  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red not true 4k

Mr Jay.

Calm down.
I meant to say I don't judge a camera ONLY by it's screen image. The sensor itself and the specs, and the workflow, it would be stupid to say those aren't important. I'm a DP. I like knowing how things work. Why they work. And why they'll work for me. alright? Is that so hard to understand? Marketing means nothing to me. 4 I can't take the fanboyism. That's the one problem with these boards. Because you all have spent 30k or more on a camera you feel the need to defend it as if it's your baby. It's alright to speak truthfully about it sometimes! I don't mean to be offensive.

Don't need to calm down Daniel.. I'm not upset.. I find this mildly entertaining. I have no doubt that everything you said was exactly what you wanted to say, and you knew the reaction you would get. So I have to assume you're just having fun.

As for fanboyism...Uhhhh, you did read the title of the forum right? (Of course you did) you know who runs this right? (Of course you do).

This is a game.. Pure and simple. If you are really the smart guy you want to be, then you know how to present facts to give rise to healthy discussion, and you know how to present them to cause something else.

None of what you are doing here is lost on me, and if you're having a good time, so be it.

Jay

many here will vouch for Jay's playfulness and enthusiasm. Any antagonism is surely a simple misinterpretation and not intended.

Yes, our friend Mr Williams is surely playing games and should be treated as such. I look forward to his future valuable contributions to the forum.

Yes, my title was inflammatory. Perhaps I should have chosen another. But my statement still stands. And I don't appreciate the instant abuse I garner by just speaking my mind.
I end by saying this,

if you're going to purchase or rent the red for your production, don't give into the marketing, and the pixel count fetish, and do your OWN research. And know the limitations/benefits of a bayer array, and understand that you're not going to get 4k of true RGB pixels.

Is it not as true to a 4K RGB pixel count as it gets? Are there other competitive cameras that do offer truer results? That being, a 12K photosite image processor?
From what I understand, this is standard representation of a sensor. 4K is the end result, thus the nomenclature is true.
Correct me if I'm wrong...

The Genesis comes close, but subsamples to 1080p

Well as long as you don't assume that if you had a 4K 3-sensor camera then you would have 4K resolving power, than yes ( ditto for 2K or 1080p 3-sensor etc)

An assumption like that would be very far from the truth.... bayer is just one of the factors in resolving power.

How so? You mean to say that the hpx3000 with 3 full raster imagers doesn't resolve full raster resolution? Is optics one of the largest factors

I should add to this conversation that the original poster of this thread is a known trouble maker over at DVXuser.... He joined under multiple accounts over there and would carry on conversations with himself, troll, etc, etc....

Our last contact ended with him telling me he was going to poop on my face, and other half-ass'd threats...

Oh, and he is now banned from this site as well.

Not welcome here either....

Later,
Jason

Jason, out of curiosity, how did you know it was the same guy?

Jason obviously has magic eyes...

It's amazing what you can see with RED's new sensors....*

Sorry to spoil the fun... that guy ain't on my good side though.

So Daniel S Williams isn't his real name...that's funny because right at page one I imdb'd him and couldn't find a single production (which is funny for someone so supposedly knowledgeable about cameras)...I wonder who he really is.....I reckon it's John Galt :bleh:

Well maybe you could go measure it (or any other 3-chip camera) and come back and tell us if you think that they do resolve their full native sensor pixel resolution...

Agree with Jason, actually I fund out last night too...

I mean to say, there is one thing for sure, and that is that Red is not 4k RGB

No one claims it is.

However, it is 4k GRGB camera that produces breath-taking images with sharpness and colour that are more than enough for high-end cinema production. While it is difficult to compare 3xCCD and 1xCMOS resolutions, the bottom line is that it delivers significantly better images than any 2k/HD RGB camera at any price point.

No, it doesn't. Theoretical MTF limit (0%) for full raster would be approximately 1.5k, regardless how many co-sited imagers you have.

The advantage of full raster luma channel is that this is what counts as resolution to our eyes. For this reason single 4k CMOS will ALWAYS look substantially sharper than 3x2k chips. In theory it should also look sharper than 3 x 3k.

But, if math is confusing, just look at the images.:whistling:
