Hey all,

I'm 95% ready to pull the trigger on the Scarlet-W and just trying to figure out monitoring options.

I was shooting on an Epic Dragon last week and the 5" screen was definitely too small, so I'm definitely looking at the 7" monitor. I'm also not sure if I love the idea of touchscreen or not.

So wanted to see if anyone had any input on ditching the Red monitor altogether and going with something like the SmallHD 702 on a noga arm in combination with a side handle/sidekick/foolcontrol for control of stuff.

From what I can tell, each approach has pros and cons:

Red 7" monitor pros:
  • neatly integrated (no trailing cables)
  • mounts easily directly to the brain
  • touchscreen gives you an extra control interface
SmallHD 702 pros:
  • more features - waveforms,
  • brighter than the Red monitor ?
  • decent lens hood available
  • can be used for other cameras if needed
  • quickly change LUTs/views
  • trailing SDI cable AND trailing tap cable
  • takes longer to attach/setup

Any other thoughts on this? I think through the process of typing this I've talked myself back into the Red monitor but curious for thoughts.

yeah the touch screen makes everything much faster... new touch has improved resolution ... you also have False Color

You might think of adding a SmallHD high nit monitor for gimbal shooting...

Larger Production monitor for Waveform and everything else

but, start with the Red touch.

Get one of the new touch screens. It's the best way to control the camera.

That seems pretty unanimous!

yeah you need it, im having the new 4.7 red for camera control, and a 7 inch small hd for viewing.

Personally I hate red touch screens. I hate controlling the camera that way.
Also, in daylight, the brightness of the screen hardly matters as all I can see is the glare off the smudges from my fingers on the screen.

I'm going the 702 mounted via a rosette arm on the side and the sidekick to control the camera.

I'm in total agreement with you on smudges. But I take a couple of cheap sun hoods with me whenever doing a shoot outside. A couple of pieces of velcro go a long way to keep the sucker on.

Isn't it hard to access the touch screen when you have a sun hood on?

I notice when using ANY 3rd party monitor on any camera I've ever owned that it's never quite color accurate (and the gamma is usually shifted a bit) compared to the native LCD. Is this the case with Red as well?

If the foolcontrol linkup with the scarlet-W is strong, foolcontrol with an iphone could replace touchscreen control.

For me, the best way to control the camera has always been with the side handle. I almost jumped for joy when I saw Jarred's post for the upcoming Weapon side handle. However, there are times when the touch screen really comes in handy. I have the old 5 inch and I'm pretty happy with it but the new 7 inch is a completely different animal. It's sharper, brighter, and has much better colors to my eye.
Unless the camera goes on a gimbal, I always bring my Sony PVM-741 field monitor... it is the monitor to rule all other monitors.

My was actually going to comment about this exact subject. I've always found that the 7 inch touch produces the best image possible out of the camera. Far superior to any other monitors that I've tried. Now if that is worth the extra cost is a totally different question. But I can safely say that the 7 inch monitor is absolutely gorgeous (as well as functional.)

Another configuration would be to use the 4.7" touch, then add a 7" SmallHD (or similar). This gives you touchscreen control and a super small configuration if you need to be nimble, with the advantage of a second monitor for more controlled shoots or daylight environments. The price comes out to around the same as getting a 7" touch.

That is going to be my setup the 4.7 with the SmallHD which i already own for daylight viewing and LUTS.

I would go with the 7" RED Touch simplify because it can control the brain, i just cant imagine navigating a touchscreen interface with a wheel, if you opted for the sidekick
