Hello all,

Here is another "Red Country Club" thread:

So who got Red reservations in France?

It would also be interesting if the Red team could provide us with the same reservation world map they showed at the LA screening but displaying the number of reservations on each country.

Red Users Meeting in Paris (January/February) date not fixed yet

Here are some info about the Red meeting I'm organizing in Paris. I will update this message regulary.

- date : not fixed yet (january/february)

- place : not fixed yet (depending on how many people expected)

- people expected :
. Jérémie g_remy33@hotmail.com (Red# 696 and 697)
. Arnaud alias arno aparis@sysmicfilms.com (Red# 722)
. Michael alias mcprod mcprod@free.fr (No Red reservation yet)
. Jean-Charles Wolfarth production@jcwolfarth.com (No Red reservation yet)

- suggestion of subjects :
. everyone's projects, business sectors
. constitution of an eventual Red network :

1. Everyone's expectations
2. Camera sharing (how could it work, planning, financing, other gear)
3. The following of the projects, postproduction
4. Solutions that this network would bring to the problem of distribution/diffusion of HD projects
5. Collaboration with other Red users outside France

If you have other ideas, suggestions, don't hesitate !
Please contact us by email to confirm your interest to the meeting, we need to know how many people will attempt to look for a covenient place.

See you soon,

Jean-Charles & Kristin

Sure, samsara, a lot of crime is needed here to wake everyone up !

Seriously, I still believe it could be interesting for some people who can't afford a whole Red system to share one (4-5 persons would be ideal). It would be better than owning a full HDV kit, no ? It's a pity to let this kind of gear sleeping in its box while it could be used on others' projects, not to mention the fact that it would give to these persons some help from the others, as eveyrone knows how difficult it is to constitute a good motivated crew here in France.

Anyway, if anyone's interested, even outside France... Europe is quite small, no ?

Kristin

Slow typing here sorry

What about a new thread called Red in France n° 256713

You bunch of doublecrossers

Seriously,
Kristin you need to be more precise in what you mean by "sharing" the gear.
If it means I would call you if I needed a second Red for a shoot, instead of calling a rent house I think it sounds good, if it's worth it for you and me.

I could really see a kind of network of people standing for each other, but we must give it a some solid basis.

So wich thread do you prefer guys? :)

Yours emmanuel

OK Emmanuel, let's carry on with this thread ! Yes I was thinking of a network. My opinion : knowing how much rental companies here in France overcharge their prices because they're used to deal with producers dealing with State's money, I seriously doubt that, even if the cost of a Red package is very low compared to other brands, they will adjust their prices.

I was more thinking of indie feature/doc/shortfilm work than commercial work. I'm sure we are several readers here who have several features/shortfilms/docs projects. What if we create for instance an association of several filmmakers and we buy together a good Red package ? We could help each other on everyone's projects, just like they did with the Nouvelle Vague ? They succeeded in making their first films because everyone helped the others on their projects. I think we would have a better chance to succeed in our projects this way instead of trying desperately to do it the official way and being more isolated, now that the gear exists.

It's just an idea, maybe you have other ones... I was just think of applying the Red concept to the artistic path of creating movies. If you buy your own gear it will cost you more, you will certainly not use it everyday and you may encounter difficulty to rent it if you don't have a lot of connection.

What do you think, guys ?

Kristin

Wow, I did not think I would get so many reactions so quick!!

Well, I totally agree about starting a "Red French Connection" (RFC) to team up and share the gear and the clients :o) I mean it'd be great to be able to refer clients we can't take to other true Red spirits!

I also hate to see how some major rental houses in France sometimes outrageoulsy overcharge just because they got some exclusivity on foreign gear.

On my side I will get 2 Reds plus a Zoom Lens.

Let's get more specific as to where you guys are based, if you are setup as a company or as a freelancer.

I work under a small production company in Paris; doing mostly post production work for TV channels and also some corporate films to survive but trying to do short films to spiritually feed our filmmaker desperate souls...

hello, I am about to order a red… couldn't one speak in French here or elsewhere?

Hi Arno
We too are doing corporate films, websites, photos and musique for a living, and we like to shoot short films when we get a chance.
We are planning to get a RedOne, RedZoom, Red300mm, and all Red accessories, and if there is any money left, we'd like to get a real cookin' editing platform (mac based) why not a finishing system, we'll see.
Also we are planning to shoot some documentaries, and specialize in shooting surfing action.

Emmanuel

More people interested in the red than on the "repaire" : here

I work for several directors as production manager (freelancer). I'm preparing 2 features : one will be shot mid-2007 (director Jean-Charles Wolfarth www.jcwolfarth.com ), the other in 2008, with English actors and crew. We will buy a Red and other gear to complete these two. All indies, hey we don't have a choice when you see which kind of movies are financed in France !

I don't know as nobody reacted to my proposition, but if someone is planning to do some work which requires a longer shooting period than a ponctual one (in this case probably renting would be more useful), we're up to discuss and meet. Unless you prefer to take all the financial risks... :)

Contact (in Paris) : production@jcwolfarth.com

Cheers,

Kristin

Hey Kristin:)

On my part, I've been thinking of all what you said in the first Red in France thread and in this one.
My case is clear, living 4 hours TGV 8 hours drive from Paris, would you like to share a Red with me ?
I won't blame you if you don't. But apart from distance, I have to be honest with you and say that the redOne is a piece of equipment i would have a problem sharing. By that I mean not having one all to myself whenever I feel or have to shoot.
I'm sure you know what it's like in Paris, comes May and June, and every body start to shoot like crazies, what happen then if you have to share the Red between 5,6,7 shorts over a couple weeks. Shedulding one project is hard enough not to have to share a camera between to many projects.
Of course we could save some money by buying one Red between us all, but at one point some of us will either start loosing serious money (by not beeing able to shoot comercial projects) or loosing their mental sanity (by not beeing allowed to shoot their next blockbuster feature).
Still I see what you mean, and I don't intend to discourage anybody from following this course, but I owe you an explication why I didn't exactly jump on your wagon in the first place.

Yours Emmanuel

Hi Emmanuel (and others !)

Thanks for your thoughts ! Of course I understand your position and you're right about the planning thing. Our case : we will probably use the Red one only for about 2 months per year (maximum). And I think it's a pity to let this camera in its box for the rest of the year. We firstly thought of renting the package the other months, but it requires a lot of worries as this gear is probably more fragile than a 35mm camera and it will be hard to touch the right persons who might be interested. It's like a car, it may be more clever to share it with careful persons. Another problem : the difficulty of making a professional network in France, as the profession isn't as structured as in the USA for instance (it's hard to touch a specific profession).

Indie movies which require a long period of shooting (more than 10 days) are very difficult to organize : technicians who aren't usually paid aren't very reliable (of course it's understable, they need money to live like everyone). And now that Red exists, it allows indies to have the same quality as pros. But indies will still face the problem of the crew for their artistic projects (features, shortfilms and docs). That's why we thought maybe sharing some gear could be useful.

Look at the prices at ww.indierentals.com . For one month the body will be at $5000. The professional rental companies in France will probably be even more expensive.

Not having the camera with us isn't a problem for us, even if you were in Berlin or Roma. I think it's a matter of organization, if we see in the future that we all have big schedule, there's always the possibility to give the camera to someone specific at a still interesting price. And in 1 year or 2, probably there will be a Red 2, or other brands...

I don't know, maybe it would be interesting to discuss together of our respective projects. Please contact directly Jean-Charles at production@jcwolfarth.com , he's more technical than me !

Cheers,

Kristin

Arkham, Brussels it's 1h30 whith tgv! I'm going to jump next month probably...so, I would like to meet you!

Juan Carlos, could you please contact us (Jean-Charles, same first name as you !) at production@jcwolfarth.com ? We're both reading these posts. I'm sure we could meet in Paris and talk about setting up a small association/ French connection of directors/dops/etc in France. Moreover it would be nice to hear about all the projects everyone is planning and involved in. Everyone is welcomed (even French people who have already a reservation! :) )

Cheers,

Kristin (& Jean-Charles :) )
