  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED MINI MAG , MINI MAG SIDE MODULE and MINI MAG STATION now shipping.

All the wireless stuff I seen so far has flaws, So even if you have the possibility to stream it I think it would be still vice to have a card in camera for image drop out etc. And even if 4k can be streamed I doubt the higher frame rates or 6k will stream as easy. However if red do a 4k proxy stream thats another thing. Se that as more use.

But to me a Terradek Bolt and a Atmos samuraj or even better Pix sound device makes that just fine in HD today and frankly I rather have small lowress proxies that I can slush around with on my little mac air then getting r3d's to stream off from camera.

Side note, just used our Bolt down in Johannesburg before christmas. The thing worked perfect on the tech day, but when entering the stadium for the shoot connection was lost no matter how short distance between transmitter and receiver... It turns out that this stadium had a built in sound enhancement system that kind of nuked all other signals... So cable it was..

R3D files though? Low compression ratios and high frame rates? I have no doubt highly compressed 4k can be transmitted effectively...

No. Probably not wirelessly, but are you going to be shooting like that continuously? Just let the clips queue up on your redmag and they'll be uploaded with the available bandwidth. There's also a good likelihood of 10 gigabit ethernet being onboard if this happens.

I scanned this thread but didn't see this brought up anywhere:

Wouldn't it make a lot of sense to have a mini-mag rear module? That way we could keep our current side SSD module and SSDs and move to the new form factor - AND have the advantages of dual SSD modules, greater capacity, Hot swap?, etc. Should be a little cheaper since you don't have the EVF connector and buttons. Or possibly combine it with some of the functionality of the +1 module.

Having to scrap the current side SSD that virtually every current epic owner has seems to go against the obsolescence obsolete idea.

Also, are the buttons on the mini mag side module in exactly the same place? (wondering if the controls in an underwater housing will still hit?

Interesting points about the wireless data transmission,. I'm not sure that would mean no smaller new mags than 512, however. Surely it makes sense to give multiple workflow options with the smaller mags, on top of this new workflow? Going from a smallest of 48gb ssd's to 512 is a fair jump.

Tech improvement is good. Really like it, will order it for sure. Reading this thread still feels some smooting over. There is CFast 2.0 .. and more.. and not agree on common standard will create issues. Tech moves fast, fucking fast.

I think the point to be made is that if you can't afford $2450 per mag, then you'll probably also want to be economizing by buying the used Redmags that people upgrading to mini mags are selling.

Is there a reason that the smaller cheaper chips can't be put into the 1.8" larger card form factor? I would like the 50% off price cut per GB but at the cost of $2,000 in side module and card readers it seems like a money losing venture for me to upgrade.

As to wireless, I would love wireless R3D access through a module. At 200mbps wifi rates that would be about 1:3 transfer speed. If I could download a 30 second take in 90 seconds that would be infinite better than pulling a mag, walking over to my laptop and copy/pasting it off and then returning a mag if I need to verify a setup in a 5k comp. Even for backing up the camera this would be amazing. I would say I only go through a 128GB mag about once every hour or two on set. Imagine if when you pull a mag it's already downloaded most of the data wirelessly. It would also be good for data verification. Some things are impossible to see on a small monitor but would show up instantly on a workstation that's on the same network. And with 802.11AC offering up to 4gbps in the future that would be able to easily keep you backed up live. Even if your camera dropped in a lake while filming you would have all your footage up to that point without even retrieving the redmag.

I think it's fair to assume that the new module will have a minimag slot. Probably best to wait.

The mini mags are about half the size of the 1.8's so how about a double slot mini mag SSD side module that makes a back up at the same time so when you do offload half the clips are done. This would be great with hot swap possibility.

This is one of the best ideas I've heard in a while. Nicely done...

Silly question of the day… does the Mini Mag Side Module come with screws? I'd hate for it to arrive and have no screws to mount it to the body… That would be catastrophic.

Mine did not. Did you not keep your old ones? Easy enough to source. Maybe your bomb squad rep can help

Did you get the tool to mount it (allen key). I wonder since i sold my "old" ssd side module today. Ok so i should keep the screws.

Edit. Sent the screws anyway.

Is there any more fps already on the epic with the new mini ssd? Hope we will se 100 fps in 5k and 125 in 4k.

From red.com
When used with the RED MINI-MAG SIDE SSD MODULE, RED MINI-MAGS utilize a faster read/write speed for capturing higher frame rates and resolutions with less compression.

I read that statement as the faster mini-mag media allowing for lower REDCODE compression when capturing at higher frame rates and larger resolutions. Not adding more frame rates or resolution.

Thats what i thought to until reading the info red.com. Sure it is only lower compression now but im hoping it will translate to a few fps to later. Maby it means "just" lower compression on higher fps. Thats cool to. Guess i still think that pal should have a little love.

Jarred did mention that higher frame-rates are not related to the media - they are limited by the sensor/ASIC combination. Faster media allows for lesser compression and faster offloading...
So the way I read his words:
ASIC + sensor = frame-rates / resolution limitation
ASIC + media = compression ratios (and the offloading of mags)

Ah was hoping it was not a limit from the asic, so we are out of hope in pal land to ever se 100fps 5k. Lower compression is cool to of course.
