  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red, Please Consider OCT-19 mount

Some (ie very few) OCT-19 lenses can be converted to PL. The lenses intended for the Kinhor (kinor) are usually the easiest. It's generally pretty costly considering the price of the original glass. No "adapter" in the sctrict sense of the word exists, they are all mount conversions.

I wouldn't hold my breath for Red to make this one, they haven't even been able to get out the Nikon F mount. I'm sure a local machinist could whip you up one for $500-$700 if you had all the measurements and a sample mount.

I'm just going to sacrifice my konvas, and rip the mount off it, then have a machinist make me the properly drilled spacer for the Red face.

I'm going to be making at least 1 of these. If you have a Konvas mount that you want to offer to the camera gods, I could make another if suitably bribed. There will be "some tweaking required" with any Russian stuff. Totally worth the trouble if you have the better grades of Russian lenses.

You "can" modify the Red, but it sure would be more stream-line to have this lens mount option with proper FFD. (flange)

Red wants to make a statement, and they are.

I have 22 Russian lenses, LOMO, CKBK, Elites. I love the look, they hardly breath, (some don't breath at all) as they are real cine lenses and I would not switch to any other, right now. Did not James Cameron use some beat up looking Russian glass on the $250M Titanic?

Sorry, but these lens deserve respect. Offer the mount, some day, down the road.

Mounts for Sale

Hi Matt,

I have a set of Lomo Superspeeds and a 10mm super wide angle that I'd love to use with the Red, so I might be interested as well.

I have also seen the mounts for sale at:

Before you tear up the cameras contact birger. The changes he is having to make since the new red mount I believe will create a new reference surface and from their I think it is pretty easy for them to make almost any "dumb" mount. I'm sure he will be very busy for the next few weeks with the EOS smart mount but after that they may be willing to make these and/or you could use their front surface to simplify your mount.

Hi all!
Quite interesting thread :-)
I've wrote to RED asking their mount/flange specification about a hour ago. Let's see if they agree to share necessary info to allow me to make our OCT-19 mount easy-to-install right out of the box.
If not, we'll try to find another way to get necessary info from some user of RED :-)

No any response from RED yet.
Does anyone have their Nikon adapter and can send it to me for a reference to make suitable spacer from RED camera to our OCT-19 mount?
I'll return the adapter, and will give free of charge OCT-19 mount and spacer to that volunteer :-)
I think that it will be good deal to both sides. At least I'll not throw out $500 for their adapter just to take few measurements...

We might be interested in doing something like that.

Actually we have a production up right now that is shooting on Nikon's with a Brevis adapter. We have a whole set of oct-19 lenses that would be nice to mount on a Red without having to convert to PL (though we could do enough to have a full set pl mounted Kinor lenses).

What specifically do you need and how would that work?

Basically, we need to know two things:
1. How an interchangeable mount is attached to the RED camera body.
2. What is FFD of the base of RED camera.
Having a working Nikon mount, and knowing Nikon FFD, we'll have enough info to make compatible spacer from our OCT-19 mount to RED camera.
So, we need either detailed drawings, or camera, or mount. Since I can't get drawings from RED, getting a Nikon mount seems to me a best way as it doesn't involve shipping an expensive camera back and forth.
Thanks

Hi Raf,

I think that our stuff is going in use for at least the next little while. They are in the middle of production and still have second unit and additional photography to square away.

Also, about half of the OCT-19 lenses we have can be converted to PL for about $300 a piece, so I think we're just going to go that route.

Let me know if you ever get to test that out with straight Kinor glass. I'd be excited to see it.

Thanks. I got one offer already, so I'm waiting a mount now.

I've sent a blank Oct-19 mount to Doug Underdahl / Long Valley Equipment and he's making me one. A little more expensive, but should be here in time for camera arrival.

Unfortunately, I didn't get any mount for RED yet. At the moment, we making a prototype adapter for Letus since it is only DOF system we got mount for (so far).

I should have them available in two weeks. I've made three so far for users and they report good results. I used the OCT-19 receiver from Cinevate, then made the intermediary plate.
