• Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

Browsed the thread but have not seen this question asked. Will the mini mag allow some higher frame rate ability in the Epic/Scarlett. For example would the Scarlet be able to capture 4k 48fps with the new mini mag?

Any updates on availability for the side module/mini-mag? I've placed an order about two weeks ago and I'm (eagerly) waiting for their arrival.

I'm betting the frame rate specs of 120 fps on MX at 5K are based on 5K widescreen - and probably same for the Dragon 6K 100fps at 6K widescreen.

When I placed my order, the reader and mags shipped same day. The side module was on hold as mine needs to be engraved for Dragon. Now I notice the side module says shipping in 7-10 days.

I scanned this thread but didn't see this brought up anywhere:

Wouldn't it make a lot of sense to have a mini-mag rear module? That way we could keep our current side SSD module and SSDs and move to the new form factor - AND have the advantages of dual SSD modules, greater capacity, Hot swap?, etc. Should be a little cheaper since you don't have the EVF connector and buttons. Or possibly combine it with some of the functionality of the +1 module.

Having to scrap the current side SSD that virtually every current epic owner has seems to go against the obsolescence obsolete idea.

Also, are the buttons on the mini mag side module in exactly the same place? (wondering if the controls in an underwater housing will still hit?

probably a major forum faux pas, but wanted to bump the question

My first rant here, but also praise for RED.

RANT-
When I placed my order all mini-mag items (SSD module, reader and 512GB SSD) were IN STOCK at RED.com. I placed an order on Dec 24th. On the 26th, my rep sent me an email thanking me for the order and stated "As these items are listed as In Stock please allow for an approximate processing time of 1-2 business days before these items ship.". Later that same day I got the FEDEX tracking number. I was thrilled!
So, I put my 1.8" SSD items for sale the day after and sold them without issues. However, after I had already shipped the 1.8"s to the new owner I realize the FEDEX tracking number was for ONLY ONE item, the reader. WHAT? I called my rep and he really had no idea; tried to tell me orders over the holidays, bla, bla, bla.
Why is it that e-commerce mega-sites like Amazon, B&H, Sweetwater, etc, have a GAZILLION more items than RED, but if they show an item in stock, it's in stock, and the minute it no longer is their webpage shows it. I find it hard to believe that RED doesn't have an efficient e-commerce inventory management database strategy and implementation. Sometimes, it seems like they got a guy with an abacus counting inventory. Have they gotten better? Absolutely, but that's e-commerce 101 in my book.

PRAISE-
Of course I was mad. I have a corporate shoot tomorrow (Jan 11th) and didn't want to rent gear cutting through my profit. Anyway, so I complained to my rep again and again, and asked if the shipping method could be expedited so I can have the items before Saturday's job. All week I've been sitting with a non-working Epic without an SSD module and mini-mag SSDs. But, yesterday night I got the 2 FEDEX tracking numbers and were overtightened and will be delivered today. Yay!

PS- The other issue I got clarification on was that the new firmware is supposed to "recognize the mini-mag 512 GB SSDs", so if I have an Epic with 4.0.18 and I install this new hardware is it even gonna recognize it? The answer was that you can use the 512GB mini-mag to upgrade firmware, but not to operate it in 4.0.18.

Marcos,

RED has come along way, you guys wanted quicker delivery on in stock items we went to same day, you wanted the ability to use your own Fed Ex numbers we did that. We have given the Bomb Squad the ability to do a lot of things for our customers because of the business we are in but there are some things that are out of their control.

In this case it was a newly released item that we had limited qty at release. As well as while we remained operational during the holiday weeks other companies did not so getting additional material in for manufacturing was delayed. There are a lot of variables you have to consider that go behind the curtain some things other companies wouldn't consider but we do because of our customers. Now I agree the rep communication should have been better and I will address that.

Thank you,

Keegan

Michael:

At the end of the day, I'm getting the RED items on time for my shoot and to be fair, Patrick as well as other Bomb reps probably didn't have the right answers as to why IN STOCK items weren't shipping right away. To his credit, he got me the parts before my shoot so I can't complain that much.

I agree!

Posted the same in another thread when the mini mags were announced. I thought there would have been more plus 1s on this. Let's keep asking!

Can you have a regular size SSD module rear mounted and the mini mag SSD side mounted and switch between them at will? This would take the sting out of having a lot of full sized SSDs and still being able to utilize them in a pinch.

Or, even have a rear mount mini SSD module to compliment the current side mount SSD module.

Now that's a great question can we install the rear mini ssd module on the rear of the EPIC X and will it work. haven't seen that setup yet and I don't know if that module was made for the dragon only.

Hi Tony, as far as I know there are no plans to make a rear mini SSD. But Michael, me, and others are hoping to influence RED to make one.

That would be sweet and sell like hot cakes, best of both worlds. I don't want expensive parts sitting around that I never got to use, Even better Idea if they decide to make it, let the second card record once the main card runs out that way we can swap /unload while the camera is still recording a scene.

hello everyone !

Sorry if the question has already been asked but does someone know if the Wooden cam ssd guard is still working with mini mags ?

Thank you very much

Elsie,

Thanks for asking about Red producing a mini SSD rear modular. For field work it would be great.

hahaha :)

No worries Mike. And damn... sorry to hear the news about your Dragon upgrade order getting lost in the shuffle. I think there is a spot in the upgrade line in January 2017 we can fit you back in :)

heh heh heh. I kid, I kid.

Hi Kennan, I miss yours and Karen's postings of samples of your work on Reduser. You do great work.

I would also like to take this opportunity to request a second item from RED that I believe would be very useful. That is, if they would offer a wireless signal repeater that we could place midway between our Redmote and the camera. I wonder if that, if low power, could be built and sold without having the approval of the FCC?

Wouldn't it have been wiser to get the new gear first and then sell your old stuff and not put yourself in that situation? Especially at Christmas?
