OK- I'm going to come clean. I am posting this under an alias because I don't want to reveal my identity (you'll see why soon) but at the same time I think this thread will be appreciated by many. After receiving my Red One and proceeding to shoot tests with the camera a terrible accident occurred. The camera was setup at the top of a stairway when one of the tripod legs collapsed and the whole think took a tumble down 15 stairs. The camera was on, the Red Drive was on (with 45 minutes of footage from 7 locations yet to be downloaded), the EVF and Pro LCD were attached. We all (obviously) expected the worst possible scenarios. To make a VERY long story short, the only thing that was lost was the Matte Box (Chroziel).

After hours and hours of testing every component that took the tumble we cannot find a single failure. The footage from the Red Drive all transferred perfectly and the drive has been flawless after hours of shooting since the incident. The camera functions perfectly and wasn't even thrown out of back focus.

So- I'm sure we got lucky and the Matte Box took all of the impact but regardless I think this is still an excellent testament to the build quality of this camera. That being said- is there anything else I should be looking for that might bite me in the butt down the road? We have shot over 7 hours of footage since the incident (with all of the same components that took the dive) and haven't seen a single issue.

Thanks for listening all. And Red Admin folks- I hope you don't kill this thread because of the "illegal" post under an assumed name/email. I will only respond to this thread and never use this account again. Feel free to kill it after an adequate number of responses are in. You can find the real me easily if you want (via info in signing up for the account) and I will be up front with you about everything and show you that I will not take advantage of warranty or anything else. If anything, this incident has made me a bigger Red fan than ever.

"the Red Drive was on (with 45 minutes of footage from 7 locations yet to be downloaded)"

7 location??? Why would you risk a production like this? to save the cost of a second drive?
Just because the Red Drive holds over an hour of footage doesnt mean you should.

Sounds like you should be thanking Chrosziel too! :-)

I've seen camera bodies hit cement from quite a height and suffer nothing more than a scratch. One time one hit hard enough to cause a PL mount claw to literally explode. The camera was just fine. I'd expect the most common point of failure to be the sensor or filtration.

The inside of the camera is built like a tank. The boards are secured in the same fashion as PCBs in aircraft and certain missile guidance systems. The weakest points in the body are probably a few of the connections to the power board. The thing is tough as hell. You could drive over the camera with a truck and the only evidence would be tire residue.

Just be careful about posting stories of your dropped camera on a board where Jarred can see your IP address... :)

As I said it was all test shooting. All shooting from all locations was within a half day.

I understand Brook but I'm not concerned about Red knowing my identity. This post was for the benefit of others and not to take advantage of anything.

Jarred, feel free to contact me to confirm this if you like. I just thought it was an amazing incident and one that reinforced my feelings about Red being the future of cinematography.

Wow.

I don't suppose you were recording when it happened? Mighty interesting shot if so...

I can't imagine what the audio would sound like, though... "OH NO! *bang* :expletive: *bang* /repeat..."

Unfortunately we were not in record. If we were I would have posted that as well.

Alan, love your directorial efforts! hehe Glad to hear your Red is doing well.

I'm not sure the headline "Alan Smithee Directs First Feature on Red" is something we want to see as Red owners, however . . . . :-)

OK, so you didn't offload all that footage because it was test shooting... Fair enough.

But I don't get it, why the anonymity? Shit happens.. who cares.. Yes, the RED One is built to withstand serious abuse. ...Good thing, eh? Oh wait, it probably wasn't your camera, was it? :detective2:

Bingo.

The Red One rocks! Other than upgrading the sensor when the time comes I'm not sure if I even want to trade "up" to the Epic.

I never seen it happen, but my HDCAM camera was hired out and it dropped off the tripod to the ground. The damage was substantial, including broken case. Obviously, it is not designed the same way as RED One....

They're using wedge-locks to secure the boards?

Yep. It's funny that the camera doesn't just look like a bomb... it's built like one.
