  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red one mx LOOKS BETTER than Scarlet-X

I don't believe the scarlet uses the full size of the sensor.
Exact same sensor, exact same dimensions at a given resolution. Differences include: Scarlet can do 5K (full sensor), albeit at low frame rate, R1 can't do 5K at all. R1 can do 4.5K at higher frame rates, Scarlet can't do 4.5K at all. R1 also shoots at RC28, 36 and 42, which translate to higher compression ratios (around 8:1 to 12:1, if I recall) than the lower compressions of Scarlet.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder; and in the hands of the post production guy.

I can't quantify it... but footage on the red 1 does look a tad better than the scarlet. Just watching video comparisons of the two makes me think the r1 looks a bit more... robust

Just saw that you ordered a red one ^^
I'm curious to see these video comparisons, do you have the link?

I personally don't believe there is much difference at all. And if there is, it's negligible. But, the Scarlet in the big scheme of this things, has a whole lot 4K goodness in a modern design, that it doesn't make sense to lean towards the R1.

Interesting, however I think the Epics image is superior to Scarlet, again just from what I've seen. Either way I'm getting a Scarlet and will do some tests to try and produce the best possible image

Again .... any article? any link?

If there is any scientific basis for a difference in "look" at a pure tech level, I agree with Vladimir -

Using more of the sensor will make an image with a shallower depth of field. (4.5k WS vs 4K).

Although it is a small difference - It is the opposite effect of image degradation as you "crop in" the DOF gets wider.

It's the same reason I shoot SLR footage with a 5d and not a crop sensor. It would be more like moving from a 1.6 crop to a 1.3 crop though - so 60d to 1dmkIV.

For this reason alone, I would take "line skipping" over sensor cropping 98% of the time. But I understand we are dealing with RAW data and for RED to create an equivalent of canon's "sRAW" would be processor intensive on device.

If you only have a scarlet, you can compare the look of stills from 5k footage to 4k footage and get an idea of what some might see. As a still shooter I can tell a difference between "crop sensor" SLRs and "full frame" sensors. Although I don't know if the extra width will be that much...
