  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red in OZ

excellent - it would be great to know their numbers...

Mike

Hi to the Oz RED users. Just letting you know that I've been following RED since it's inception but didn't take the plunge until reservations opened up again in January - so I've got #1103 which I don't expect to get until Aug/Sept but I keep my fingers crossed that it will be earlier.

Just letting you know who's out there in Oz with a reservation. I'm currently based in Melbourne but am prone to travel!

Cheers

Cam

All,

I've put done a list of topics our local user group may or may not concern it's self about.
I've got these from what I've read on this thread plus a few more.
Please jump in and add, edit however you wish. I've expanded Education as example.

1. Education – who, what, resources, etc.
• Who – producers, camera assistants, DOPs, production & hire companies, professional organisations, Red owners, other private individual & organisations.
• What – basic & advanced user training, data work flow, backup, online storage & file systems
• Resources – Red Inc. & dealer network, professional organizations (e.g. SMPTE), other user (local & o/s)

2. Support infrastructure – technical support; replacement, etc

3. Professional workflow – capture, offline, online, using Redcine, software/hardware workflow products, post houses, screening, etc.

4. Production techniques - etc

5. Commercials - rates, shipping, insurance, hire accessory & support requirements, etc.

6. General – list of owners, etc.

cheers,
Dave

Just thought I'd say g'day too!

I'm an Aussie but I have recently moved to Tokyo to make films. Although I'm based in Japan I have most of my film friends etc still in Australia so there is some chance that my camera will end up being hired down there. On the flip side of that I'm the only person with a Red in Japan so it may well be booked solid here for a long time to come (fingers crossed)!

Anyway, if anyone here is traveling to Japan in the near future don't hesitate to look me up for a beer or two, you never know when you might get to film up here and if you do then you have a local Red camera ready to go!

cheers,

Paul

G'day

Happy to be part of any ANZAC Red initiative. We are NZ's largest (video) rental house and will be taking delivery of an early Red (23). Our main focus will be on 2/3" B4 Cine HD /ENG HD production due to the lack of cine lenses in the short term. We have interest from major NZ post houses in being involved in testing of the camera and workflow. I know of 4 confirmed camera orders in NZ but I expect there are more that haven't gone public yet.

We probably won't be comfortable renting the camera until our 2nd body arrives or we have confirmed cross-hire options.

It will be interesting to see if an Australasian distributor/service agent is appointed for the region

G'day

Happy to be part of any ANZAC Red initiative.

Howdy Rocketeer,

Any NZ'er is welcome as far as I'm concerned. I've worked in NZ a number of times of the past few years and I love the place! Now that I'm back in OZ though, can we swap prime ministers? I'm sure you'd love to see our wonderful "Little Johnie" doing his daily power walk across the Southern Alps.

Now, how could we arrange a well-timed avalanche?

Cheers

Are you counting Peter Jackson in those 4 confirmed orders? If not, you better make it at least 5 ;)

Hi all, OzRED is a great idea. I'm intending to go Canon glass. Was thinking of Nikon but if Birger deliver at NAB then I'm Canonising. Any thoughts? Great to be in touch. I'm #241.

Good luck with the site.
Hope it goes very well.

Dave,

Hello everybody. The subject of Import Duties came up a while ago, but didn't seem to be answered. I rang Customs, and asked whether the Free Trade Agreement helped at all in reducing Import Duty, and was surprised to be told that it doesn't even come into it as duty isn't charged on cameras. Duty is only applied to goods that are already manufactured here (she said), and therefore cameras have no Duty charge. They do, however, have GST. I didn't get around to asking about the various batteries and so on, but I imagine it's the same story. So, GST is painless for those who are registered, and there's no duty. Good news. I'll check again, as this was just one person, and I wouldn't mind it in writing.

Setting some basic parameters.....

Setting some basic parameters.....

Howdy all....
Just been reading through the posts here in the Oz section.
Great idea Mikes to build up a local collective of RED users.
I guess one of my first questions is, does everyone intend to hire out there RED camera, and if so i think we need to start looking at setting some ball park rental rates, depending on what kit we buy from RED....?
I noticed one place in NZ called Rubber Monkey, that already has the camera listed on there site and has a rental rate of $370NZ P/D.......!
That seems awfully cheap to me....? what do you guys think...?
http://www.rubbermonkey.co.nz/rental_catalogue.asp

It would be a great idea as Mikes mentioned to try and get a group of RED owners together once some RED cameras have been delivered.
My suggestion would be to put on a bit of a demo day/night for anyone & everyone to come along & see how this thing works.(DP's,AC's,Prod & Dir & Editors).
I'm sure the ACS here in Sydney would love to do a demo night with the RED camera. They are usually very accommodating
Next thought......
I wonder if RED HQ will be offering authorized service centers around the world eventually....? you know.....someone goes and does a 2 week intensive tech course with the RED boffins, and becomes a qualified RED-TECH here in Oz.....i hope so...!

Sorry guys i know im all over the place, but i'm just throwing it all out there as it comes to mind.....

cheers

Paul,
When you say ACS would love to put on a show, what resources would you hope they’d provide? I think someone also mentioned SMPTE in June. Venue, screen, projector, advertising come to mind.
With regards to cross camera hire/share etc I’ve had little experience here.
But here are a few thoughts.
I like the idea and feel if there was an opportunity within a local RED community to share RED cameras…then knowing I have a backup is important.
If that backup costs or doesn’t is secondary, as long as it’s available!
Also knowing some of my shoots I can plan on using 2 REDs instead of one, is an attractive idea particularly if the only cost was offset by lending out my RED for a week the previous month. Also reduced rates to participants works for me even thou this starts to get a bit ‘funny’.

The key one for me is risk/insurance and key to that is if I had a shoot coming up would I feel like lending it out a couple of days before. Hell I don’t even like lending out my HDV’s to friends who I think won’t treat them as well as myself or it would be a bother getting them repaired. But these things I’m sure have work arounds and would love to hear from people that have made it work.

Cheers,
Dave

Love your blog Rocketeer and loving this whole OZ thread.

We shot our very first feature on Sony HD900 and from the lessons learned in that production we would love to actually "own" the camera & lighting gear for our next production.

RED looks as if it might help us solve that problem.

I am finding that these forums are answering questions as quickly as I can ask them and that is great. What I am really looking forward to is some hands on training, so I am definitely looking forward to some annnouncements on Education ....

One question ... is anyone from this forum going to NAB?

I checked the new blog...very cool.

I'll visit it regularly, because I make frequent Southern Hemisphere trips.

I'll come to Oz and NZ as often as possible...

C-ya at NAB Rocketeer!
