  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red One to Red Dragon?

Very true, no argument there, just saying, that would keep all Red products non-obsolete. Maybe it's just a semantics thing, but when something is done being supported or upgradable to the newest version it would then make it obsolete.
Still love my Red One for what it is:-) Can't wait to try out that Dragon!!

We are still supporting RED ONE, we still offer the MX Upgrade. The RED ONE is still an industry work horse. The upgrade path was RED ONE to EPIC, EPIC to Dragon.

Five multi camera feature films, many many commercials and music videos, and not a single Red One problem that couldn't be fixed with fresh firmware install. I imagine my Red One will still be going strong for years to come. I've had more Alexas break down on me then Ones. Total industry work horse. Can't wait for those three plus extra stops though:-)

Is there still an upgrade path for R1 to Epic? Second hand R1 owner here-- (Kinda a longshot, but I figure I'd ask... think the door got closed when all the BTR1's went out :/)

The RED ONE trade in program has been closed for some time but yes we still offer the MX Upgrade to RED ONES.

Don't quote me on this, but I think he's referring to the MX chip upgrade in the Red One.

MX upgrade is very worth it.
With the MX chip you were able let production know that they are getting the same chip as the Epic (when they insisted on the newest and greatest).
Unfortunately with the Dragon out there there will be a "newer" and "greater", but the MX will still smoke the regular chip.

Nice try, though. ;-)

Ha! Yea, well, the fact is there is no such thing as something not becoming obsolete. That's just not how technology works, but it's still darn amazing.
When the One came out it was so far ahead of everything else. The purchase of my Red One early on was a great, long term investment that paid back many many times over.
With so many new options out producers are all over the place with what they want to shoot on. I wish it was like the "good ol days" when everyone wanted the Red (many people still do of course), but I'm not seeing the benefit of buying a new body just to have a producer for a national commercial tell me they want to shoot on the C300 for some odd reason. Features are split on the Red and Alexa now too, when it was all Red for five years, and when that 4K for 4K Black Magic hits the streets this summer you better believe production houses are going to be buying them up and telling the Directors and DPs that's what they're shooting on. My glass and steadicam are the investments that are still holding strong. I'd upgrade my One to Dragon if I could, but it's easier to rent any other camera now a days I guess (when I can't shoot on my One), but I'll be renting that Dragon whenever I can;-)

I'll tell you this about our Red One MX - when we had footage we didn't like, it was never the fault of the camera. That's why we still have him, and still use him for B-Cam.

I'd say only an Epic, Alexa (debatable, as Alexa is very heavy and lower res) and F65 (but it's so heavy it's a problem for long Steadicam) beats it overall, to this day.

I'll tell you this; don't even diss the original M sensor. Footage looks as good as ever - and even better reprocessed with the latest colour science. MX can do more, Dragon even more - but R1 M can still do plenty.

That's absolutely true!

A few weeks ago I processed some original M images at 1600 ISO and, even the noise being noticeable, I thought the original M never looked so good! :D

Totally agree. The features I shot on those original sensors came out great, and the footage was able to be pushed way beyond what we thought it could have been had we wanted to. Unfortunately producers get it in their head that they want the latest whatever, which is a shame.

I totally agree, actually I bought the BT version when it became available, after I went through the stage 3 upgrade. As a Cinema camera I consider it my A-Body and the Epic as the B-Body for Back up,
Hand held and Slow motion. The R1 has all the connectors, hard on/off switches, dual viewer outputs, records on drives and ssd, is quite and balanced and shoots 4.5K which allows the use of all 35 film
lenses. I like what the Epic can do, but everything around it annoys me personally. Actually I think Red put the R1 to sleep prematurely. It should have continued as a Studio version with a studio EVF ,
sophisticated outputs a la Meitzner, LDS systems etc. First time I saw the Epic, it was clearly trying to be a still camera with video capability. For Cinema If You turn it upside down You will find that the
lens is lower, the mike input on top, the connectors accessible, the media on the right, where it should be, the grip controls on the left where You can get to, the blower not in Your face, the EVF cable
not in the way of the PL, not to mention the glitchy accessories You need just to turn the camera off. Nevertheless the Epic is epic, but the R1 for me is already a true classic that should be revived as
a Studio Camera.

M is a gem...
I'd agree to a certain degree... it still produces a very nice picture - especially under daylight... a picture which I think is sometimes not as "harsh" as the MX-pictures. It kind of has a warmer/softer feeling to it...

Of course; the M-Sensor has its limits- especially with low-light and with non-daylight lightning... It's not by any means a event-camera or a camera for dark music-videos. But I think it still can shine in studio surroundings or with daylight exterior...

we're "keeping" our M - without an MX-Upgrade... for MX we have the EPIC now and if we need a B-Cam the Scarlet is in a good price-region and the BT-MX bodies are floating around in the aftermarket just waiting for pickup basically...
