  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED + NVIDIA Announce Realtime 8K R3D GPU Decoding

Last night there was a special event, this is more or less a summary and re-gram, but I can't stress enough how big this actually is going to be:

Did I read in about two month? Is it not going to be released in december anymore?

RED+NVidia+Adobe removed the argument that the workflow of 8k is to heavy with this release.
ProRes on Windows is tackled by Adobe and RED+NVidia tackled the decompression argument.
Since $10,000..$15,000 is a normal price for a workstation in a professionel enviroment this argument is also tackled.

Let's see with what kind of arguments the production houses come up with this time...

Looking forward to see some independent tests.

REDCINE-X PRO: Private Beta starts this month, Public Beta Shortly After (either end of the month or early Jan that everybody can use), Sounds like on target for a January Stable Release. This has already been tested pretty aggressively from what I can tell. At this stage, and Nvidia echoed this last night, it's about tweaking, fine tuning, and hardening.

Also then, RED SDKs go out. The Nvidia SDKs, the beta ones are already out there. In short, if 3rd party developers are on point they could have this ready by NAB if they appropriate the proper resources to the task. There will need to be some tweaking on resource management on two applications I can think of from 3rd parties, which will make it a bit more tricky, but this shouldn't be a huge delay to get to other apps.

You will get the best performance out of the latest RTX cards. Previous gen will also see a notable boost. Bare in mind we are talking full debayer/full resolution playback off of Titan RTXs, pretty banging performance on lower tier cards, and even better performance on higher tier cards.

If we are talking doing things at like 1/2 or 1/4, it should be also vastly improved, think previous gen notebooks for instance.

If you are working with sub-8K material, it's also going to be pretty big.

Hardware tip. You want a drive that can push REDCODE RAW data at the data rate it was recorded at. So for instance using my framesToDataRate tool on PHFX | tools:
8K FF 8:1 @ 24fps = ~162.63 MB/s

I'd personally recommend obviously faster than that. Max data rates right now are in the ~260.21MB/s range for 8K FF 5:1.

Latency plays a role, so if you are coming off solid state raids or similar you'll likely see the best performance, a decent spinning disk RAID is also ideal. Also how your MOBO taps into those PCI-e lanes. But you'll be pushing some huge data after decompression out.

Actual encode is still helped along by the CPU, but it's freer to do more now, so you will see a boost not only in playback, but also encoding.

Will we be able to see all of the benefits on the previous style MacPro tower with flashed NVIDIA cards from macvidcards?

Not unless Nvidia decides to make nice and release updated drivers for the Mac. They have not refreshed their Mac driver base in a long, long time.

Will there be a comprehensive list of what RTX cards can do 8K at 24fps?....We now have some many options at different price point. Quadro RTX 4000, 2080Ti, Quadro RTX 5000, Titan RTX etc...

Exciting times. Can't wait to try this on a laptop!
I have done some tests with different harddrives and found something that surprised me a bit. If you use lower debayer like 1/4 then the harddrive can be the bottleneck. I measure about 700MB/s on 1/4 according to Task Manager on an m.2 disk with 8k material. Our 4 Raid 0 shows a bit slower results at around 400MB/s even though it can read up to 1000MB/s.

The main use for this is if you are skimming around in video files quickly. I usually take quarter res and render it to RAM to make it easier in Redcine X.
Would be cool if this new tech under the hood would also cache a quarter res version when you are skimming so there is no delay of 5 seconds evertime you jump in time.

Cheers
/Andreas

Looks like the latest driver support is for OSX 10.13.6. That can't be THAT old..?

Don't forget the bandwidth limit of PCIe 2.x (8 GByte/s) and TB3 (~4 GByte/s). I don't know how the color information is processed but most of the time it's 32 bits (fp32) per color.
8192x4320x3(colors)x32bits/8(Byte) ~ 405 MByte/frame when you want an 8k RGB output.

Copy that. So if I'm working from a RAID 0 of spinning disks, the storage will be the bottleneck. Yeah?

Not for this example, this data goes from GPU(s) to the cpu(s) for futher processing.
When you want to store it as DPX 16 bit (202,5 MByte/frame) I think your RAID 0 with spinning drives, will be a bottle neck.

Sorry if this has been answered. Any word on when these updates will flow through to something like a 1080ti in Adobe Premiere? Has Adobe said anything about when their software will benefit from these updates?

It will once they, and this is the same for every other software manufacturer, update to the latest Nvidia and RED SDK's new features. I wouldn't expect anything before late March/April from anybody.

RCX though, alarmingly soon.

Thanks Phil! Looking forward to it. I'm on 5k with a Scarlet-w for now. Handling 1/4 res no worries and half res with some dropped frames but def passable. Full res not happening smoothly. Looking forward to seeing what these changes eventually bring to for those of us on older gtx tech (1080ti for me) and 4 - 6k footage in a UHD-4k timeline

6k .R3D (RED (7:1) 6144x3077 23.976 FPS http://downloads.red.com/sample-r3d-files/weapon-h2o-6k-24fps.zip ) runs in realtime in Resolve on a TR1920x (AUD$580.00) and a 1080ti.
In Q1 of 2019 you will be able to buy a CPU for around AUD$ 800 that can handle 8k.R3D with an overclocked/tuned 1080ti.
