Been using my Red ONE for a little while now and have had great times using it. Really loving the footage it produces. The only thing making it a hassle is the Red DRIVE (HDD) and CF cards.
So after a long trawl through forums and google i have found enough data to 3D Model the RED mag module that mounts to the side of the camera.

Im just checking if there is any interest for this seeing as they are more or less unobtainable unless you buy a camera with it. and seeing that Jarred himself supports some projects with the red one to keep it alive and still producing in 2020-2021 i would like to bring this alive and help out the crowd.

I will start 3d scanning and modeling in the next month and then move onto the electronics (adapter board) and such.

Is there anyone with a redmag that is defect or willing to donate for this project to test and scale the proper fitment for it. seeing as there are two sizes for it both would be great to make a module for both sizes.

the test modules will be 3D printed to for fitment checks and early testings. once the model is finalized and polished i will move on to CNC routing the final housing followed by raptor coating and cnc shaving the logo for a metal finish.

(Please let me know if this would violate any copyrights and or forum rules and project will be closed for public)

All updates will be posted here as soon as i can roll them out. Also if there is any interest for this please let me know! as im sure im not the only one in this boat.

Hey Troy,

Sounds like a great project.
I think there are users out there who will appreciate this.
I hope it gets some type of support from RED.
Looking forward to hearing more.

Currently rough sketching it out in cad as i feel like this would be less time consuming than 3D scanning it and cleaning up the mess lower quality scanners leave. This also leaves me with a 100 flexible CAD model that can be tweaked to perfection.
Some pictures of the first 10 minutes into the project! this will be based upon the CF module measurements and scaling it to pictures of the REDMAG module.

Amazing idea (and I say this as someone who owns an SSD module). I'll post it to the FB group to spread the word.

Please do! Really hope the RED team does not mind this project.. im currently finalizing the outer shell (rounded edges and logo will be added as final touch ups, Fitment and scaling is main focus atm)

Here are som more pictures of the CAD model so far and the first 3D print of a rough sketch-up for test fitment

Update on the 3D print, it came out well and scaling seems perfect. Now only minor fitment corrections needed to make it flush as the original cover.

Again (rounded edges and Logos will be added as final touch ups)

Connectors for Sata Data/Power and the "Proprietary" iVDR connector that the Redmag connects to are Ordered! For the first module run i will be making it for the RedMag 1.8 drives as those are the only once i have on hand to test with. If any forum member wishes a Mini-Mag version i would need to borrow a Mag for testing with that new connector and mag body for a good fitment.

Ill start making the PCBs shortly.

Final body material would either be Aluminum or Carbon Fiber. (Vote for which version you think would be best/coolest) Will Post more pictures of the PCB making process when the parts arrive so i can do some test measurements.

If the RED team does not have any problems with this i would like to sell these modules for the price it cost to make them and post the BOM, Gerber file and Cad files here for everyone to use. As i dont want to make any profits of this, rather give to the RED community to keep these cameras alive in 2022!

Currently waiting for some CAD files for the iVDR component so all the cutouts and holes can be drilled propperly for mounting the connector. aswell as some inquieries with TE Connectivity for a 7+15P Sata connector. as this one had the lots of CAD models made for the cutouts. Currently Both of these components are "out-of-production" but i have managed to get a hold of some stock for this run of adapters. The PCB design should be done by the end of this week and should be proccessed at JCB PCB and shipped here within 3 weeks.

Got a REDMAG 1.8 in along with a REDMAG 1.8 Reader. The adapter board is in the final stages and will be sent to JLCPCB for production soon. If anyone has a broken or working MiniMAG the could donate or borrow me i would be able to make a module to support those aswell.

Here are some pictures of the final model shape. Might do some more refinements after beta version is functional. Final production run will be CNC made and some limited editions in Carbon fiber will be made. Let me know what you guys think. Constructive critisism is always welcome so that i can improve!

A little test of the adapter PCB using some connectors i had on hand. Still waiting for the correct connectors.

initial tests worked like a charm. Will do some long term signal capturing to determine if i need to add DC blocking capacitors inline on the signal lines.

Version 2 of the PCB is ready to be rolled out. V1 seems to be adequate, but i feel like adding these inline DC blocking capacitors just to be on the safe side for long term usage. The SSD and Host chip in the camera allready seems to have EMI suppression and DC blocking caps added. but i have a feeling that the original PCB made by RED also has these added, so i will add them to this version.

Here is a Snapshot of the New design for V2. I am still awaiting the connectors so i think these V2 PCBs will arrive around the same days as the connectors do. so no Delays for the Beta versions of the SSD Module.

CNC versions of the module housing will be released one the Test phase is done and everything has been polished and made final. Depending on how many wish to have the cases CNC made will also decide as low quantity runs of 4 axis CNC cases would cost a bit more.

New Update to the Case model, Some more refined edges, an a little adjustment to the SSD Slot opening for better fitment, and some optimization.
I also added the RED Logo (Let me know if this is not okay and infringes on copyrights)

We are currently 11 Hours from the first fully working Prototype! Followed by that a test period will be done to put i through some tests in the field as well as durability and wear n’ tear!
