RED Prime Lens Set

18mm is a no-mans-land lens - and is always the least rented (at least here in Chicago) - People that are asking for a 18mm here don't really know why they are asking for a 18mm -

- Why do you think Cooke ended up making a 16mm? - because it's what the "real" guys use.

Stanley Kubrick is a real man. Most of his films are shot almost entirely with the 18mm.

Just sayin..

Ya but Stanley is not from Boston and everyone knows that is where all the "real men" are. Not to mention how well known Boston is for filmaking. Yep good old Hollywood, Massachusetts; I just love that town.

"We cannot produce a 15mm T1.9 and have it be in this price range"

is it the same same for 16,17,18,19,20mm T1.9 ?

There are others in the prime set that will be added starting at 18mm as we move forward. All T1.9. But that won't happen until well after we release the 1st set.

I hear you Jim.

But I still think the 18 should make it in the first set instead of the 15, then we would have a real even set in terms of focal lenght and aperture, from which we could keep adding more "special" lenses.

My 2C (though i'm wiling to pay a little more than that:tongue: )

Congratulations on the RED prime set announcement, Jim. That is truly a revolutionary feat. And there is no reason to doubt that the set will be nothing short of revolutionary. A set of Cinema primes for 20K. I can hear the "competition's" apertures snapping shut already. Ouch. Here's to you and the next wave of the best damned movies ever made.

I think you guys are asking too much here. These are pro quality lenses at a fraction of the price you would pay for a Cooke or a Zeiss. We cannot produce a 15mm T1.9 and have it be in this price range. All the others are T 1.9, and focus witness marked. We are trying to listen and respond. But keep your requests reasonable.

There is a delay in shipping primes. The project is difficult and we have made many changes to accommodate the requests. The lenses have been completely redesigned.

Jim

Redesigned!!!!!
this means a lot to us, Jim and the team seem to get those cases really serious at all. This must benefit the final quality a lot. Still worth to make the wait.

With this I'm getting more and more confidence in the whole project each day.

Would be nice if the gap between high end and affordable would become smaller. This is revolution on its best.

Take a look at where the guy that is hacking on Brook is from.

Interestingly there are like ten big budget features shooting in Boston this spring. Mass is kicking ass right now.

This has no bearing on anything in this conversation. But my friends up there are getting their asses kicked by the amount of work. No kidding.

Sorry Darren, anyways... long live 18mm!!

Looking forward to the prime set.

This is such a killer opportunity for Red to make some great lenses at a great price, why is the set being handicapped by the lack an 18mm ?

Make the set 18, 25, 35, 50, 85 (or) 75 all t1.9 and sell the 15mm T2.8 as an add on. When are these suckers going to ship anyway ?

2. The Gap between 15mm and 25mm is huge. It's like skipping from 35 to 75mm.
hey matt.. and about the 18mm and 28mm, same mood over there?..

Stop the madness

Stop the madness

I think the argument for an 18mm instead of 15mm if it keeps the stop consistent, not to mention closing the gap to the 25mm, is sound. Not sure where RED is in the dev process but that's my user feedback.

That said, with a camera that can so easily change its targeted imager size from Super35ish to Super16ish the desire to take a walk on the wide side is strong in me. How about a 10mm fisheye and a 14mm rectilinear @ T3 in the second wave of RED primes?

FWIW Brook is camera department wunderkind - believe it.

Yep, that's what I have been saying since the day I heard about these... But, there must be other reasons they have to do a 15mm first. I'd just hate to have to light a scene based on my one wide lens needing an extra stop.

You guys are all kidding... right?

There are several behind the scenes reasons why the lens list is what it is. I'm not going to explain it.

We understand clearly what lenses are most used. We made the 18-85mm zoom for a pretty good reason. What most of you don't know (love you to try this once) is how complicated it is to pull this off. It would be very easy if we could build each lens in the exact order we wanted...

Jim

Lol

You don't need to explain anything at all, actually.

E. :-)

Here is another extremely specific question you don't need to answer: Is there an approximate weight of any of the primes yet? I'm just curious how they would compare in weight to a Zeiss Superspeed. And yes I know they are a tiny bit slower than Superspeeds, but I'd like to know how they compare.
