  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red Pro lenses at NAB?

The RPP's looked terrific and felt as good as any professional lens I have put my hands on. There were a couple of times when the Zeiss guys, Mitch Gross and Jim went into the projection room for a private session. It was very clear that Jim was the happiest when they came out. One time I saw a set of MP's go in. Word around the area was that the RPP's kicked ass which wouldn't surprise me from what I saw compared to the UP and S4. It would be nearly impossible to beat the RPP since they were perfect and I watched the demo twice which showed a 24mm UP and the 25mm RPP then a 50mm S4 and a 50mm RPP. The difference was massive.

Thanks for the reporting! So far I haven't heard anything bad about the RPPs at all from the first-hand reports. If they are "too sharp" I think many people could work with that. :)

Jim, you've said that the RPP's are "red-centric," and in wondering how they perform on a different camera, I have a question that might actually be quite stupid, here it goes:
Do the RPP's achieve T1.8 on another camera or is it possible that it be T1.9 on another brand camera?

T-stops are a property of the lens, not the camera. A T1.8 lens is T1.8 regardless of the camera it's mounted on.

You could make some pedantic objection to this if your camera actually has a restrictive aperture limiting you to a larger T-stop, but I'm not aware of any such.

Just placed my deposit on my first set of primes!

Cant wait.

Im also looking for low serial number RED ONE's for anyone looking to make a sale
we will pay a premium based on the Serial number. Looking for SUb 500 and Sub 100
if possible

thanks.

1st handful are marked this way. Regular production is marked correctly.

Jim-

DO I NEED TO BUY A RED ONE IN ORDER TO GET THESE LENSES?
oops cap lock. im not yelling :)

I am just still trying to find a low serial number and finish buildout on my studio before I order my RED ONE's.

I can put a deposit down now on one if need be, but there are already plenty of RED ONE's in Portland... so I have been renting... but really want these
lenses...

lmk who I need to talk to . thanks

dont need to buy a read one to buy the RPP's... existing RED ONE owners do get a priority position for the next week however.

I spent most of my time at NAB looking at all the new options for glass. I was extremely impressed with the RPP's and am for sure getting a set ASAP. They looked super sharp and the mechanical aspect is great. I know that RED will stand behind their products as usual which is very reassuring. I also thought that the Ruby 14-24 that Focus Optics is doing looked great as well. Looking forward to putting this glass through the paces when I get them.
Peace,

Maybe they want to get there order in before spilling the beans? :-)

Jim

My order is in...

so now its time to go long and loud! :head_explode:

Those lenses are just insane for the price (like most others, I just wish
my set had the 18... ) but to hold them and feel how pro they are...
not to mention the testing...

thanks so much Jim and the RED TEAM for making these so affordable.

recession be damned. order people. thats how things turn around

Best buy selling them...?

Best buy selling them...?

You should go out to Red HQ and check out the lenses before you buy them. I'm sure they would be more than happy to let you play with them. Or rent them from someone that gets them.

I have never heard of a 15-day grace period for motion picture equipment. If Best Buy starts selling the Red Primes they might be able to offer you some kind of grace period.:)

I'm merely mentioning since we are not there...what would be the best way to test them. Yes, I argee either at Red HQ or rent them from someone else...but I'm concerned about the price? After NAB, what happens? then I wait for 6 to year to get the lenses? If I wait...

15-day grace period was just a suggestion? Sure, I bought gear before but not like this. I do tests like everyone.

thanks for the suggestion...maybe I should of canceled these shoots and came down? Ha Ha...!!!

I've been told by other lens manufacturers of a "grace-period" when considering a purchase (7 days, not 15).

But in lieu of testing them yourself, you could wait for the SALT results. Nothing beats your own eyes, but the people involved with that test make it the second best option. I think the test is happening sometime early May, but it's hard to say when the results would become public (working d.p.'s volunteering their time to put it together).

Fry's specials

Fry's specials

Yes, I bought gear that if I was not fully happy with the products I would be able to return them. Film gear is not like consumer products that you buy from Best Buy or Fry's electronics...I know that. Gees...Its a relationship you have with the third party vendor or authorized dealer that sells or recommends these fine products. I imagine if I bought a set of MP and didn't like them...hardly the case since I heard they are the best of the best but heavy.
I would get my money back or substituted another set of lenses like the UP's. I imagine they would make sure whatever it would take to make sure I'm happy and taken care of. I'm guessing MP's are not selling like hot cakes like these RPL's because of the price point. Some of you are buying one, two or three sets. Good to hear those kind of reviews.

Yes, I will see and test them myself whenever their available. I wonder if they will be at the RED store in Irvine, CA?

The RPPs are on display at the RED store in Lake Forest, CA. And you can see them on a lens projector there as well.

Jim

I'll be selling my most of my existing lenses (except my 300mm) to leverage my way into these, that's how impressed I was by these.

Now I need a case. I'm thinking of doing two smaller laser-cut cases that'll hold 3 primes apiece. Maybe stormcase? anyone else have thoughts?

I forget, are all the primes the same diameter? if so, that'd sure make cutting foam easy.

Any chance you guys could show off the primes at Pinewood studios in the UK soon?

Jim,

The 18-85 mm RED PRO zoom came with a flexible front cap that touches the front element. We were forced to buy a replacement cap from Duclos.

Will the RPPs have more solid front caps?

Yes. Stiffer material.
