I'm sorry if this is posted elsewhere, I searched for 20 minutes and have given up, lol.

We just got a set of Red primes (shot some this past weekend, look very sharp!) - and I'm wondering if anyone could advise as to what would seem to be a fair market rental rate for the set of 6 (incl. the 300mm)..?

We too are trying to find the proper price-point. We have been told to rent the 300-mm separately so the price is for a five piece set. If a client wants a wider lens we ask them what they need and I have a wonderfull rental house help us out. I would think they should fall between a 5 pc set of ultra primes and a set of Zeiss regular speeds. that puts us around 400-450 per day with a three day week. Does this sound reasonable as we too are trying to establish pricing in our market and we are one of the first locally with these lenses. And after a day in the skratch suite with a class A CRT these lenses are amazing.

I imagine it's going to vary based on location and how many local lenses there are.

Market conditions and geography affect price... but the guideline seems to be 10% of the price on a monthly rental if you shop around. Ergo approx $1900/mo for the Set.

Monthly usually includes 1 free week.
Weekly is usually 3 days (sometimes 4, again depends on market)

For our market which is Indie Filmmakers in Portland, OR

Day Rate = $200/Day/Weekend
Weekly = $600/wk
Monthly = $1800/mo

Most will rent for higher and some I imagine lower.

They should be between $300-$500 a day. Image wise, the really are worth more than $500, but because of their starter cost, they will probably rent more towards $300. It's going to be interesting to see. I should be getting mine in a week or two. Anyone want to rent them? I'll ship anywhere in the US.

My set came in and I have them on consignment at a rental house plus renting on my own. We are renting them for 250 a day. I'm in the LA area. Let me know if anyone is interested.

contact me at brad@mediaboxhd.com or send me an im.

They are very nice, just concerned about the shimming issues that
are going to be inevitable. I'm of the understanding that red will void warranty on the lenses if collimated outside their headquarters. I really hope they provide a shim kit soon.

We shall see.

500-600/week... is the rate

There's already a huge discussion on this topic in the OT forum... This horse has been beaten to a pile of goo by now...

Rates vary with market. They're super cheap in LA it seems.. Like if I lived in LA, there's no way I would even buy a set because I could rent them for practically free. I continuously have people trying to beat me down on price, saying things like "So and so in LA rents them for $200/day". Of course, I have to remind them that we're not in LA, but if they think shipping the lenses here and back for their 4 day rental period is going to work out cheaper, then more power to them.

Around here (Denver, CO), I only know of my set and one other coming soon. Or at least that's all I know of for sets available for rental. I do the 5 RPP's for $325/day. For another $50/day, I throw in either the RED Pro 300 or a zeiss 14 T2.1 or the Duclos PL 11-16 Tokina... 3-day week, etc..

I'm in Fort Lauderdale and expecting our RPP's on Friday. I would also like to charge a reasonable rate and also one that doesn't piss off other owners. I'll have to get a gauge of how many RPP's are in my area and what others are charging locally. I guess a local sampling is where its at.

$500-$600 a week. Wow man, you are going low....
If you rent the whole set for that amount, in a few weeks you will have it for less and have the renters threat them according to the rental price, so in a few months you will have a set that will look like ... our troubles.
Trust me, I see rental house doing that here in Israel. I saw a smashed back optical of a Zeiss HS 35mm T1.3 after few weeks of it being rented.
Yes it can happen to everyone but I see a direct link between the price and the way the lens being handled.
If these lens are good quality, and they are, don't rent them for cheap, it doesn't matter how much they cost you and it is better that you will rent them decently for one day for $500-$600 than 6 days for the same amount.

it kinda does matter what they cost you. you cant rent a set of lenses at $19,000 for 1000 a day. its unreasonable. on low budget films 400 a day isn't pocket change. some renters will respect the equipment regardless of price and some wont. thats what insurance is for. they break it they have to pay for repairs or a deductible on insurance. there is also normal wear and tear. if you want to keep it all pristine don't ever use them and don't rent them out. I'm sure they'll look very pretty in a glass cabinet.

I'm hoping to get closer to 300 a day myself, and likely settle for less if they are renting my entire package, but I'll work out a deal with anyone needing these lenses in September, as mine will be sitting on the shelf while I am on a feature for the month.

Got disagree with you Tim, maybe those prices for the friend or whatnot, but as advertised fees, are you nuts? Let's do some shopping, Koerner camera advertises Zeiss UPs at $100 a lens, or 6 S4s at $780 and 2.1 standards at $275. Picture This advertises an unknown set of Zeiss for $300 a day, if I recall, it's the T2.1 stds.

So by all this, $300 a day would still be a great value for RPPs in the PDX market, unless your strategy is to be drastically cheaper than the other two rental houses.
