A bad day for Cisco - who purchased PURE DIGITAL- makers of the Flip Video Camera for ... $590 million ... WTF were they drinking ....?

We purchased a small armada of Flip Ultra HD cameras at our studio for newbies to learn basic camera concepts on. I wouldn't want to do that with an iPod, which likely is still shooting 640x480 ~20 FPS.

The way they positioned the camera on the ipod is the stupidest thing i've ever seen. It's at the bottom right corner, so you can't hold the thing right handed, meaning you have to hold it and cover the SCREEN. Uh... what?

Yeah, I shot some unexpected doco bits on a Flip Mino HD when my Red was next door. Those I showed it to guessed EX-3 or HD-CAM. One guessed DSLR. Pretty impressive!

Apple has turned into microsoft. ie allow smaller competitors to bait the Marketplace with aspiring new products afterwhich said bigger company swoops in for the kill. The Flip Video Camera is probably going to be Apple's lunch for the next couple of quarters.

Now if Apple could pull off a 4K iphone/iTouch, we are all set

That's the only place they could put it with current board stack. They'll have it worked out in the spring.

Flip HD is a good product. Sorta makes you wonder why people pay so much for a Canon or Nikon branded camera. The guts of those things are quite competitively priced.

really. no one is gonna mention how the Flip doesn't shoot Raw or how the DR really sux and how it does'nt have a proper "film look"? oh and the horrible CMOS skew/jello!!!

I have a Flip. It sucks. But it's also a really cool toy and my kids love taking movies with it t. I think my 6 year old has made a dozen videos of herself going down slides, swinging, etc.. The jello... oh, the horror. :)

Actually, I'm surprised the thing hasn't been destroyed with all it's been through. If it does break, I'd buy another, maybe... The kids really like it. I actually find my iPhone to be more useful and convenient for video. If I want to reach for something else, I'd pass the Flip and go for one of my other cameras. ...I have the Flip HD version.

Sounds like a hoot man, you should post some of it! I don't have kids yet but have 5 nieces and I alway let 'em use my still cameras at partys and such, cause most adults are so paranoid about kids touching cameras and what not, but I think it's a great developmental tool.
You sound like a cool dad :)

I bought my daughter a Fisher Price digital camera for her 4th birthday because she was definitely interested, and my nephew already had one and he's 9 months older. Which is also the main reason why my daughter wanted one. Anyway, once I finally got her to understand a few things, like thinking about the picture before pushing the button because the thing only holds so many pics, she started to do really well. It's amazing to look through all her pictures, really showed us the world through her eyes and what is important to her.

Both kids have outgrown that Fisher Price camera, didn't take long and my son who's now 4 is actually the "post expert" between the two of them. He's more proficient in iPhoto than many adults I know and he can't even read yet, other than a handful of spot words. Lately, they have been abusing the Flip HD and my Canon Powershot G2 that I retired a year or so back. Actually they have slowed down now that school has started... Which is a good thing. Becuase my next mission is to get them their own computer so they can quit beating up my 15" MBP.

Bought a Flip Mino HD for my nephew who is 14 and really getting into doing video. He loves it. Having shot with some nice HD cameras over the years, the video quality wasn't my cup of tea, but it wasn't me who needed to be impressed and I couldn't afford to buy him a RED so...

You don't have to cover the screen - you could just hold it landscape by the top and bottom (which would be the sides when it's normally oriented)
