  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red One - Carbon Fibre - Upgrade.

Is this possible? or make the body lighter when we send in for the new sensor...

thx
Ash

Hi Ash

I've been thinking about doing this for a long time, but since I plan on trading in our 2 REDs, I don't have a camera to disassemble:). I think a carbon housing will quickly cost 1000 - 2000 $. I would aim at a design that features built-in shoulder support. If you think this price-range is cool, than I can look into it.
So if more RED owners other than Ash would like a carbon housing, post here and I'll fire up my brain:)

I've been wanting to do this for a long time as well. Basically a rehouse of the camera, with better cable placement, a way to stand it on it's ass, and a lot lighter. I think $2k would be a steal for a down and dirty carbon housing.

Ok, then let's launch this project - tell me were you want the plugs, controls ect. Remember though, that most likely everything is on circuit boards, so I think you can only reposition entire blocks. So say the controls now at the back of the red one could maybe be put to the side or top - all just speculation, need a red to take apart - any volunteers:)?
Ok, 2k $ might not be the fancy version:), but he, I^m good at keeping things simple...., I think....:emote_rainshower:

2k sounds good... depends on the design and weight loss and if Red is cool with it though...

Ash.

Obviously to make any kind of plan you have to take apart a RED, so you can figure out what can be moved, and what can't. I am somewhat surprised that some place like Clairmont hasn't done this yet.

I would be happy to take apart my camera and take photos of it, as long as didn't void any upgrade paths. My first body is certainly out of warranty, but I intend to get it MXified as soon as I can. Any thoughts Red folk?

Nick

Though I believe a carbon fibre body for the RED would be great I believe that the body already acts as a giant heat sink. And carbon fiber does not have the same thermal properties as Mg. If you were using just normal weave and epoxy carbon methods I don't believe the you would be able to disipate the same amount of heat. If you expanded the surface area with nanotechnology you may be able to disipate the same heat but I am not sure you could do this under 2k.

Just my .02

Well, you definitly will loose your trade-in option, can't see that RED will let disasebling the camera count of an upgrade:). So this option is only for people willing to keep there RED one to the end of days.

Yeah, heat problem will be tricky, on the other hand if the new housing has more ventilation in/out take, then mybe we can get rid of that nasty fan:ack2:

A copper heatpipe solution could work as passive cooling but you would have to run them outside the body so it may defer the purpose

Brian,

I miss read the thread initially. While I definitely appreciate what you're doing, I'd be interested in a Carbon Fiber RED similar to the one supplied for "Social Network", or done with RED's blessing. I'll be getting sensor upgrades, and support for a while.

Just saw this thread and I think you guys are heading down the wrong path. Carbon fiber REDs are out there as Vladimir mentions. I would like to see such an option from RED if it is truly a feasible solution. For me, I think the amount of weight saved would be negligible in most situations and the weight savings is probably not worth other potential issues that could arise in every day use.

So I would only be interested in such an upgrade if it were to come from RED or be certified by RED. Pulling all the guts out of my One and placing them into another enclosure will obviously void the warranty. OF course, my warranty has long passed, but such modifications will most likely also eliminate my future chances of other upgrades to the sensor or other internal components that may come along.

Matt touched on a good point, Heat will be a huge thing to overcome as this is linked to the stress side of things. Don't want to drop a few grand only to have the carbon weaken and crack when you start mounting things on the camera. :(

I'm pretty sure RED will up date any modified RED, just you will have to pay the full price. I do think you can take of a lot of weight, but in return, the hole thing will no longer be as strong as a tank:).

The more I think about it, I think the best way to put the RED one on diet, is to simply modify the existing housing. So I would simply put the parts into a mill and shave off whatever possible. The hole thing will be lighter, and weaker. I think you could get the current housing weight down about 1kg (2lbs) - do not think it would be lighter with carbon. And by keeping the original metal housing, you solve the heat issue - I think....

But they won't. They have said they won't. Cameras are not eligible for upgrades (like the Mysterium-X sensor) if the owner has compromised the camera in any way that would void the warranty, whether the camera is in warranty or not. Even if the owner pays "full price" for the upgrade.
