  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED One #281 - seriously?

Ebay is really slow with this.

A few years ago somebody put up some auctions under my name and address (not my account) on eBay. People were supposed to mail (!) the money to a different address. And you know what? People are stupid enough to do that.

I did not know any of this until I got a very irate call from a guy asking about his model trains.... We both stopped the sellers other auctions, but that took 2 weeks.
2 months later the police was on my doorstep and I was getting letters from some attorneys for 6 months.

In each case it never took long to sort it out, but I dont have the time and patience for this shit. Ebay should validate new accounts better.

Jochen,

I am that guy and I am stilling waiting on my trains:lol:.

I emailed him told him lets do this using escrow and he said ebay doesnt use escrow. BS. Well at least he is throwing in an imaginary red zoom with the imaginary red one is awfully nice.:sarcasm:

He said he'll do me a deal if I can pay right now :P

Hi, the firmware of the camera is RED ONE Build 30 v30.5.0 – Apr 02, 2010 It is in great condition, has been properly maintained, has never been dropped or abused in any way. It comes with warranty for 9 months. The price is $4000 with shipping and handling included, if you pay now we can make deal on price. In order to start the process I need your full name, address and ebay id for shipping:
First name:
Last name:
Address:
City:
Zip:
Once you give me your full name and address I can contact eBay to start the transaction. They will contact you via e-mail with more information about payment method and invoice. Waiting for your fastest reply so we can start our transaction trough eBay channels.

Yeah, #281-fake-eBay-auction hits every few months. He also has some beach front property in Arizona he is selling at a good price...

Pity the poor guy whose Ebay 100% feedback and reputation will be damaged - how do these guys hack Ebay accounts?

Has #281 now become an adjective - shorthand for a bogus sale?

"Be on the lookout, We've got a 281 in progress"

Yes, we have communicated with owner of #281 in the past. Still safe and sound in their possession :)

I got nailed by a hijacked ebay account in 2006. I had the winning bid on an Eric Clapton Fender Strat. Seller had great feedback. Everything seemed legit. Sent off cashier's check (which should have been my first warning, but back in 2006, a lot of transactions were still being done outside of Paypal, and I had had many buys with cashier's check prior to this one going bad.

As days turned to weeks and no Strat arrived, nor were any emails returned, I discovered to my dismay that the real owner of the account had no idea his Ebay account had been hijacked. He emailed me after I left serious negative feedback and that's when he realized his account had been hijacked and I had been duped. His feedback had been perfect up to this point.

I lost a grand on this deal. Ebay ultimately gave me back $200, less a $25 fee for processing. Tough lesson to learn.

Next, I went to the Police in Tustin, CA, the town where the money was sent. Ultimately, they confronted the perp. He was a college foreign exchange student from Poland. He admitted that he was doing these deals for a group out of Russia who had cracked Ebay's system. According to the cops, they were able to trace over $37,000 in cashier's checks that went through this kid's U.S. bank account, then transferred the cash on to a Russian bank.

Ebay never admitted any security problems and I was out 825 bucks.

I've done very few transactions on Ebay since. Although now, Paypal covers full purchase price on many items. If I had fallen for the same scam today and had paid through Paypal, I'd have been okay.

As always, buyer beware. Ebay accounts can still be hijacked. As this Red One sale clearly demonstrates.

We should create a new eBay account and make a seriously high bid, so no one is tempted to buy it... and of course not pay - which is why the account should be made up.
