  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

Ive got to say, Ill be a little bummed having to sport a metal SSD module on my CF Dragon until the CF mini SSD module arrives. If I get it with the Mini SSD module will it be something that will be switched out when the CF Mini SSD Modules arrives??

My Dragon CF shipped with a CF SSd, with Jarred's gracious pledge to allow a free swap, when the mini CF SSD shipped. I did no know that the non SSD was shipping with DCF. Is there any heat sink /warranty issue, using other than a CF side module?

Thank you very much

Fury

I don't know if it will ship with a non CF. I'm only trying to figure out how to use it with what I have now which is Mini Mags. After moving all my 1.8 hardware. Mmmmmm now I'm kind of concerned about what I may have to do to get my camera to work when it arrives with out having to go out and buy new 1.8 hardware.

Hi Russ,

When I was wrestling with this issue and being very circumspect, as regards warranty issues (especially heat related), I kept the 256 old style cards and judged that when the side CF mini was shipping, there would be new 512 and maybe more mini mags available. The relatively short warranty and cap cost of the new cards also made that decision easier. The good news for you is that the used card market is not prohibitive...at the moment. That market may tighten, as this sort of sequence plays out. Sounds like we are probably six weeks, if all goes well before mini CF is out. Extremely kewl of Jarred to offer what he did, when I posted about the rather likely event of purchasing a side module, right after a new camera and media purchase. It seems that 1st warranty issues have to be clear, about non Mg+=, CF change outs and then the metrics of the hardware, etc..

Thank you very much

Russ email me jarred@red and Ill let you borrow a couple of my own 256gb large cards till your mini CF is ready. I really do apologize for the delay, But when it comes to media and the readers we don't like to take chances... its gotta be perfect and to do so we needed to go through another round. You wont be disappointed though when it is ready.. the mini mags really are badass.

Wow! Let me just say thank you Jarred, it was not my intent to get a loaner and your generosity is very welcome. Thank you.
I am very excited to get to use the mini cards on the Dragon as well.

This is one of the many reasons that I am always very happy to say that I own a RED and that it is really a community.
Email sent.

I scanned this thread but didn't see this brought up anywhere:

Wouldn't it make a lot of sense to have a mini-mag rear module? That way we could keep our current side SSD module and SSDs and move to the new form factor - AND have the advantages of dual SSD modules, greater capacity, Hot swap?, etc. Should be a little cheaper since you don't have the EVF connector and buttons. Or possibly combine it with some of the functionality of the +1 module.

Having to scrap the current side SSD that virtually every current epic owner has seems to go against the obsolescence obsolete idea.

Also, are the buttons on the mini mag side module in exactly the same place? (wondering if the controls in an underwater housing will still hit?

Jarred: still wondering if something like this is in the works?

+1... and a signal booster/repeater for the Redmote?... and a stand-alone offloading station for RED SSD media to HDD?

Jarred, now you're in a good mood - can I please borrow a Dragon for a couple of years? Pleez.. ;-)

I'd rather not lose ANY takes due to data loss, but it's safer to have 128gbs worth on a card, then have 4x to 8x that much get lost. It's also quicker for the DIT to offload, transcode, proxy, etc in smaller chunks.

If you're going out into the wilderness without a DIT, sure, grab a big mag. But there's something to be said about the smaller mags. Which as has been said are dropping in cost because everyone wants the 'new shiny'

Personally I'd rather have more mags than BIGGER mags.

I think the perfect solution here would be if we could save to TWO cards at once. A dual mini SSD. Only then, and only then can we be 99.9% sure that the material is going to be secured. Maybe its something we will see in the future!

Seems like over-redundancy to me. There have probably been millions of hours of RED footage shot to date and the only glitches I've heard about would have shown up on any back-up dual recording.

I think most people, once they understand the process of offloading footage, pay close attention to that process which should avoid any loss.

However, if a two slot rear module would roll over from recording to media in slot one to recording to media in slot 2... well, that would be desirable.

Well, its still a harddrive. Harddrives can break. I had a 512GB card break because of a problem with the power cable for the Red Station and did lose everything I shot. Cards can also be dropped in the ground, incorrectly ejected and they can of course just break for no reason.
So having the media at 2 places is even more secure but without failure statistics its very hard to know how big the real risk really is. Myself it would be cool to have a second media that you just format after you moved the media to your computer.

I would also like to see the warranty extended, as for most hard drives at this price point... The 1Tb hard drive/card is going to be a pretty odd price/warranty ratio...Jarred?

Thank you very much

I understand the NASA REDUNDANCY desire by some to have everything backed up. (In a sense, I'm guilty of that in a way since I have a second, although not entirely redundant, camera.

But just like the health care system that does a cat scan or MRI on everyone so they don't miss that one in ten thousand ailment that is found, I just don't think it is cost effective to create a dual recording that only a few might take advantage of and would end up causnig the user to double their storage capacity for offloaded footage. The engineers required to create such a device are needed to work on the devices I need, such as a low priced (relatively speaking) single slot rear mount mini SSD, '-) a signal repeater for the Redmote, and a stand-alone offloading device that checks footage and offloads directly to a HDD... with no laptop required.

After the engineers have finished work on the toys I need, then I'm fine if they want to work on what you want. '-) '-) '-)

Andreas, just having some fun with you. I really don't care if they make the option you want if they offer a cheaper one that fits my needs. '-)

Haha, I want those toys too! To be honest I wouldn't get a double redundancy system right now myself. I'm trying to keep my toy purchases at bay so I can invest all the money we have in our movies for now. Being financially sound is always a pain! ;)

I'm fairly certain that Jarred said this would not be possible, at all. Hope that's wrog though.

Thank you very much

I have another wish, can we pretty please finally get a internal REDMAG-reader for our workstations? Maybe dual-slot? ;)
Pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease RED.

Thanks.

Loving the new mags, but I'm sad that they didn't come with a nice case like the old ones.
My only negative comment is that the mags go so far inside the slot that it's trickier to make nice neat labels for the Roll#....hah, though in every other way that's a good thing.

What are you guys using to store your shiny new mini-mags?
I'm probably going to have to buy a mini-pelican and get a custom foam cut-out, but would love to avoid the hassle.

OH and yeah, something like the NexTO DI for Mini-Mags would be amazing, though not necessary for most people.
