  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

red lcd vs other monitors

Transvideo makes spectacular monitors. Hands down the most daylight viewable out there. They are Mad expensive, but worth it.

The main reason I didn't buy a Red LCD, is because it only works with Red. I want my monitors to be as flexible as possible.

thank you.
what do you think about the evf?
can i get by with only the 6" transvideo hd monitor or should i have the evf as well? (its going to be the only monitoring and should suffice for critical focus)

Here's the problem with not having the RED LCD or EVF...you can't see the full menu on the HDSDI output. Personally, I find the LCD more useful than the EVF since I tend to shoot things that are in funky angles or I've got to move the camera more than I can move my body (Jib, shooting from the back of a truck, etc.)

TransVideo is the best but it is also very expensive. If your looking for a good monitor at a great price check this one out http://www.siniarchproductions.com/lsdsgn/lsdesign-catalog.htm

I've heard great things about this monitor and am considering one for myself. Much more affordable than the TransVideo. Finner did a video on it on his website http://www.finnerknowsbest.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=24&Itemid=88

The HDMI input to DVI into the LSDesign Carrion monitor will allow you to see all the camera menus just like the RED LCD. I don't know if the TransVideo monitor will allow you to do this. Anyhow, both options will be great.

Yeah, I agree with Macville, while you can try to navigate the menus by the screen on the back of the camera, it's more difficult and you can't always see it well.

For film style shoots, I love the EVF, I much prefer an eyepiece than an LCD and the EVF is really the only LCD Eyepiece that I ever liked. It would be nice if they worked with other cameras as well, but if you're investing in RED, one or the other would probably be a wise choice. I wouldn't want to use the camera without one of them.

I would say the EVF is a must have. The Carrion monitor seems to be good, but I ordered one six weeks ago, and have not heard a damn thing from them, nor have they responded to my emails.

For what it's worth, I have no problem navigating the menus from the back of the camera, in fact even though I have the EVF I still navigate from the LCD display. That may change as I get more used to it though.
