  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red One SSD Nirvana

Have you tried to use 4.5kWS in RC42 and then activate the varispeed to 30fps? That would be very interesting if that is working properly...

4.5K WS at RC42 tops out at 25fps
RC36 will get you to 30fps

My only criticism, if you can call it that...is that there isn't 'Mysterium X' on the module. I loved this and it does help make it stand out from the old, but i guess it would make it a little more difficult with 'M' sensor cameras still about it numbers and stock. Be great to have it as an option though.

You mean that there are non MX bodies still around :)

Honestly I cant remember the last time someone requested a non-MX body. The new side module looks very different from the previous two versions, "RED" is in a larger font and has a mirror finish.

When did you order and when did you get it?

Still waiting for mine to be shipped....

and waiting....

and still waiting....

and eating shrimp flavoured crackers.

New spam technique? Just copy / paste from someone else's post!

I'm really liking the 64GB drives...the perfect size for Red One IMO. I think I'll order more of these for the R1's and use the other sizes on our Epics.

It seems the mirrored finish is because it was machined from a solid piece of aluminum. So is the side module also machined like the SSD's(well for the time being)?

here is a better shot of the side

some initial speed tests:

These are copying files directly from media to our Bright TxP transportable raid cartridges. This is not the fastest system, but it is robust and transportable. It can be seen here on the left (http://www.digitalfx.tv/services/production/mobile-studio)

RED 320GB DRIVE VIA FW800
117.4 GB - 53min 41 sec

RED 128GB SSD VIA FW800
117.45 GB - 50min 16sec

RED 128GB SSD VIA ESATA
117.45 GB - 24min 37sec

RED 128GB SSD VIA ESATA to 2 separate RAID carts (2 simultaneous copies)
117.45 - 28min 38sec

Better than double the speed. Real time for a single copy and just slightly slower than real time to two locations. Still working on some tests with a faster RAID

Welcome to the future of media baby!
Thanks for posting Greg.

Yea, really sounds like the way to go. Smaller but still plenty big! Wonder if 5k will feel better with 128's? Might want to think about that before investing into too many 64's I suppose.

So you are till waiting on a better ESATA card but you are already downloading 53min of footage in 24min... :)

Wonder that the best numbers will end up at... :)

I'd hope that's with checksums but I don't think so.
I can do a Finder copy that's over 100 gigs per hour, FW800 in from a Red Drive to 2 eSATA drives from a 17" MBP. 117 gigs in 50 minutes is not shockingly fast for a Finder copy. And note how there is only a three minute improvement over the Red Drive.
It would seem that it's eSATA, and not the SSD media, that really speeds this up.
Greg, are you using the Red Station? I assume it's the only way to offload?
Cheers,
Harry

CBS's Blue Bloods resumed shooting today here in NYC - all MX cameras upgraded to SSD modules. They are shooting exclusively on 128G RED SSDs.

Once you upgrade...there is no going back. The SSD drives are so much better. No cables, no wires...its like a giant CF card.

I have sold every last Red Drive, Red RAM and CF card I owned and am now entirely SSD modules an all three MX's

The entire camera crew on Blue Bloods is elated with the SSD's. All of my findings are in line with Dino's. As far as the Op's and Ac's are concerned, its roughly the form factor of the cards with the capacity of the RAM's. The camera just got smaller and lighter in their eyes.

From my perspective, I just gained some room back on my cart (where I was keeping RAM's), the mags format faster and I checksum faster than they can shoot. I happily pulled the FW800 cables off my cart and put them back into my bag.

No going back. No other media. Long live the SSD.
