  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Price change?

I don't think you're leaving empty handed. It seems that you've just answered your own question. You should go out and buy that C series camera and be happy. Best of luck to you.

I'm sorry Sir, but Unfortunally there is not other place to ask this kind of questions other that this forum. I would love to have a RED secction at dvxuser and priobably get a more balanced responce. My apologyes if I offended you camera decision and I wish you all the best.
But at the end I feel empty handed with out receiven a real clue about price change but mostly a bucn of folks trying to protect the equity in their investment and not showing any real fact about why is the justfication of RED been 100% more expensive. and been only 5-15% beter on image quality but far behind in other areas like: Weight, Lack of ND's, Battery Consumtion, etc

It's funny to hear that from a person, who's got no works showed. You call me biased, but trying to offence people - what could be more biased? Everyone told you - if you can't justify the reason to buy a RED and see a Canon more efficient for you - go for it.
Instead of trying to argue with people, try to hear what they are saying. In the end it's you choosing the camera and the only thing matters is your own conciderations.

There are a lot of people on this forum that can speak knowledgeably to this issue and Nick is surely one of them. Anyone, including OP, who wants a Canon instead of RED should go out immediately and buy it. Just don't troll this forum with silly suggestions that RED will have to lower their prices in order to be competitive because Canon is just as as good.

Well, i have tested both c200 and Raven/Epic-w. Own a Epic Dragon.
C200 in raw mode can definitely compete with Red image quality wise. I like the color science better. C200 is much better in low light. Sharpness is ALOT better than Raven in 4k mode.

C200 is much more complete out of the box. For Run'n'gun work i'd pick c200 over any red brain.

If you only need the things a C200 or FS7 give you then the C200 or FS7 are going to be much much better camera for you than any Red. XLRs and NDs etc are brilliant and in reality everyone would love them on everything.

If you need the things a Scarlet or Epic or Weapon give you then no Canon camera short of a C700 will do, and even then that's debatable.

I earned a lot of money with my FS7 but I constantly reached what I felt was the limit of what it could achieve in terms of image quality before it would break down. I do less jobs with my Scarlet-W but they are better quality and more interesting work, which is why I got into this stuff in the first place.

Just like a lot of guitar players need a bit of playing experience to hear the difference between a £200 guitar and a £2000 guitar, I feel a lot of shooters need experience to be able to 'see' the finer differences in an image outside chart tests.

Probably the best reply to the OP so far. Thanks for espousing what I was thinking. ;)

Thanks for you brave an honest feedback. Is really hard to justify $15,000 on a raven (4K 16:9 - close to 2x Crop Factor - not NDs) which is the lower end RED. when for half the price you can basically buy a c200 full kit. But seems everybody is happy to paying extra for the Hype :)

It does appear you made your enquiry here with the answer already formed in your mind. And have then proceeded to make snarky remarks even about the work of some who replied to you. Which professionally is a way of operating you might want to think twice about.

These types of questions come up often here. The reality is that Raven 4K will not have the cleanness you seek, that say a Scarlet W delivers shooting 5k for 4K. Which is the start of the sweet spot for Red.

Red is not really built consumer facing the way Canon c series and Sony FS7 are. You will never be quite as nimble, and Canon will put better color in the hands of less exacting or experienced shooters much easier. And easy and simple can be very compelling. See iPhone for instagram. Also, because client budgets are ever tighter for a lot of non-broadcast especially, part of a DPs job is not to be arrogant about kit but do the best you can with the camera that fits the project. That said, Red produces beautiful images. There is a color density absent in cams like the FS7.

The camera you can afford and choose to own should be the one that fits what you most like to do and how you like to do it. I think you will be very happy with a c200.

I think you got a lot of information that explains why RED is not likely to, and doesn't need, to lower prices. Isn't that what you were asking? Or were you trying to get a lot of agreement so you could lobby RED about their prices, because that isn't likely to happen. Would I like RED to charge less - wouldn't every consumer like to buy goods at a lower price? But they have no need to do so since they seem to sell plenty of cameras at current pricing.

As for me, I shoot RED because I am lazy and insecure. Too lazy to do the work necessary to dial in the exact look I want when I shoot, so I shoot raw which gives me the opportunity to tweak later. And too insecure to show up with anything but the best raw image possible, because I don't like to apologize for my work.

Do you mind sharing your data on this? I'd be super interested in seeing a more technical comparison and seems like you've done the work to get those percentages. It'd be really helpful for lots of people to be able to see it all laid out like that.

Graeme Nattress and RED have been pretty much "magic lanterning" RED since it's inception. That's what all the upgrades to the color science have been over the years - improving everything ever shot on RED going all the way back to stuff shot in 2008. There is no one on earth that is going to get more out of a RED camera than the team at RED. AS for making a RED ONE do what a new Weapon can do- the computing horsepower (not to mention the sensor and the ASICs) are just not there.

a 6k camera obviously wont shoot 8k , understandable. but maybe other things like frame rates are restricted, theyre also restricted to only using red media, and so on. magic lantern is sort of an " Advanced " mode where you have a little bit more control over your settings.
