So sorry to hear that....very sad

Sorry to hear that, Tom. I will alert everyone here and note in our system here.

Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they will be caught and brought to justice.

hope you get your gear back and they are caught, I used to rent gear from you when I was in film school in Chicago, and I remember always getting a good deal...

Hey Thomas very sorry to hear. I have sent a list of your gear to the local rental houses in case these assholes try to sell it elsewhere. Can you monitor Ebay for such a thing?
You have convinced me to go ahead and put little GPS trackers ( the little pet ones like Zoombak cost 99$ at bestbuy) in our more prized cases. Has anyone heard of a kit that would contain multiple transmitters and then a hostingg fee i would presume.
The only way to prevent these scumbags is to catch them because they will do it again. All we can do is be vigilant and help each other by keeping our eyes and ears open

I have been posting this information diligently on twitter.

I live at Montrose and Wolcott and I was down the street from there on Tuesday.

Sorry to hear about that Thomas. I will probably be coming by to rent from you sometime in the next year. Hopefully you get the camera back. Let us know what happens.

Horrible news.. we have been pretty lucky tracking down stolen cameras in the past, they seem to end up at RED for one reason or another along the way so as Brent mentions, we will keep an eye out.

That's not been mentioned before. So are the stolen cameras coming into RED from unfortunate secondhand buyers who find they have bought stolen goods, or from the thieves themselves?

Both....

Thanks Andy for the heads up on the Craigslist post. We are following up on that.

I want to thank all of the people who are offering suggestions and spreading the word about our loss.

I sincerely appreciate and admire the community spirit.

sorry to hear about this. love the guys at fletcher, done a couple of jobs out of there, real pros! good luck finding the culprit...chicago right, i know this guy that can do a few things to the people that did this when you find them...if you know what i mean.

Wondering if there's some easy way to pick stolen cams.. a software 'pop up' or even just a simple published hot list or reduser?

I know it poses more problems than it fixes but Im sure if my camera was stolen Id love to know the red community of editors, post and rental houses had a easy way to keep an eye out?

Even as you say Jarred, they seem to return home eventually, a 'hot list' sticky page would be great. What cameras previously reported stolen have returned to their families, and which ones are still trapped in basements somewhere forced to shoot tragic indy music videos.

Im sure there's still some out there......somewhere.

Frank -
I have purchased a Zoombak. Thanks for the suggestion.

I serve on the board of PERA (Professional Equipment Rental Association) which has been working on developing systems to deter camera thefts. Bob Zahn, BVR, has been leading the push with camera and editorial manufacturers for years. Red's metadata serial number tag is a best first step we have seen.

This past February at the Hollywood Post Alliance - Tech Retreat, PERA received some encouraging support from Panasonic, Sony, JVC, Apple, and Avid. The major studios also offered their encouragement of PERA's initiative- "anything to track pirates".
