  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED ONE Skydiving

Incredible footage. There is something about watching crystal clear video on my computer streamed from a server and a source camera with 4k resolution that puts a HUGE smile on my face. I love technology....and skydiving :)
 
how do you pull focus when doing something like this?
 
Just realized I goofed on the footage link: it's here.

As for pulling focus, we were at a T16 on an 18mm... the whole world was in focus. Just tape the lens off around 8-10' and forget it.

Just one - Steve Tammi's #357 "Magnum."

The outside video on this clip was a little HDV camera. This one'll really put some perspective to the jump... both in a physical sense and a camera performance sense.

Hey Brook! Beautiful shots man... kudos to you, Craig, Eli and Sean. They make it look so easy, don't they? Two of my favourite outside videos of aerial cinematographers being filmed while they're working portray Craig - he is truly amazing.

If you guys managed to make Perris and the surrounding desert and haze look so good, I can only imagine what it's gonna look like when you take it to exotic locations!

It's just a matter of time until someone takes a RED or a Scarlett to do some wingsuit flying or B.A.S.E. jumping... or both at the same time...

First, some RED-related questions:
- what's your setup/workflow? I read on skydivingmovies.com that you used a mac pro and scratch.
- how were you monitoring during the shoot day?
- have you had any problems with lenses fogging-up because of temperature/humidity variations during the jump? In my experience with small video cameras, it's something that happens from time to time.
- did he at all bump the body of the camera on the aircraft during boarding/climb/exit? (I know I would if my head suddenly became over half a foot taller)
- have you shot at higher framerates yet? when can the fans expect that footage?

Now a couple of skydiving-related questions:
- Was Craig wearing any neck protection, or did he only go head-up before deployment?
- Is there any outside footage of one of his openings?
- Was there any fallrate reason for the barefoot belly-flyer to wear a loose jumpsuit?

Links to your clips have made the rounds on various skydiving forums, not only dropzone.com, but also on spanish, mexican, german and aussie forums, that I am aware of. Next time I visit Perris I'll look you up beforehand.

I can totally relate to that statement, not only from my professional side (post / VFX), but from my skydiving side.

I suppose this applies to most skydivers too. Being that in our sport we depend on equipment to play (and survive), most of us are always ready to shell out on camera helmets, stills and video cameras, ring-sights, audible altimeters with integrated logbooks, digital altimeters, automatic activation devices, not to mention more comfortable and safe containers, as well as main and reserve canopies...

I'm trying to get the RED onto the wingsuit world record taking place in October at Skydive Elsinore. Jarno Cordia has expressed some interest in flying.

As for Scarlet, I can only hope that RED wants a little skydiving footage on their Scarlet reel...

My workflow for the posted videos was to ingest onto my 2.6GHz MacBook Pro, grade in RED:Alert!, export 2K ProRes files and cut in FCP on my quad G5. I brought the footage into Scratch for S&Gs, but didn't actually use Scratch to grade the footage I put online [I claimed that I did mostly to get the wow factor on SDM].

I used Matt Uhry's 17" Panasonic monitor for immediate playback on the ground. After the playback/high-fives, I copied onto my MBP for grading/playback in REDCINE. If only RED:Alert! had quality settings for realtime playback...

Not on this particular shoot... but it was a typical Perris day. Most of the fogging I've encountered with smaller video cameras is generally a result of a screw-on wide-angle adapter. Since we were using a deliberately wide prime, I suspect that the issue would not be as severe.

Furthermore, as the optics are significantly larger in these lenses, they would be less affected by a dramatic temperature shift. Think of the amount of times a cloud will mess up a video camera's shot but the stills will still come out fine.

Hopefully we'll get some cloud play next time we're out. Then we'll get some fogging...

Thankfully, not to speak of. Craig is used to having pretty large cameras on his head [you should see his film camera!] so he was quite cautious. That said, I did have a few random cuts take place with the camera in the plane. I will be in the aircraft on all commercial shoots to deal with technical issues to prevent any buggered shots, of course. Besides... it's a free jump.

The camera did cut due to a riser strike on the fifth jump [the jump with outside video]. The last frame of RED footage in the clip that I posted was the last frame that the RED recorded. You can see the riser striking the rear of the camera at that point.

The camera's buttons aren't really up to freefall airspeeds. I'm building a guard for future shoots. On the first jump we made, Craig flew on his back during breakoff to try and get the air to cut the camera. It didn't on that particular equation, but it won't take much bad luck to have the camera cut in freefall.

Haven't done it yet, but Matt Uhry has volunteered a 9.8mm prime for me to play with the next time I go out [which will be great for shooting 2K]. Any time Craig is up for it... I can make a camera available.

Surprisingly enough, he wore no neck protection and simply deployed from his belly. He didn't support his neck either... he just toughed it out. He's a machine! The RED rig was just a wee bit lighter than his film camera... and significantly lighter than a 235 rigged for skydiving. It's heavy to us earthlings, but he handled it better than I would've expected.

Nah, just that he's a freeflyer who got to play our newbie jumper. :) We gave him all kinds of shit for his loose RW exit.

It's nice to see some skysurfing, eh? I miss that discipline... all of the world-class camera flyers seem to come from shooting skysurfing.
 
Here is one of Craig's deployments. I forget precisely which canopy he flies, but he added dacron lines and a slightly larger slider [edit: stock slider, my mistake].

It makes my neck hurt just watching it...
 
Thanks for posting it so quickly!

Halfway through this clip, the action freezes just after the main bag gets extracted from the container, but we can't see linestretch or the opening shock. Is this the way it should be?
