplete and rushed, so it was more of an interesting moment between gentlemen and will remain so. I look forward to the SALT test as I'm sure do others. I will say that lens design is always a series of compromises -- give a little here to gain a bit there. It can be a question of balance. All of the lenses projected showed certain advantages and certain disadvantages. I will say that I was generally impressed by the RED Pro Primes and I think Jim will do quite well with them. I will also say that I was quite proud of the IB/E Rebels and felt they came off quite well.

As stated, these were private comparisons precisely because they were so incomplete that they could lead to very inaccurate conclusions. I'll leave it at that except to say that it was entertaining and informative, and Jim was a gentleman as always.

And Jarred, put your shoes back on.

By the way, it was commented to me that some people felt that I was handing out info on the origins of the RED primes at NAB. I have a pretty good idea who designed them as well as a pretty good idea who builds them. But I will also say that it doesn't really matter. If they are good designs and good construction then who really cares? I can tell you that if it is who I believe on both counts, then that's a pretty good thing. I hope that satisfies the curious because I won't be the one to spill the beans any further.

Mitch didn't mention those shoes must be identical - pick whatever suits you :) could be even in PL mount :)

I'm eagerly waiting for new round of real-world tests with RPPs. Because Peter Majtan and several other big guys were heavily excited, I have no doubts I will be, too.

... As for Jannard and crew.
Typical RED style. Take aim at the industry leader and and blow them away.
Pirates I tell you. Pirates!

So, can this be construed as some sort of review/endorsement by the connoisseur du glass? Neither Mitch nor Duclos, or any of the other big guns for that matter, has ventured a real opinion based on what they saw, except for the usual "impressive, they will do well" and other vague statements. The industry leader being Zeiss, more specifically the Master Primes, does this mean that the Red Primes blow them away? In your humble opinion, and without all needed elements for a definitive review, that is...

I still haven't had my way with the RPPs.
As Mitch said, our private test with the RPPs, MPs, UPs, and Rebels was very quick and dirty.
I'll reserve judgment until I can use a setup that I approve of and give the lenses my complete attention.

Sounds personal, would that require a darkened room, privacy, plenty of time, and perhaps a bottle or two of bubbly? :-)

I look forward to your review.

Haha. Im very passionate about my glass. No joke.
Your example sounds about right... Except for the last item.

I find this whole "buy by the 29th" or lose your place, hype marketing at its best and worst. I declined as I find something about that approach somewhat slimy. Good for RED, especially if the lenses aren't the 2nd coming. Bad for those of us who just can't buy on faith and for those who buy and find they aren't all that. It's like they're hedging hard.

At least the iphone was out before you could place an order.Sure Red makes a wonderful camera, but their history with glass is another story.

I hope the prime set is wonderful. And once I can see them, then I may put my money down. But losing all place and priority because you weren't willing to buy on faith - is a slap or mildly coercive. I would love to hear from shooters who've actually used them on the field. Is there anyone out there who has shot some real footage in a production situation?

Most of the early RED ONE adopters bought on faith... you can wait as long as you want. The price is the same either way.

And we did show Mark (OffHollywood) and others a sneak preview to help nervous people out. We also showed the RPPs on a lens projector at the Reduser party anyone who wanted to see them. Slimy? You kidding? What do you lose by waiting? Priority? What other companies offer that?

Jim

Hey Jim.

I just put down my deposit. Did I make it in time or are you guys closed?
Also I assume that a deposit at the red store is all that is required.

Thanks
Alex

I take it you weren't at the Reduser Event. I wasn't really thinking about getting the RPP's until I got a chance to see them on the lens projector and play with them on a Red at the event. They are a very good deal as in their cost to quality ratio.
