RED KOMODO MONOCHROME TEST

Han,

Yeah me neither. I imagine if you are or were a photographer whom has shoot with Monochrome cameras in the past like those from Leica and others and you wanted to now make the move over to video, this and other Red Monochrome cameras would be how you would do that in the highest possible quality on the market But I'm sure other Cinematographers would be interested in using a Monochrome camera for whenever a project might require it.

Strangely, I own a Leica M11 Monochrom and love it. But video is a different story for me. Won’t do monochrome video.

Yeah, I know that there are certain unique aesthetics characteristics of a Monochrome Sensored camera that can't truly be recreated by just desaturating an image to Black and White. But to a majority of the general public whom would see an image from a monochrome camera compared to an image from a RGB Color Sensor camera, they really probably wouldn't be able to tell the difference. I think you would just have to be really dedicated to the accurate reproduction of True Monochromatic Still and Video Images to spend that much money on a camera ,at least to me , that's in an incredibly niche market.

I used to take the OLPF out of earlier Red cameras.

The bump in resolution was significant...

I think the perceived increase in the resolution from the sensor of a monochrome camera comes mainly from not having to go through a Color Array Filter and not having to go through a Debayer Process. Also you probably will get less noise in your images as well. But again i think if you used a really good Black and White RED CREATIVE Lut or one of PHIL's PhilmColor Black and White Luts or maybe a good DCTL that also did a Good Black and White rendering, to the "Normal" untrained eye I'm guessing they really wouldn't be able to discern a significant difference.

For Example, Here's the Sample Red Image of the Girl and Guy in the Cadilac in Black and White using a John Daro DCTL. For those whom are highly knowledgeable of the aesthetics of a Monochrome image, there will be "telltale" signs from examining the image that it was not captured with a Monochrome camera.

Video Of the above Still

However to the ordinary "Lay Person" if i put the video image above in a Timeline next to an Image captured with a Monochrome camera and played the sequence for them to view without making them aware of what I did, I think I could get away with it.

The limits are higher on the Monochrom… a lot higher. On the Leica M11M I set the max ISO to 100,000 and leave the camera in auto. The idea of doing this on one of my color cameras is crazy. I think for video the usable ISO will be much closer to the color sensor variant.

Yeah I would imagine a Video Monochrome Camera probably having greater Limitations than a Stills Monochrome camera would. Plus Leica has been doing Monochrome cameras for a very long time.
