  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

HPX300 vs. EX3 Rolling shutter example

you can see it in both, but I'm shocked how bad the 300 is!

I don't see any at all in the EX3. There's lens distortion in the upper left of the EX3 shot accentuated by the Zacuto signage that grabs your eye, but it's the lens, not the camera.

The HPX...is not good. At all. Almost as bad a 5D.

Just what the world needs, another 1/3" chip camera.
How can you hit one out the park when you're not even in the park?
This posturing reminds me of General Motors' stance when they could no longer innovate-when their past caught up to them. Guys, I'm a cheap date, I'm as easily seduced by a little innovation as the next guy, but I feel no pulse.

not too sure why this is even posted. to show us how a camera were probably not going to buy doesn't perform well? thanks?

wow that was awfull, I am feeling see (pun intended) sick just from the mild movements of the pani.

Ok, first i must thank the Zacuto people for doing the effort off letting us view these tests.

I must say i loved the hpx 500 very much in combination with ps and zeiss, and certainly because on my edit system it seemed to have much less interlacing then an ex1, but what i'm seeing here is more terrible than i could dream of and would certainly put my interest back into the R1 and the Ex for the smaller jobs.

I know I'll be burned at the stake, but the Red has some fairly serious rolling shutter issues as well. I just finished a feature with it, and I was surprised how often and how pronounced the skew is.

I love the camera, but it does have skew.

Can you post some extreme examples from the footage you shot?
Only has to be short clips.

Here is a quick couple of grabs. I keep a folder of skew examples as I'm working through selections.

I was hesitant to get into the debate. Kind of already wished I didn't, but sometimes I get frustrated when I see folks make fun of some DSLR or other camera because of skew, knowing that I often see it in my Red footage.

I've mentioned this on another forum.. but I love the Red and am grateful for the level of production value it has given my latest work. I just think we can be fans and still speak truths. It is a first generation camera after all.

BTW - this was not a hyper fast camera move. You can see it in the white edge of the shower curtain just in front of the actresses hand/wrist. And the yellow edge of the outer curtain near the edge of frame left.

Cheers,
Chris

Big shame about the HVX300 I had very high hopes for it for the smaller jobs. To that matter I still do capable of AVCintra and DVCPRO HD at almost 3 times the bit depth of the EX3 and non long GOP recording with changeable lenses it stands up quite well. I think the only next hurdle will be its low light capability compared to the EX3.

Not a very fast move indeed, very subtle if at all the skew you’re writing about almost hard to tell if it is at all there.
But yes the R1 has got a problem of rolling shutter many of us have written about it so no steak burning today...

I looked at it a few more times and you might be right, difficult to tell, but that says a lot in itself. If I were not looking for it I surely wouldn't not find anything.

Remember how bad the skew issues were with the RED early on? And how RED issued a firmware revision that greatly improved the performance (I think it was in Build 13)? And now you're seeing the same issue with the HPX300? Well, just wait a little bit. Say, before NAB.

Nudge, nudge. Wink, wink. Say no more.
