Couple of things that haven't been discussed so far & I think should...
As stated, Jim & Co have every right to protect the Red company, reputation, brand etc, and it's only polite and good business to respect that.
When he registered & traded using the Red names, he expected a monopoly over the use of that name (unless he was challenged by an existing business who was already trading under a similiar name....dunno, don't care.
However his monopoly over the name/s would only be for a certain class of goods and/or services. I start up the Red Apple Drink Co, good luck if any one in the camera or software manufacturing thinks they can restrict my trade of selling juice. ain't gonna happen. & that ain't no Red rag!

One caveat on the above is if the Red name is deemed 'famous' and someone else's use of the 'Red' name causing a dilution of the Red Camera trademark etc. good luck with that!

Next point is 'passing off' where it might resonably be assumed that your company i.e Red Ninji's is affiliated with the Red camera company.

I was also quite suprised when he gave his approval for his trade mark be branded on so many websites a while back. Guess it seemed like a good thing to do at the time but now it just seems to of been sending mixed messages.

I guess my final point (it's getting late here) which has been said before is, don't be a prick, give Jim & co their company name and such...he and others are working very hard for it! But it also should cut both ways... I know of one company in the film/television industry who have got a potentially conflicting name (with Red) and were around before Red, So I'd say give them their due as well.

Would these get someone in trouble?

.-. . -..

The friendly little company that took the giants down with a rock and sling will eventually grow into the King who sends men off to battle to steal their wives. It's human nature, it's corporate nature, it's inevitable that they will become less and less friendly as they expand because they will have more at stake, more to protect, and will covet more market share.

Will Red be more accessible and open than Sony? Sure, I'm not saying they wont be, but there is no way they can remain the company we knew a year ago. I'm sure they'll try very hard, but things will change as they get bigger, I don't see how it's avoidable.

I'm not saying there is anything wrong with this, I'm just saying that's the way it is.

Well, if you look at it from YOUR POV it makes sense....Would you want someone using your name for gains not had by you?

I guess the whole "fanboy" thing makes this a little complicated as most guys are using "RED" because they like it so much and want to promote the system.

A litte off topic, but this brings up some nostalgic memories: nealy 15 years ago, my brother Daryl worked as a photo camera salesman. We both were heavy into contax equipment and didn't like everything about the contax cameras. One day he came up to me and said - we should make a new kind of (analog) photo camera - swiss built and we'll call it RED. I said who needs a new kind of photo camera and why the hell name it RED? Anyway, we now got our RED camera and life could'nt be better:)

Angenieux recently developed a good quality but lower priced zoom lens, with a PL lens mount, unusable on film cameras, but aimed primarily at (guess!) digital camera users. They called it "Rouge", red in French. Hmmm!

Hi Guys,
There are many ways you can use Red in a company name with
no reference to the precious RED camera company.
A few suggestions:
Ready Steady Films
Red Rocket Pictures
Redhead Pictures.(need to dye your hair here)
Camera Ready Inc
Seeing Red Pictures
Red Robbin Pictures
Redlit Films
The Color Red Movie Company or Color Me Red Films
The Red Army Equipment Company(out of Hong Kong)
The Red Centre (based in Australia)
Fanboy Films
I could go on but you get the picture huh.
Not trying to stir the pot here, protect your name RED guys, but
don't go crazy.
Cheers Mezmo

And we arn't paving new ground here... APPLE ( another common name trademark) is just as vigilant protecting it's mark.

but even Apple seems to allows some use of there Trademarks:

www.macrumors.com belongs to MacRumors.com, LLC
and www.appleinsider.com belongs to AppleInsider, Inc

as far as I know mac as well as apple are trademarks of Apple.
And in the end both sites probably help Apple.

but who knows?

FYI - Red Rocket Pictures already exists and has for more than a decade. I work with them sometimes.

ibloom clearly understood and figured out a nice workaround... good job.

Jim

Any time Jim.

foot steps heard in the distance as Mr. Bloom runs to the trademark office :)

Yes, I made Crimson a trademark and it's been used in commerce for most of this year. Unfortunately Crimson has a large enough userbase now that if you call your website CrimsonModz or whatever, people might think you are trying to associate yourself with the software not Jim's camera. This will be to your benefit or detriment depending on who you ask.

I think after creating RED, it's not a lot to ask for from anyone, it is your right as the business owner.
I hope you get the support from everyone out there.

(But it is tough coming up with a name to associate with RED without using it and with the clever Mr. Bloom using Crimson :)

Shawn, the name I saw that you are using, which I won't divulge here, is pretty badass. Almost as good as Crimson ;)

Otherwise the early bird gets the worm as they say.
Try:
3K, 4K, 5K
Digital Cinema
or RAW

Hi,

There used to be a facilities house in London called Red & another called blue. I don't know if they are still in existance, a quick inquiry at www.companieshouse.co.uk would show the dates they were registered,
