Red Power Error/Crash

Hi guys. Yes I used the epic last weekend and was getting the "epic power spike error" camera must shut down all day. Sometimes a few times in a roll. Sometimes not for like 10 takes in. It happened on short takes, long takes, takes at 24,48,96 fps, hdr on , hdr off, hdr 5 stops, hdr 6 stops, hdr 4 stops. There seem to be no real way around it. This is Curran Giddens epic. It has not worked since it was shipped. I have seen another epic shoot all day on red bricks with no issue what so ever in any of the modes listed above (short takes, long takes, takes at 24,48,96 fps, hdr on , hdr off, hdr 5 stops, hdr 6 stops, hdr 4 stops). So good news is I have seen one work flawlessly all day no matter what I threw at it and it was so nice! Frustrating that currans has not worked properly since it shipped. It is back at red. I will email deanan the log files on monday and hope to get this problem fixed. I know this is beta firmware but it's weird that I have seen one work 2 days all day no issues what so ever and then another one that does not seem to work properly for any extended period of time. Please share what ever you can if you are having this problem so that we can get to the bottom of this. Thank you!

Jason... we are all over this trying to figure out what caused this and how to fix it. Please don't post new threads linking back to this one. This thread is in the right place.

Fortunately at this time even with the new 1.4.11 update still no issues on neither of our cameras, both on Battery power or via 220V AC Adapter.

Yeah, I don't think this is something anyone else needs to worry about. It is only a big issue with my camera in particular.

C-spike errors on our camera also. We assume it is a firmware issue but will be sending our camera back shortly if not. It happened across the board, especially when the batts are above 15V, although can also happen below this. Seems to be a red brick issue (still happens on other V-lok batts), the camera may be drawing too much voltage?

I just noticed this thread, i also i'm getting power spike msgs, camera is at red now...

Someone posted another thread. This was one of the replies:

1.6.20 should eliminate it in almost all cases.
For anything remaining we need to get the logs to further diagnose.

So ... if you haven't yet updated to 1.6.20, you should try it I'd think.

I was on a commercial shoot this weekend with my Epic-M. Latest firmware (1.6.24). Mostly shooting 2.4:1/300fps, for a sporting equipment company. Footage looked fantastic. The "yellow" dot error when recording was virtually eliminated by setting the half-down record button to inactive (BIG Thanks to Tom Lowe for the heads up on that). I think that happened only once.

On the second day of the shoot, I started to experience quite a few "Power Spike Detected" warnings, which required a shutdown-up cycle. The error would almost always happen within 10 seconds of starting a roll. I eliminated all the variables (new power cable, fresh battery, Red AC converter, and DC feed off of IDX battery charger), and was left with nothing else to try. Is anyone else running into this error or is it something unique to my camera?

Cheers

Mine is working great now after sending it in for repair. Good thing as I'm going up to Doug Trumbull's house later this week to do some testing of Epic high frame rates (hint: not for slomo).

Any word as to what the issue was?

Also are you talking about high speed 3D? Pretty sure the Hobbit is doing that already, should be neat.. I'm just not the biggest fan of 3D..

Sounds like a lot of fun!! Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike 3D, I just like it when it's rare like "Avatar", "The Hobbit".. Things that are "EPIC".

Hi All,

I too had this same problem yesterday. The camera was (farily) well behaved in the morning and then started to get the Power Spike shutdown constantly in the afternoon. Really screwed us up a bit yesterday infact. This is the first time I've seen it on my camera. Red Europe said to make sure I'm on the newest firmware, I'll upgrade tomorrow and see if I can replicate the problem. This is both off IDX HL9 batteries is various states of charge and main power too.

Really really don't want to have to send my brand new camera back to Red.

Denan, if you're listening, can I send you my camera logs tomorrow? Thanks!

Ben Spence

I just had this happen to one of a few bodies I've been working with on some car commercials. We had it on a Pursuit arm so we switched it out with another body so we had reliable takes. Mostly powering off Aton Bauer block batteries but seemed to occur with different sources and when in handheld mode. Sent camera back to Abel Cine and recommended they send back to Red. Got a new body.
