I have got conflicting information on gyroscope stabilization data. I read that Red Komodo has gyroscope stabilization sensors but they are not activated yet? Can we get confirmation from Red that Komodo does indeed have gyroscope sensors? And if they do have the sensors can we get confirmation that Red Gyroscope Stabilization will be coming to Red Komodo in the near future? Since Komodo is so small and lightweight its more important than ever, especially when shooting hand-held that gyroscope stabilization be implemented. It literally would be a game changer!! I seen fx9 gyro stabilization with catalyst browse and it was amazing. I really hope Red Komodo has this ability and hope its a top priority for the Komodo. Can we please get confirmation on this one way or the other? If there are no plans to implement gyroscope data in future please let us know. Thx

Stabilization using data from the gyro inside the camera is something I've requested for years. If SteadXP can do it in a cheap little box, why not just put it in the camera and have a stabilization slider in the RAW settings in post? But this request has been to deaf ears for the most part. I really don't know why this so low prioritized.

On top of that, having something camera track the recorded clip so that we can export FBX virtual cameras for direct VFX compositing should also be pretty easy if we had that data in-camera. This is also something that would revolutionize the industry, but nope... no one seems to care.

I guarantee that when these features finally get released for cinema cameras like Red, Arri and the top of the line Sony's, the entire film industry will cherish it like it's a revolution that has never been thought about before. Mark my words.

Red Gyroscope

Red Gyroscope

I am new to Red eco system. Coming from Sony Fx9 I recently sold and bought a komodo and A7siii for hybrid. I absolutely love the komodo IQ and post production workflow. Its a whole other level.

I read on this forum that the Komodo has gyro sensors but there not activated. The biggest issue im having is shaky footage bc the camera is so light. I noticed alot of shaky footage online. Unless ur on sticks or on a gimbal its tough to stabilize.

As previous Fx9 user sony had catalyst browse which was pain in the ass but worked amazingly.

If red could implement Red Gyroscope data into its red raw workflow it would be game changing imho.

Meantime will need to use gimbal or stabilizee or sticks.

Having gyroscope data shot in 6k would allow you to stabilize so smooth going down to a 4k timeline.

I know building out the AF algorithm and getting RF mount is a priority.

On a side note, one idea im big supporter of is open source communities.

I wonder how long before a camera company makes an open source platform sort of like an apple app store. Where developers could come in thru 3rd parties and design apps for the cameras to then be sold abd ofc Red would get a percentage or kick back.

I thought Sony was gonna do it on alpha series with the app store but it got shut down quickly

I think if you want to see real innovation you need to have an open source platform where alot of smart ppl can work on different systems, sale them in an app store, and let them develop naturally overtime.

You could have one team working on Face eye AF system and another team doing lidar based AF for cine lenses.

You could have RF lenses and other lense systens reverse engineered so they would work flawlessly.

Have teams work on HDR processing for wdr.

And have team work on gyroscope data. If you want real innovation, an open source type system would be fastest way to go about it imho.

Meantime id still love to get some confirmation on If Gyroscope Stabilization is in Komodos Plans. It might not even have gyro sensors. Who knows. I hope it does though.

Also one last suggestion a roadmap with plans of future upcoming firmware features would be awesome.

Do we know what the status of the gyro stabilization is for Komodo? Does Komodo have a gyroscopic sensor? If so, if this information captured in meta-data? This subject becomes important, as it seems that with the release of Davinci Resolve 17.2, gyro data is going to be supported. This could be a major update for anyone shooting handheld.

So no update on this after some 7 months?

So no one knows anything about this?

I would also like to know this. I've read that resolve can use gyroscope data now in a recent update, maybe it could work with the komodo if it does have gyro data. The Red Komodo page on the Red website does have a section for stabilization in post so it is a selling point and why I want one.

That's still a selling point, with or without gyro data. Global shutter means no jello, which means warp stabilizer and Resolve's stabilizer have a much bigger fighting chance at getting you a really good looking shot without half of the image wobbling away from you.

That’s true, but imagine global shutter combined with gyroscopic data. The results could be absolutely amazing. Komodo was designed as a crash/action cam; Specifically, to be a high quality replacement for GoPros. All such cameras utilize gyroscopic sensors for stabilization. So the question remains:

• Does Komodo have a gyro sensor?

• Is there a plan to actually enable it for stabilization, weather in post or in camera?

Stabilization isn’t just “a selling point” in action cams... it’s one of the MAJOR SELLING POINTS.

Does no one here actually know the answer to these questions? As it stands, Komodo is the only action cam that I’m aware of that has no form of stabilization... NONE! At this price point, even all “non-action cam” competitors have some form of stabilization... All. Sony utilizes Catalyst Browse, while Canon favors in camera electronic stabilization. An action cam without stabilization makes no sense at all... Not if you have any plans to use it for its intended purpose. All action cams have excellent in camera gyroscopic based stabilization... ALL.

FUN FACT: Many people get nauseous watching shaky footage. Which is why ALL action cams have gyroscopic stabilization.

Potentially, with a global shutter the stabilization could be better than this:

Are there any updates to this? I found this project on github called Virtual Gimbal that takes gyro data and can smooth out footage. It's open source so it's possible to modify it to take R3D gyro metadata

https://github.com/yossato/virtualGimbal

the results are pretty impressive and can be used on any camera that uses it's SD card. But that's only for storing gyrodata.
If we have it in camera I think it could be plugged into their once it's converted to JSON. My day job is programming so I think I could be able to do that if we have gyrodata. I'm waiting on my Komodo so I can't confirm and this page doesn't say if the komodo has it or not. https://support.red.com/hc/en-us/articles/360001464648-Gyroscope-and-Accelerometer-Metadata

This feature might even be supported in Davinci Resolve. I recall they added support for gyroscopic data. I’ve been trying to find out if Komodo records gyroscopic data, but no one seems to know. Another use… if the camera has the sensor, and can output it via the app, might be too use it for real-time VFX utilizing Unreal Engine with an Led wall. I’ve worked as a software engineer also… actually have run engineering departments. Would love to build out that functionality, but all I’m hearing is crickets.

Yeah right. I guarantee there’ll be plenty of “real men don’t gyro,” “Kubrick didn’t gyro, so I’m not going to either,” and my favorite, “gyro messes with the natural motion cadence of the caffeinated camera operator….it looks un natural, I tell ya.”

I'm pretty sure arri has some way to do it, but arri has ways to record like every plausible type of metadata, they have their own sonic rangefinder, their own lens metadata collection stuff.

TBH, it would be great if it just recorded a seperate timecoded file, regardless of what the format was, because to me that is the biggest weakness of steadxp, i really would like something that works in the other direction, you feed it timecode and give it someway to trigger start/stop with the camera ideally, and then get per timecode gyro data, it can always be extracted and post processed back into the footage just like the cooke /i data and an external recorder for such.

I could totally understand the arguments like in the quote if it wasn't global shutter and/or was just 4k, but since there is no direct way to scale down to 4k no matter what, ideally you just crop down to like 5/5.5k, unless its really shaky they perhaps you have options to go all the way down to 4k. If it was properly synced with per frame gyro data, I highly doubt any normal human could ever tell the difference. Hyperlapse is flawed cause its just doing image analysis, but with time stamped gyro data, as long as the camera stays within x degress of on axis, it should be basically impossible to discern any differences, especially if you are using FF lenses on an S35 camera where you don't really have to consider edge roll off.

I saw a video with Brandon Li utilizing the Sony A7siii gyro data, and it blew my mind. I assume they can embed the info into a sidecar file, or maybe directly into one of the audio channels?

The Red Raven has gyro and accelerator data. Says in the manual. Not sure if the Raven had it at launch or if it was added after. But it seems like the Komodo won't be getting it? Since it looks like they're moving onto the new the Raptor

If it's anything like the gyro/accel data on the DSMC1 and 2, I wouldn't count on it to be useable for anything functional (like stabilization).

We don’t even know if this camera has a gyroscopic sensor. We know exactly zero about this.

I'd be happy with a horizon check thats similar to how the Alexa Mini displays it. Never really liked how the DSMC1/2 horizon was displayed...

Like Han said above, does the Komodo even have a gyro sensor in it?

Any more updates on this? Saw Blackmagic is rolling out gyro support for the Pocket cameras and Resolve. Would be a fantastic tool to have in the Komodo.
