I was wondering if anyone had experience with the SI-2K in daylight? If so, how does it compare to the Red One? I am a Red owner and have been happy with its look filming outdoors during the day. I recently saw this clip and read that it was filmed on the SI-2K:

I was very impressed with image quality and I was wondering about people's experiences with this camera and differences they've observed between it and the Red One. Obviously the Red One is 4K but any other observed differences, particularly outdoors in daylight would be helpful. Thanks

I have a very good friend that was on that shoot, very much right in there with the camera. Apparently the camera kept shutting off when the squibs detonated, and Glazer was VERY upset ("I thought he was going to burst a vein"). They lost a lot of time that day, is the story.

i can't concur. seems awfully unbalanced in color temp to me. I'm not loving the look. Do you know if this was graded for this look or are we looking a what the cam provided?

If I remember correctly, the SI2k footage in slumdog was well balanced but showed a lot of blue channel noise. I saw the camera in NAB and was pretty pleased with its modularity however, the engineer presenting the cam said the company sees no reason to ever develop a 4k or 6k sensor (thats a problem since downsampling can help enhance the final output...)

For the money - RED is by far the better choice in my humble opinion.

That honestly doesn't look any better than HVX footage to me..

The SI2K shots from slumdog however, were amazing.

Except for the first 2 shots, this footage looks like Cineform RAW directly out of the camera with no grading applied.

yes that is absolutely correct. there is a hell of a lot of blue channel noise in slumdog.

i strongly disagree. i thought they were terrible. of course it's entirely possible it was a deliberate aesthetic decision, but it looked like very very noisy video, and the blue noise was extremely irritating during dark scenes.

you might not notice it on dvd but it is very clear on a projected 35mm print.

In that thread a text from DV.com is pasted where Anthony Dod Mantle discusses the RED and SI-2K in comparison. He used SI-2k on parts of the Slumdog Millionaire movie.

The setup of the SI-2K that was used on the slumdog millionaire was appparently the SI-2k Modular system, an extremely lightweight solution considering the quality gained.

I have used the Si2K.

It can look very good when properly graded - like 16mm footage.

But there is NO comparison with the Red footage at 4k or the general functionality of the camera.

I thought the footage looked great - not better than the red at all, but very good. I loved the low contrast hazy look - the light streaming through the bullet holes and illuminating the dust at the end was genius.

Ian K - Terri Timely!?!
Synesthesia is my shiiiiiiiiit.

I dont suppose I could trouble you to view my short film Piano Man, shot on the Red One? Would love to hear your input...

Sorry to Hi Jack!

Slumdog looks like crap, I agree.

Jonathan

Uh....yea right

Are you saying you agree with the ASC or AMPAS when they gave Anthony Dodd Mantle their top Cinematography Award and an Oscar for his work in Slum Dog Millionaire?

Your reel posted anywhere?

I'm afraid I have to jump on the Slumdog-hating bandwagon. The inconsistent (and very high) noise levels really pulled me out of the story, and the "creative" camera movements left me cold. Overall, cinematography-wise and story-wise, a film to be promptly forgotten.

Chip sizes differ S35 : 2/3, size of camera, workflow, etc. Brightness should be more with Red.
