I was wondering if anyone knew the front element size of the red primes so I can buy matte box lens adapters in anticipation ?
Many thanks.
Geoff.

The primes shown at NAB '08 were 110mm diameter -
It's a good size, lots of clamp on and step rings available
already due to s4's using that diameter.

110mm for the primes, 114mm for the compact zooms, 142mm for the 18-85mm.

awesome jarred!!
now can someone tell me what matte box will fit all three or at least the
18-85 lens which is 142mm
and the 18-50

and does the redrock matte box fit all three

thanks alot:wink:

the redrock will fit the 18-85. that means it will fit the smaller ones too, right?

yes but what is the price difference from the arri and the redrock
and is there a difference in quality
because it doesnt look like it
just more money for arri
and im sure it weighs a little more and has automatic windows
which i would prefer to stay old school and budget with the redrock
and while were comparing
what about the redrock followfocus vs. any other follow focus
thanks

I took a look at the RedRock mattebox at NAB. For the price it is a lot of mattebox, but it is certainly not in the same league as the Arri MB20 -- not even close. The Arri is a lot more money and you get what you pay for. The RedRock may be enough for you, but please don't consider them equivalent.

Hi,
I'm planing to build an experimental s-3D rig. Could you tell me also the length of the primes? Thank you.
Istvan

As a refernece I found the Canon 22 x 7.5, diameter 130mm, was the limit in respect to using 4x4 filters in Arri MB 19 mattbox.
Lens clears by just a few mm.

i appreciate your response mitch and as i know nothing about the two
can you explain at all what makes them different, tech spec wise
i mean im sure they might be made alot nicer but will they do the same job
please elaborate and anyone else who has knowledge on the subject
just trying to budget and the look of redrock and arri both satisfy my inner
fashionista,lol,
but seriously someone please break it down
thank you :detective2:

Please break it down for me too. I am curious as to what the differences are.

I don't think it's fair of me to do so. As most of you know, I work for Abel and we sell the Arri matteboxes (along with other brands, but we've shipped LOTS of Arri products to you Red Users). I've known Brian for some time now and visited him at NAB to check out his new mattebox. He's a nice guy and trying to deliver a product at a price point. For me to start listing the differences could be seen as my ragging on RedRock's product, which I don't think is fair.

The RedRock mattebox will function and if you are a private owner and never plan to rent out your gear to a professional production than you'll likely be fine. But I would never show up on a pro paying gig with one. It fills a niche, but it is not the same as the Arri product which is admittedly much more expensive.

Sorry if this has surfaced already... I know at NAB they told me they would stagger each one at a time at roughly 5k each and if you baught the 1st 4 then you get the 5th on free making the kit the 20k they always said it would be.

Which prime is going to be the 1st one released and is there an idea of when?

I really loved the build quality on them and I am starting think I would rather start collecting red primes then get the 18-50.

Thanks Mitch, I agree with your position and your comment. I consider both product with respect and see they address different clientele, without snobism. For my part, I know the Arri, I have used it many times, and like any professional cinema gear, it is heavyduty and life lasting, even when kicked around... So to speak... The Redrock might be just perfect for private use indeed.

What would be a good Arri matte box package for the Red in your opinion? Can you break down a complete package with costs please?

Thanks
