  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red One Can't Be Destroyed!

I would never continue to use a drive that had suffered that kind of abuse! I would either keep it as a very expensive external drive for your MP3's OR have Red replace the drives inside it (at your expense of course). There is no way the heads could not have scrapped against the platters at least a few times on the way down. It might not be showing problems right now but it shouldn't be trusted with footage!

If this was someone else's camera or a rental I would hope that you would come clean with them and do the right thing.

PS: I worked on a couple of the music videos you directed back in the 90's Mr. Smithee.

I never seen it happen, but my HDCAM camera was hired out and it dropped off the tripod to the ground. The damage was substantial, including broken case. Obviously, it is not designed the same way as RED One....

Hi,

I saw a producer 'help' take an XDCAM 350 off a crane, the camera & fluid head bounced several times & camera came to rest 2 inches from the edge of a swimming pool. Only thing broken was the bracket that holds the eyepiece on.

R1 is a tank. THe best built piece of equipment I have ever owned...but still you only have so many lives, I think lost about 8 of them! Some times I notice when my laptop takes a hard hit that the drive eventually fails on me a month or two down the road...I would keep a keen eye on your RED drive. Best of luck.

Yep, I'm watching the drive carefully and not using it as a primary.

Regarding "coming clean" with the owner- already done and all is well on that front.

The boards are secured in the same fashion as PCBs in aircraft and certain missile guidance systems....

Just be careful about posting stories of your dropped camera on a board where Jarred can see your IP address... :)

or stories of you opening cameras to see what the boardstacks look like....

Finally!!

All these threads about specs and output performance, I've been waiting for someone to talk about how Red cameras will hold up when they're dropped down a flight of stairs.

And now that I know, sign me up for one. . . .:w00t:

Great story alan.
