RED ONE collectors...

Sub 100 or sub 101?

Sub 100 or sub 101?

The issue of collector cameras has been discussed here before. The last time I remember this discussion was when us first 100 camera owners had to swap our original cameras back to Red for the, then, new design camera. After learning a lot from having 100 cameras in the field, Red decided they needed such an extensive redesign to the Red One that it was not practical to update the existing 100 cameras and needed to swap them out for brand new cameras. After the swap our new cameras had new serial numbers, designated as 0001X through 0100X. Several people wondered how that would effect the collector status of the first 100. I don't know what Red did with the original cameras but I would think that they are certainly historical. As for us original 100, we all received a card from Red which reads "Thanks for being among the first 100 Red customers". I understand that most collectors like to stick with one or two digit serial numbers, but I have had some interest in buying my number 100, probably just to get to the head of the upgrade path but some have also been excited about having one of the X cameras. Does this mean that when I do stage II and keep my X that someone will offer me $40,000 for it? I won't be holding my breath, but I will still be using it and it will still be making me money. So, Jim, when you say sub 100, maybe you should say sub 101?
