Here's a couple of interesting links which underscore exactly why Jim and Jarred's commitment to making cameras in the USA is so significant:

When I read stuff like this, it sure takes away the pain of back-order! Local manufacturing takes time to build and grow...go Team RED...you are doing things the right way and keeping your priorities clear.

Thank you, Meryem. Very eye-opening. The "This American Life" piece was very vividly moving. Wow. Thank you Red for doing your best to not support sweatshop, no, suicideshop work conditions. I have tried hard over the years to not purchase Chinese products. But it is getting to be nearly impossible...

Before anyone judges . . . China is going through what the West went through during our Industrial Revolution. In time the workers will gain basic rights and power and a balance will occur. Radical cultural change and raw, unregulated Capitalism is never pretty - it's not a Apple/China thing.

For me the build local concept is more about keeping IP secure and having the ability to move much, much faster since everything is under one roof. Innovation occurs best when all the players are in the same zip code. RED could not do what they do if they were scattered around the planet . . . that is what Hasselblad is attempting to do . . .

Exactly Meryem can't agree more...Congrats to Red Team...

Just for the record, Josh, I wasn't judging China. American manufacturing is, itself, in a state of disarray. We're no model citizens, hello, we are the primary exporters of toxic derivative products which are collapsing world economies daily! Not flag-waving here, by any means...just admiring RED's model. What they're doing is monumentally difficult.

I'm hoping that our nation can pull itself out of its sinkhole and remember our roots as inventors and innovators (of useful items, rather than toxic derivative stew). Stupidity and greed got us into this mess. Innovation and generosity, two prime movers at RED, will get us out.

My EPIC--and the pride and thought that went into its manufacture--is part of a tale of hope.

America:
You want to solve the Mexican drug war problem - stop taking drugs
You want to defund terrorism - stop using oil and policies that support that use
You want to stop Chinese pollution/exploitation - stop buying their products
You want to fix Health Care - put down that super-sized burger and get off your fat ass
You want main street America back - support it - not WalMart

Look in the mirror - not at others actions

America don't let the soldiers piss on Afghan insurgents and don't let Abu Gharib torture and prisoner abuse ...Defend Human Rights ...Defend Peace...

But can a manufacturer based in California survive?
Willie Sutton robbed banks "because that's where the money is.
California's deficit is Thirteen Billion.
Where will California get its money?

Manufacturing is a lot of different things. What RED is doing is perfectly viable and sustainable. What others are doing, not so much.

Agree:

Capitalism is freedom for every one. In other words it's like having a farm where both the chickens and the foxes are running free, So when applied it might take a while before before it all runs in harmony. But nature it self does it fairly well.

That may not be the best analogy, as what happens after the foxes have eaten all the chickens and then starved to death because there's nothing more to eat :)

But nature it self does it fairly well.
What standard do you use to make such a statement? Tell it to the West African Rhino. However your quite right if you mean that Nature is survival of the fittest, same with Society, no way to get around it. Today, those most fit are those with Government connections. At other times it was those most adept at innovation.
