  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Best Nikon Lens?

Yes...the 28 1.4 is a great lens for sure...

If you can get by with a little slower lens, the Nikon 28 2.8 AIS is a great little lens. The optics are very good - and its quite inexpensive.

For RED shooting, I have one of those 28 2.8 AIS in my Nikon primes kit, along with the 14 2.8, 35 1.4, 85 1.4, 180 2.8 AIS, and a few others.

Many of the Nikon primes are very good...

Many of the Nikon zooms are so sharp that I rarely go to my primes unless I'll be stationary. But I move around a lot in my RED work, and track subjects that don't exactly cooperate with a prime's to walk to each framing (wildlife, sports, docs, etc.) thus the sharp zooms fit the bill better.

thats 2 stops slower :)

Late night editing...

Yes...it is 2 stops slower, which is what I was thinking, but didn't type...seen that happen to you many times here too...:-)

2.8 and slower will do for a lot of shots...

happens to us all man, happens to us all :)

I always liked the 80-200mm 2.8 AF ED. Anyone compared it with the 70-200, vignetting-wise?

My impression is that the 70-200 is more expensive mostly because of the Vibration Reduction. And I guess the Focus Optics rehousing will not make use of this feature?

Nils,

I like the 80-200 2.8 AF too...on my post # 62 of this thread there's a shot of my 80-200 AF on one of my REDs. It has good optics, is simple to eye focus on RED, and the footage from it on has been excellent.

I don't own the 70-200 and haven't used it. Can't comment on it for use on RED...

My favourite Nikon darling used to be the 85mm f1.4.
But a few month ago "I´ve met someone":

Nikon 28mm f/1.4

Incredible, incredible lense.

Jochen

I had no idea Nikon ever made a 28 1.4. I want one! Too bad they seem to cost half of what I'm planning on spending on my next camera. But I have the 28 2.8 that Steve mentioned, and I do love that lens. If it were at least a 2.0 instead, I'd stop my lust for the 1.4. Just one more stop, that all I want...really! :)
Peace,

-Harry

Well the Zeiss ZF 28mm f/2.0 is excellent.

Hey Nils-
I've actually thought about adding that to the kit, but then I'd worry all my Nikons would pale in comparison to the Zeiss...I could quickly burn through a stack of cash upgrading to all that new glass, and I gotta save for Scarlet

Still, thanks for the reminder!
Peace,

-Harry

The ruby wide rehoused 14-24mm t2.8 by focus optics also coming

Can you explain this? Will it be Nikon mount? Can we see a photograph, please?

Is the Focus Optics website down right now?

Hi Harry,

I can say for sure (at least) that Nikon zooms perform in the same ballpark than the zeiss ( i have a full ZF set), not exactly as "razor", but certainly as beautifull IMHO.

The old Canon FD ( i also have a beautifull set) were also different from Zeiss ZF, but they had their own beautifull look no doubt.

Good luck to everyone trying to demonstrate that one of these lenses is really "better", different sure! ...but better ? Hmmm.....

Cheers

Antoine

It will be a rehoused Nikon 14-24, with gears, PL mount, etc. Photos on Post #50 of this thread, and on a standalone thread on this lens forum. Should be a nice lens. Stuart at Focus Optics does very good work...

Groovy! Thanks for the thoughts on lenses, Antoine. I'm thinking right now if I was going to plan on buying one lens, it would have to be the Nikon 17-35 (or maaaybe 17-55, depending on if Scarlet has GDX iris control.) These sure are cool times to be doing cameras and lenses!
Peace,

-Harry

The lens is in pl mount and covers ff35

What will the major advantages be of using your PL-mount, rehoused 14-24 over using a standard Nikon 14-24 with the DSMC's FF35 Canon mount + a Nikon G>EOS adapter?

Hi Harry,

I could not say about the 17-55 (i have not tried), but both the 17-35 and the 28-70 are superb zooms.

If i was on PL mount (i will eventually), i would certainly certainly give a serious look at the Focus Optics 14-24. Very nice.

Tom,
First of all as a still lenes the focus is focusing in reverse not cine direction. On the focus scale from 2 1/2 feet to infinty there is 1/8 inch of travel so if you want to focus at 5feet or 10 feet the focus travel is about 1/witness mark of travel.
There is no iris ring.
As a rehoused lens the focus is going in cine direction and the focus marks are expanded. In the pictures that you saw the focus roatation is 40 degrees of travel. Wth engraved marks 1ft 8" 2 feet 3feet 5 feet 10 feet and infinity. now we have gone a step farther we expanded the focus travel from 40 degrees of travel to 90+degrees not sure anywhere between 90 and 120 degrees. there is also an iris ring. The iris focus and zoom all have cine geared pitch. internally all the movements have been modified zoom bearings stainless steel cam followers etc. I hope this helps you to understand . Also you have the option of 105mm front or 110mm front.

Any idea on the following lenses?

Any idea on the following lenses?

The ZF's are supposed to be excellent; I haven't had a chance to use them yet.

I have a Nikon 17-35 and a 70-200 that I'm partial to (though the breathing on the latter makes it more of a variable prime, and it has no aperture ring).

The 14-24 and 24-70 are both supposed to be excellent lenses (I believe both are again missing aperture rings).

Obviously, be prepared for the mechanical shortcomings of still glass, even if the optics are fairly competetive... can't beat the price though!

Cheers,
Tim

Hi Tim,

I have just ordered a RED and have the following lenses:
NIKON ED AF-S VR-NIKKOR 70-200mm
NIKON ED AF-S NIKKOR 28-70mm
AF MICRO NIKKOR 60mm
NIKON DX AF FISHEYE NIKKOR 10.5mm
NIKON DX AF-S NIKKOR 12-24MM
And a Schneider Variogon 140mm-280mm lens with a PL mount
PL Mount Super 16mm Digital 2k Angenieux Cine Zoom Lens

Any idea how/if these lenses will work on the RED?
I am concerned about the ones that are missing the aperture rings, how do I set the F stop?
Thanks Pipas
